touchscreen scroll support?

i am using a Qanta-based touchscreen

in Internet Explorer, you could put your finger anywhere on a webpage and drag, and the scrolling will follow your finger
in Opera, dragging your finger is the same as holding down the left mouse button and dragging

are there any plans to improve touchscreen support?

I posted a thread about this a week or so ago here.

opera:config#UserPrefs|ScrollIsPan is a very, very poor substitute for something almost all other browsers excel at. You even have to disable it via a non-default button in order to select text.

they'll propbably put it in settings as a regular option instead of the preferences because most ppl who use opera dont even know about it but since ipad alot of future features will target touchscreens

two questions:
@dertbox: how do you select text in other browsers then using the touchscreen?
generally, why doesn't the touchscreen driver create mouse wheel events when panning if the app does not support touch-events? I mean that seems like kind of the obvious solution that would allow about every "legacy" app to have out-of-the-box panning support through the touch screen.
All my posts only represent my own opinions.

If you touch on some text and move your finger either left or right, it highlights it, but touching on text and moving your finger up or down scrolls the page.

As for windows built in touch screen controls, there are options for flicks, but they're limited to page up/down and back and forward. They aren't for scrolling. The only program I have that doesn't support touch control as it should is Opera, all of Windows 7 supports it natively, even Notepad.

I was hoping they'd update this with the next version, but the alpha of 10.60 has just come out with no glance at it.

There should be implement something like this: "Improving the Single-Finger Panning Experience" Link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd562167(v=VS.85).aspx

Thats look like C-Code maybe it can be integrate easilye in the sourcecode wink

Edit: The Link above is only an extension for panning: Here it the correct link for the implementation: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd562171(v=VS.85).aspx

i really cant believe the devs at opera haven;t added this yet, i've been harping on about windows touch screen support since 10.2

still no native touch scrolling/text selection automation

still no floating touch input panel

come on, i've been stuck with firefox on my tablet for too long!

The small keyboard icon doesn't come up when you want to type. Instead you have to find in the corner and drag it out. Used Opera for many years and have it on all the machines.

But Opera is not tablet friendly. Firefox much better option with touch addons and working input panel

Ah right. I hadn't noticed that as I've got a convertible with a keyboard, the onscreen keyboard is butt hurt to use for anything more than a couple of lines.

Like this, I suppose.

Opera seem to have a really fast development process as the version numbers steadily climb, but i don't understand why there is still no scrolling or integration of floating keyboard integration for touchscreens.

I have a convertible tablet/netbook ( Asus t91mt), the only time I use the floating input panel is when I'm browsing the web, typing in search items, forms etc.

if I want to type reams, I'll use the hardware keyboard, but when I'm browsing with opera I currently have to open the on-screen keyboard from the taskbar link, drag the keyboard to the right place, then put the cursor where I want to type.
the on-screen keyboard is so much more convenient if it opens/appears above or below where you want to type just by tapping in the textbox ( as in IE and firefox)

it's the same issue with scrolling, IE and firefox both automatically select text if moving your finger or pen from side to side on a web page and scroll when moving up or down.

pinch to zoom works well in opera, but it isn't really needed that often, whereas scrolling and quick access to on screen keyboard are really important in a browser on a tablet device

Odd, Windows XP and up have a popup button on the side of the screen to display the onscreen keyboard that appears automatically if you're using the screen, it's different from the OSK.exe app.

Problem: The windows tablet input panel pop-up button (pops up whenever you focus an input field) is no longer supported in Opera. At least it does not work for me. I can`t say for sure, but I vaguely remember it working in some of the opera 10 beta snapshots. I have made a button for this.

Solution: a) Support for windows tablet input pop-up. b)I`d rather have a browser specific keyboard. Direct pop-up when needed. Somewhat resize-able. One that uses current opera skin. Enable in preferences.

Problem: You must either mark text, or scroll with touchscreen. You cannot opt to do both.

Solution: I don`t know. But there is a default button for scroll as pan toggle in opera. One can drag it to one of the toolbars and switch it on/off as needed. (I don`t need to mark text as often as I need to scroll).
