Opera mini - some bugs/questions...

Hi,

I'm using Opera Mini on my SonyEricsson W995. At times, Opera Mini will NOT fit page to the screen, even though mobile view is ON. Sometimes it will just show the page all zoomed out and ask me to zoom in a section. This happens, for example, when viewing messages in Gmail in simple mobile mode, ie no styling, so this does NOT depend on the message. It is random. At times, it will show scroll bars left/right, which it also should not do.

Also - at times it will open completely the WRONG link - and not the one clicked!

Another problem I have is that I want to either remove or change the thumbs that are generated and shown on Opera Start screen. Or is there a way to NOT show that screen upon start-up?

Apart from this - what an amazing browser! Without it, it would be impossible to surf the net on my phone using the built-in browser.

Thank you!

I haven't the slighest blue why some pages not being displayed as fit to screen, I find it annoying too but, can't do much. Its probably some code that disables page formating by the Opera Mini servers.
About changing the thumbs on the start screen, they're actually speed dials. Just click on the thumbnail or icon to visit that website.
To change it select the location and press 1 and you'll get the option to edit or clear the speed dial for that position.
Hope this helps smile

Hi selurus,

Many thanks for your reply. Ok - glad to know it's not only me having problems with pages not fitting the screen. However, it is strange that, as I described above, this happens randomly withing Gmail, so it must be some Opera bug.

Regarding the speed dial - I want to keep the speed dial, but do not want to keep the default thumbnail that Opera generates. I want to either bypass speed dial or choose my own thumbnail. Possible? Sometimes I do not want everybody on the bus knowing what my favourite websites are.

Many thanks!

The bugs is only with random pages, most of the blogspot blogs are affected and some blogs on My Opera too. I don't check mails on Opera Mini so can't say if certains mails are affected too.

About the thumbnails, unfortunately the answer is No. Opera Mini picks the thumbnail by itself, generally its the top left part of the page but it can be unpredictable.

Usually the page does not fit into mobile view if there are long lines of texts that does not break (aka no line break). For example OM does not seem to break some URL addresses (if I recall right). Same thing with some pictures that are not scaled to fit the width.

What comes to wrong pages opened from the links, I'm surprised to hear this problem still exists. I still think you get this especially when you try to open link on cached page. In other words you have done this:

1) On page X you opened link Y.
2) Hit back (went back to cached page)
3) On page X hit the link for Z but end up to somewhere else.

But even with some blogs on Opera mini the page does not fit to width like my blog does. Its happening with most of the new blogs.
For example this one here:

I think its a problem with the CSS or something that defines page width.

@ Selurus - I think we are both right. On MyOpera default theme there's wide background image used on menu bar, which proabably causes tis issue. Peeps having new blogs use the default theme wink Obviously it has been defined on OM server to show background images as true as possible. If the background image is small and repeated, it does not cause any issues. For example the theme for Choose Opera blog was changed recently, and now it fits to width just alright, which was not the case previously.

Oh yes. You're absolutely right Serola. Its the CSS issue on the default theme. I've tried it on my blog.
It wouldn't be possible to get all noobs to switch themes.
How can we get Opera to fix this issue by fixing the default theme?

If you wish to get the default theme changed, then the right forum would be My Opera: Feedback, questions and discussions. But if you wish to get it solved for all pages using wide background images, then I guess you could fill in Opera Mini bug report wizard. Nevertheless, I would first wait a day or two in case someone from Opera Mini staff wish to comment on this discussion. Maybe they already know it but found it a less urgent issue.

EDIT: Correction, it's not the background image but some other CSS technique used that causes this. No idea yet what it is confused

I guess its probably the page width is set to a fixed value or some other such trivial oversight.

I've created a new thread on the My Opera forums.
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=581982&t=1274694775&page=1#comment5608312

Hopefully it'll catch the attention of the right people and they'll fix this bug soon.

But that's strange - it can NOT be CSS or images that are causing this, as I mentioned above, this happens randomly when viewing plain text messages in Gmail. Some messages will show just fine, others have to be zoomed in and do not fit the screen. Once again, these are PLAIN text messages, so I think Opera Mini must be a bit temepramental with this issue.

On an unrelated matter - the forum does not send me updates when new replies are posted, even though I'm subscribed to this thread. No, emails are NOT going into my spam folder. Anyone else?

Thanks!

@ Madonnaragu - Oh, you are right, now I understand what you mean. Now that I think this more carefully, I recall seeing this to happen for example on blog articles after some comments posted. Something goes wrong and Opera Mini no longer recognize the spaces between words on some particular comments. Instead you get either vertical scroll bar (on desktop Opera) or page just does not fit into mobile view (Opera Mini).
