Solution for OM5 Sluggishness on S60
OM5 is extremely sluggish on S60, especially when typing on S60 3rd Edition. Accidentally, I discovered a solution. Unfortunately, it is not something everyone would like.Disable Opera Link, and delete all bookmarks.
Today was the day I upgraded to OM5 ( and it's still not a bit as good as 4.2, usability wise ). Before adding Link and my bookmarks, I tried typing an address - it worked almost effortlessly, just like with the native Mobile version. In fact, having the pre-installed speed dials did not make any difference. I synced the bookmarks, and here the app is as sluggish as ever.
Link has been not working on Opera Mobile ( so far, I'm yet to see anyone who could sync on Mobile 10 ), and it seems the number of bookmarks ( I believe I have some 50-100 saved ) are causing OM5 to be sluggish.
I'm not a dev, so I've got no idea how this is caused. But this definitely is about the coding of OM5 since 4.2 could cope with any number of bookmarks.

And quite obviously, needing more time to load the synchronized bookmarks seem to be the key reason. Speed Dials make almost no difference.

I've been able to sync on Opera Mobile 10 fine.
Only problem I've had with link so far is I synced With an old installation of Opera Mini 5 that I wasn't using till a few days back and that caused some bookmarks to be doubled and I tried to delete them but I guess I may have accidently deleted others too.
My Opera Link account is so messed up right now, working but messed up.

@selurus You've been very lucky. A majority of us, were unable to sync Opera Mobile, due to the Parsing Failed issue.
On Mini 5, I saved five Speed Dials, and they have caused it to be a bit slower. Plus, when you add the Speed Dials Opera pushes into it on every connection despite deletion, it adds around eight addresses to preload in the bar.

What if you synchronize and then switch off Opera Link? I just wonder if it's just Opera Link that causes the sluggishness or is it also the number of bookmarks and speed dials saved.
I recall some earlier posts where it was said that it's just the number of speed dials. Therefore I wonder if you try to have number of bookmarks, keep Opera Link on, but have no speed dials at all. What would happen then?

No, it's not the synchronization process, but the number of stored bookmarks. Link on/off state does not make a difference. Deleting Speed Dials when you have bookmarks almost make no difference.

OK, then you may wish to try as I once suggested on Opera Mini Fans blog, and use some other bookmark service, like delicious. If one or two bookmarks does not cause problems, then all you need is bookmarklet to store your favorites on some bookmark service site.
Yes, I know, I know, locally saved bookmarks are better. One option is to try saving some of your portals locally into saved pages.

Serola, thanks. Yes it's a fix. But it shouldn't be the solution, right ? Well, then we can drop Bookmarks section altogether and reduce midlet size by a good amount of kbs. Nevertheless, I am glad that they are working on this.

Couldn't agree more and I would call it a temporary "workaround"

I use OM5 on an unsupported, lower end BREW phone, so I'm pretty sure no one else has worse lags with the interface than I do.
2 things - 1) after updating to 5.0.19693, the animations are now "fast" enough to be tolerable; 2) I figured out that the more bookmarks needed to be scrolled on one screen, the more sluggish OM5 becomes.
So I have been doing this for a while now - I categorize all my bookmarks into different folders, and make sure the root of the tree no longer contains any bookmarks. I also try to keep less than 10 bookmarks in each folder.
The result is amazing. After the change, OM5 responses faster AND crashes less. My theory is that OM needs to cache the entire screen for dynamic scrolling. Unlike webpages where a majority of the computations took place on the server, bookmarks use the phone's processor and available memory to do all the work. Displaying more bookmarks on the same screen causes the requirement of memory and processing power to rise exponentially (used loosely here), making it more likely for the phone's OS to go into panic when memory runs out.

tl;dr - if you have too many bookmarks, put them in folders, and keep the items count per screen low in all cases.

Pardon the off-topic questions. Do you mean a BREW phone that also runs Java applications? If not, how did you install, and where did you get, a BREW version of Opera Mini?
nttrllg-2o Sorry, I don't get your point. Even if we put them to seperate folders, they will still appear on the address bar, right ?

@scottb
The internal directory structure looks like BREW, but yes it's running OM5 jar. So ... I'm thinking it may be a JVM on top of BREW?
Someone already spent time "understanding" the phone and wrote a program to perform the installation, so the execution is trivial. From the little that I can gather, the program creates a new directory, copies the jad, jar, manifest, policy etc into the directory, calculates the size and the offset of the directory, then put the new entry into the content and execution db. Everything is done on a PC so files will need to be uploaded to the phone afterwards.
@miyuru
I read carefully about what you said again and realized we were actually complaining about different things. Have you tried setting the fullscreen edit in the preference? That should bypass OM's drop down list when typing. It's not a real solution, but it beats not having access to bookmarks.

may i suggest?try editing the bookmark storage/set it to your mem card.so that the bookmarks arent directly saved on om5s midlet memory my om4.2 and om5 are both sync with my om10 and has no lagging issues.
You seem to have misunderstood. Bookmark storage cannot be manually selected. Only the Saved Pages storage can be.

ah i see then creating folders should atleast improve speed or simply avoid too much multi taskn btw i am using a moddified version of 5 and 4.2 maybe thats also another reason why i dont encounter much problems
