How far up the hierarchy do you go

Before you realise (or are told) that it is all nonsense?
Every Christmas a gaggle of bearded, black-clad, wild-eyed priests cram into a tiny grotto in Israel somewhere, and emerge triumphant with a miraculously-lit candle.
Who has the Zippo? Do they all have Zippos just in case? Does any one of them believe it is a miracle? Would any one of them be admitted if he were so stupid or uninformed that he believed it to be miraculous?
How far up the Mormon edifice must you ascend before you a. are told, or b. admit that you know, that there is no gold-leaved book and that there never was.
At what point in your climb up the Catholic slippery slope do you stop believing any of it? At what point do you realise that no-one else believes? At what point do you dare admit this to your superiors? At what point do you make it easier on those beneath you by admitting it to them? Obviously some priests still believe. Do any bishops? Can you be a bishop and still believe? Are there seminars on teaching the power-hungry strivers how to appear to believe? Do any cardinals believe in anything but their ambition? Did any Pope, anywhere, in any era, ever believe?
Where, in the zero-sum accountancy of Scientology, do you switch from being the milked to being a milker? Are Tom Cruise, who is stupid, and John Travolta, who isn't, on the same level? Why are they there? Neither needs the money. Is it even remotely possible that they do, in fact, believe it?
The horror, the horror.

Needing the money and wanting the money are different things.

Of course, in the cases above, there is always the 'stupid' option.

Someone should go up the political hierarchy with a strong suppository.

There will always be a hierarchy no matter the background, political system or whatever. History well proves that.

Ah ah Catholics won with five entire lines dedicated to our magnificent hierarchical management system. Nine questions out of ten possible, almost perfect. C'mon you could give us a ten...

Can someone from the ex-Colonies across the pond kindly translate what farflung is about? The non-de-plume seems appropriate?

As a fan of 60's and 70's era music, you should know, Mr. Howie:

Or in his case, this might be more appropriate:
"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." - J.R.R. Tolkien

"Americans should not go abroad to slay dragons they do not understand in the name of spreading democracy." -President John Quincy Adams

If you realize before you start climbing the slippery slope of hierarchy you can save yourself a whole load of wasted time.
