Opera is changing english to chinese when copying and pasting using Mac OSX

I am using OSX 10.6.3. I copied from Firefox web page and pasted into GMAIL open in Opera and characters were changed from english to chinese.
(Forgive me if I am a little off on which language, it looks like chinese to me. )

What it looks like is broken encoding. Have you got a link to the page were you copied text from?

We have only ever heard of problems with copying from Microsoft Word.
