email client freezing opera
I'm hoping someone can help. I've been using Opera for my imap email for years and have a lot of emails kicking around now. Opera is not supported by my work (surprise surprise), but I have it set up in my user area (Win XP pro). For historical reasons it's shared between two folders 'Opera' and 'Opera 7'. I upgraded to the latest version of Opera and since then have found this problem. When I click to display a view with a large number of emails in it (received and sent are the ones causing the problem) Opera freezes and the message comes up in the title bar 'Opera (not responding)' sometimes it does come through and display the messages, but most often I have to close down and start it up again. I presume it's something to do with processing a large number of messages, but as I say it's a new problem and it's a killer. To do anything that might involve looking in the received view I must really use another email client (Thunderbird does not have this problem).
Two questions - what can I do about this to make it work quickly and efficiently as it used to do? Before searching became feasible in other clients it was possible in Opera. It ain't so now for me. And if I were to start again with a clean installation of Opera in my user area how could I make sure that I get all my emails, book marks etc etc in the new installation?
Thanks.
Also, what sorting are you using in All Messages/Received? The default (which is no sorting)? Note that if you sort by subject, loading the list will be a lot slower.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'shared' in this case.
Also, if you have a really old computer, Opera 10.5x won't be as fast as Opera 10.10.
Also, are you trying to access All Messages/Received before the database is fully loaded, or after?
Also, have you tried the latest version at http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/ ?
(at your own risk, backing up your mail folder before trying it of course)
There are several thousand emails in the received view and the type of sorting doesn't make any difference, it's when you go to open it as well as when you go to sort it.
The shared between folders thing is that I have a folder called Opera and another folder called Opera 7 (which tells you something about when I created it) and my current installation uses both in a way which I find mysterious. I would do a clean reinstallation, but I'm afraid of losing years worth of emails etc..
The computer is not old.
I don't know whether the database is loaded, but the email client opens when I start Opera and assuming it loads in the background while I'm doing other things then the problem occurs when it's fully loaded yes.
I have upgraded to the latest full releases (and I'm afraid I suspect this is a 10.5x problem), but I don't plan to try the prerelease versions.
Thanks for your time.

There was a bug related to this. But, I think it's fixed in the latest 10.54 snapshots.

O.K. I'm not sure what exactly Opera's using in each folder. But, that doesn't necessarily sound like something that would cause a freeze.
But, if you want to investigate, help -> About Opera will show you the paths Opera's using.
It'd also be good to know if you have Opera setup to using a single profile for the whole computer or a separate profile for each user.
For example, which of the following exist and are actually being used by Opera:
"C:\Document and Settings\user\Application Data\Opera\Opera"
"C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera\Opera"
"C:\Document and Settings\user\Application Data\Opera\Opera7"
"C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera\Opera7"
"C:\Program Files\Opera"
"C:\Program Files\Opera7"
"C:\Program Files\Opera\Profile"
"C:\Program Files\Opera7\Profile"
*If* everything's correct, the mail folder location in Help -> About Opera should be "C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera\Opera\mail".
("C:\users\appdata\roaming|local" instead for > winXP)
Again, this might not be the problem. But, it's something you should think about fixing at some point.
The computer is not old.
I have an ancient computer with 68000 messages in received and have no problem. So, it probably isn't a performance issue unless your mail database and harddrive are so fragmented that it causes a problem with Opera.

O.K. You might have to wait till the next final then to see if things are fixed or not. If they're not, you might (after more investigation) have to install a new Opera fresh and import your messages into it to get things to work. Too soon to tell if you'll need to do that or not though.
