Clean Installation - a how to request and a suggestion
First a suggestion - I can't understand why the only options are clean installation or upgrade. I would like to see an intermediate option of a clean installation which keeps accumulated data (especially emails, contacts, bookmarks, passwords and doubtless others). I don't imagine it can be that hard for Opera to back up the relevant files, uninstall the existing version and install the new one with the saved files. After all that seems to be the process we are asked to go through when doing a clean install ourselves. This leads to my how to request - is there a simple straightforward step by step guide anywhere to doing a clean install which will end with all my data, emails, passwords etc being in place and working in the new version? Things have got slow and clunky and I'd like to try a clean install, but need the reassurance that I'll be able to use everything once done.
Thanks.
Change the install path to a directory with a different name. I presume you're using Windows. The path is usually the C drive and \Program Files\Opera\. Change it to something like \Program Files\Opera10.5\ or \Opera copy\. From you new installation, look under File > Import and Export (I'm using 10.10; with 10.5x click on the O-menu or press Alt to get the menu options) to import your bookmarks, contacts, and mail.
Another option is to rename your preference and cookie files. You haven't lost them by renaming, and it will allow you to use your present installation with a new default file. Go to Help > About Opera (opera:about) which will show you the path to your preferences. Then close Opera and rename cookies4.dat and operaprefs.ini to something like dcookies4.dat and qoperaprefs.ini. If you need to go back to them, they will be easy to find. New files will be created when you start Opera again.

Opera Settings Import & Export Tool
http://www.pallax.com/~discostu/opera/osie/
Really great, light tool. It enables getting a fresh/clean install completely the way I had it, custom buttons, skins,
bookmarks, everything. You can individually select from a long list the specific things to both export, and import.
I just click through with the "choices" or things it found, and it works.
Easy backup tool too.
It is not completely "automatic".
Open it, click export, it will show the Opera profile(s)
it found, across the top section of the next window.
Click on the profile you want to save/export.
Name it, done.
So it is really easy.
I honestly have used this too many times to count, and never had an issue.
Hope your mileage doesn't vary...
I have no connection with this software or the folks who make it, BTW.
I just really like it.
