Could thumbnail tabs be an effective security measure against phishing?
I read this article by azaaza (Mozilla's "Creative Lead") today and immediately looked at my own interface to visualise how it would work. As I use Opera's thumbnail tabs, it took me a few seconds to realise how dangerous it could potentially be - without thumbnails.I suppose since this is apparently a new type of attack, the security implications of being able to see pages you have open have probably not been previously considered, however this could be another argument for live thumbnails (as opposed to the "generated on refresh" ones we currently have). With a little javascript trickery, one could fairly easily change the entire page while leaving the thumbnail unaltered, or vice-versa.
How about inspecting the address bar and/or using bookmarks?
IMHO there never will be an effective security measure replacing common sense.

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.
It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle: when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.

Banking sites are also more susceptible for another reason than mentioned there: for something like Gmail I've got my password saved with Wand, so no auto-login would be a major giveaway. For banks I prefer not to save my password, so they would be more susceptible. However, I act what I'd call reasonably intelligent and login, do my thing, and logout again. Thus I'd think I'd be fairly safe from this kind of thing.
