gz / gzip?

I've compressed some files on a trial web site to see what performance benefits compression adds. I've used 7-zip to compress the html, js, and css, and added some .htaccess wizardry to switch out the requested file with the gzipped version, depending on whether or not the browser advocates it can accept the gzip encoding.

This works just fine for most browsers except for some browsers:
- MSIE refuses to accept the compressed files due to mime-type incompatibility;
- Chrome tells me to gzip stuff but fails to advertise it can accept the gzip encoding;
- Opera Mobile for Windows Mobile somehow fails to execute some css or some javascript, but manages to execute other parts.

Obviously I'm here to discuss the latter. Please have a look and share your thoughts?

It should look like this:

However, I can see html parts that should have been hidden by css and javascript. It doesn't seem to matter whether Opera Turbo is activated or not. All that seems to matter, is that my files are gzipped.

I'm using the latest version of Opera Mobile, for Windows Mobile 6.

I noticed that the problem shows only when viewing the page using mobile view. If mobile view is turned off, the elements that needed to be hidden stay hidden, much like in the desktop version of Opera.

Might not be a gzip-problem at all.

I have yet to create a separate mobile stylesheet. Am I correct in assuming that the mobile view is supposed to follow css rules for showing and hiding elements? It folows css rules for colours too, but enforces its own rules for block formatting (which I can understand).
