Issue with transferring locally saved emails to gmail via IMAP
I have just recently configured Opera's email client to access my google mail account (gmail account) via IMAP.Before I used gmail, I used pop3 for all my email addresses and saved the emails locally in the Opera email client.
But now I am using gmail to manage all my email addresses, so I wanted to upload all my locally saved emails to the google server via IMAP.
I have an IMAP folder for every email address configured in my gmail account, and uploading all these old emails works fine.
BUT there is this issue:
When I log into my gmail account via google.com in the web browser and then switch to one of the folders for my email addresses, all the emails that I have uploaded are not sorted correctly. They are sorted by the time I uploaded them, and not by the time I originally received them.
This makes the whole thing kinda useless.
(I can access these same emails via the Opera email client just fine, and the correct date of reception is displayed.)
I have no idea if this is an Opera issue at all, or if this is gmail server's fault...
Does anybode know how to solve this?
(I hope I made everything clear... Im not a native english speaker, so please excuse any weird language
)If Gmail's webmail interface sorts messages by incoming order as opposed to by date, then I don't think there's anything you can do about it because the messages you uploaded are considered new arrivals. I looked in Gmail's webmail interface (including the Gmail Labs extensions) and cannot find any way to sort by date instead of received order.
It doesn't appear to be an Opera problem from your description.

Weird thing is, when I open the email details in the gmail web interface, the complete mail header is displayed correctly, including the original date.
Still, all the mails are sorted by the time I uploaded them...
I also posted this in the gmail forums, maybe someone there can help

That's Opera's *default* sorting method too, only Opera shows oldest-arrived messages at the top and new ones at the bottom. Only when you choose to sort a message lists by date do the messages actually sort by date (updates to new threads in threading mode aside). I suspect that Gmail's webmail interface works like Opera's default sorting, only in reverse. That would explain whey the date headers being correct doesn't help anything.
You could try the same type of thing in another mail client and see if the uploaded message is out of place. That would confirm that it's just Gmail's sorting (or lack of).
I have found another thread in the google forums from someone using "IMAP Size" to upload mails, who has the same problem...
Apparently, uploading mails with Thunderbird solves this and E-Mails will displayed correctly in Google's webmail interface.
Ill try this for a few emails.
Even if this would work, it would take quite an effort to import all my local emails into thunderbird and then upload them.
(I have many thousands of old emails going a few years back. Call me crazy, but sometimes I actually still need those!

If so, we just have to figure out what Thunderbird does and file an Opera bug report.
That reminds me though. When copying a message from one IMAP account to another in Opera, some things (flags etc.) get lost on the copied message. Perhaps that's the case (where something is lost) when copying from a pop account to an IMAP account to upload it too.

Yes. I just tested it with both Thunderbird and Opera. The message (date: 2005) uploaded by Opera is at the top of the list in the label at mail.google.com while the message uploaded by Thunderbird is way at the bottom like it's supposed to be.
I filed this as bug DSK-300056.
