As far as major brands go the field is pretty level, they all produce good products.
Comparing specific printers and cost vs features would probably be more helpful.

I was unpleasantly surprised by HP.
My Epson printer from... a while ago is still working fine, at any rate.

If you're not going to move it won't be an issue. That said, my wife bought that printer years ago, so even if she'd known about the issue she wouldn't have known she was going to be moving to Europe.

Here are some tips:-
1.Laser printers are less expensive per page (always) especially just black/white lasers as they are great for heavy printing.
2.Off Brand Printer Cartridges. Not all of them are good. Some stores sell not-so-great quality off-brand or after market products but if the seller is reputable and has a guarantee then why not try it? Don't forget contrary to what printer manufacturers it is very very hard for a cartidge to damage a printer and using replacement generic cartridges and aftermarket products will not void your printer warranty (by law).
3. Laser Printer Cartridges. Most of the time, if the model is popular enough, you can find good remanufactured cartridges. If you do this, buy remanufactured cartridges that have a new drum, as this will make a big difference. For less popular printer brands and models you may not be able to find cheaper cartridges so check before you buy.
4. For inkjet printers, most HP, All Lexmark, Xerox and some Canon do not have compatible new generic brands but do have cheaper--but not by much--remanufactured cartridges. Most Epson, Brother, Some Canon, Oki and Xerox have good compatible affordable cartridges. You can forget Dell. Dell uses old technology (licensed from Lexmark) and inferior printers with expensive supplies that you can buy only from Dell.com directly. But if you already have one remember some cheaper remanufactured cartridges do exist for Dell printers.

I didn't even know that Dell made printers, but I'd never get a Lexmark (licensed) product!

Canon PIXMA MP620. We got one recently and love it. It's just what we need: a wireless-capable printer capable of printing photos, copying, scanning and documents. It's also capable of connecting via USB in case you don't want to go through connecting it to your wireless network. It's inexpensive as well.
Be aware that you need to manually install the print head before you can actually print from the MP620, though.

i bought a HP Officejet 470 portable printer and have had no problems with it. The HP came with a software driver disk and there was a wallet sized card that has all the compatible ink cartridges listed, which is handy when shopping for cartridges. The HP drivers update automatically with Ubuntu updates.
Before this I tried a cannon MP 190 printer/scanner which was and is a nightmare, I had to search the internet for Linux drivers and when I upgraded Ubuntu the cannon printer drivers stopped working, leaving only the scan option. With the last upgrade to 10.04 only the cannon scanner worked. When both the print and scan functions worked it was necessary to shut down and restart the printer to switch from print to scan.
HP puts much effort in their printer products and on the printer boxes is something labeled universal compatibility. I have not seen this universal compatibility label on other printer boxes. It seems like most printers are labeled for only the Windows OS. Now I can print and scan simultaneously. The HP is used for printing and the cannon "printer" is my scanner.

I have a Kodak ESP 7 - an all-in-one with Ethernet, wireless and USB interfaces, various card slots and drivers even for older MacOS versions. Got separate feeds for regular paper and photos, it can print pictures directly from digital cameras or memory cards etc., print quality is great and ink doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Equal opportunity blasphemist and insultant.
