What GFX card can I upgrade to?

EDIT: Sorry. I posted this in the totally wrong forum. faint I blame my school finals.

I want my new GFX card for:

Playing recent games in decent settings with of course, no lag. (Medium, High, etc.) (Modern Warfare 2, A.V.A, SC2, etc.)

Here are my system specs:

Brand: HP
Model: p6257c
Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 620 @ 2.60GHz
RAM: 8.00GB
System-type: 64-Bit
Graphics: Integrated nVidia 9100
Free PCI slots: 4 (3 x16) (Based on HP's website) (I forgot how many were open the last time I had opened to clean the dust.)
Bought in: November 2009

Based on what I've researched, I'll need a minimum of 300w for recommended system power for the card (I'm not sure though). Based on that, the best card I can buy is the GeForce GT 240. I hear you can upgrade your output wattage by buying a better power supply but I have no idea how to install that.

If not achievable, I'll go ahead and buy a PS3. p

That's roughly the same performance as a 9600GT, isn't it? Should be decent enough (and a LOT better than a 9100), but nothing stellar either these days. Note that I've got a 7600GT and a 9600GT and I see no need for anything better, but then again, I mostly play games on the Wii when I do. The 7600GT didn't perform too well with Empire: Total War whereas the 9600GT did. Anyhow, you didn't mention what kind of PSU you've got? I can't help but notice that for instance this 9800GT isn't too expensive either.

My friend has the 8800 and it runs MW2 and Combat Arms pretty well with the latter on high setting. I'll ask about his MW2 settings. I have no idea what PSU I have and how to check it, I'll Google it once I get home. Thanks for the recommendation. smile

It depends a bit on the specifics (GS, GTX, or Ultra) and the like, but an 8800 should definitely outperform a 9600GT (and conversely a GT240). A 9800GT is very similar to an 8800GTX, so if you're going for nVidia I'd personally get something like that rather than a GT240 (although it is cheaper of course). When my wife built her computer last year we decided to stick a Radeon HD 4850 in there, which is still the direction I'd be looking in right now.

In the end you'll pretty much get a decent card regardless of what you'll decide though, a GT240 being decent slightly under $100 and 9800GT or HD 4850 or some such decent slightly over $100.

I've got a 300W PSU. Also, my monitor resolution is 1920 x 1080. Would that change the card I would buy? Now that you have my PSU and monitor resolution information, what card would you recommended now? Should I buy a better PSU?

EDIT: The nVidia 9600GT looks pretty good and fits with my 300W (The 59 volt version). How's that?

Full HD eh? I think I'd go for something with a tad more juice than a 9600 GT or a GT 240 in that case, like the Radeon HD 4850 I already mentioned, or perhaps something like a GTX 250 or a 9800 GT. You might also be interested in this article.

Regarding the PSU though, most more powerful cards will require a PSU of 450 Watt or more. It's a bit of a tough call what the best price/quality improvement would be.

Edit: that said, a 9600 GT certainly isn't bad. In 1680 x 1050 the mobile version runs Empire: Total War with everything on high without any issues. If you don't want to upgrade your PSU a 9600 GT or a GT 240 is probably your best option, as you already said in the OP.

Well, looks like the 9600GT is my best option here, thanks Frenzie and mubaidr. smile It seems as though the 9600GT is sold out on Newegg and nVidia's website doesn't list a product buy link. When they do come in stock, I'll check the price as well as the price on a 450W+ PSU and compare that to a PS3. smile
