Diaspora - what Unite could have been with more Opera love

The Diaspora project has many same goals as Unite - keeping YOU in charge of your own data, and create social layer on top of it. It will most likely become the next big thing, and got $187,921 from fans as kickstarter money, instead of the $10,000 they asked for.

In essence, you will host your own data, running a server, and you can then share and make people interact with that data. Be it photos, files, "tweets" etc.. sounds familiar? There is nothing stopping Opera Unite from doing the same - except lack of love from Opera. Posts in this section of the forum is far between, and the Unite blog last had a post back in february.

It's a bit sad, really.

Why would Diaspora become the next big thing and not Unite? Just because someone in a blog said so? LOL.

Opera Unite is already doing the same thing.

It's a bit sad, really.

No, what's sad is that some random guy in a forum reads a random blog and forms a crappy opinion based on ignorance.

All Diaspora does is to validate Opera's strategy with Unite. That's a good thing, and not sad at all. It shows that Opera is way ahead of everyone else -- again!

Just for the fun of it, I posted there video on my OperaUnite Site and posted the link to it ,which people are now watching lol

The video my be viewed here....

Really funny video of kids trying to reinvent OperaUnite

Maybe a bit more exact would be to say they are reinventing Retroshare, as it's open source whereas Opera isn't. Actually I just learned of this as well: http://www.indiegogo.com/The-Appleseed-Project
I hope that money won't be spent on blow and champagne like happens with Wikipedia donations bigsmile
Wonder how long it will take them to produce a smoothly working app. The development of Retroshare, Remobo, etc. has been quite slow.

Edit: more of the same:

Where can I download Opera Unite source, Mr. Fail?

Btw. here are some more projects discovered:
http://code.google.com/p/kopal/
http://www.get6d.com/
http://socknet.net/w/The_Socknet
http://crabgrass.riseup.net/

And let's give a link to Remobo, which I mentioned before:

here you will find applications that you can install or view source by downloading them manually, then changing the .ua extension to .zip. Browse the site and you will find instructions and application which helps you build applications. This part is open source, platform is being developed by Opera's stuff only if that is why you say it is not open. Also the links you gave; all those apps are great but difference with opera is that you don't need the same program on the other side, because you can access it with any browser and every computer has one!

Yes, there is quite an obvious difference between 3rd party plugins being open vs. the whole software. I don't understand the hostility and eagerness to shout "FAIL" like there's some sort of pissing contest going on.
I am totally aware of Unite's advantage when it comes to the amount of hassle setting things up. The only other similar project would be HP's Veiled, but it hasn't materialized yet.
Most of the projects in the links I posted are completely new to me and I haven't read about them all very thoroughly. They have diverse approaches and some of them you set up to a web host or host yourself, so your friends don't need to install anything.

i suggest you don't pay much attention to the fail shouters...
back to topic:

the option to use your pc as a server has been there since forever... but with unite, things became so much easier... here is an example page i made... it will only last till concert is over, i use it to promote events, so people know which songs to expect so they can prepare themselfs... i simply did a html mask and embedded the player.. i have never seen a program that would make this so easy, having a dynamic content with 3 clicks. and about open source; i think it's better to have one solid source of releases and ability to make applications then an open source project with tons of editions.

This is a great analysis of different projects:
http://groups.fsf.org/wiki/Group:GNU_Social/Project_Comparison

Even our darling gets a mention:
Opera Unite
Code maturity: Production
Features: Photos, wall, music and filesharing. Capability for groups or global news pages is quite limited

Opera1: 11.51 on Win7 64, Phenom II X6 1090
Opera2: 11.51 on WinXP 32, P4 2.4

I guess this off topic but give a listen to a band from Sweden. Well, two bands. Since the Opera account Unite tab is not displaying any servers (I submitted a bug (US-2037)) here are direct links:
I am not a 'Metal Head' per say but I was impressed by the Astral Doors and Dream Evil is not bad...cheers
Thanks in Advance...
