Opera Mini 4.2 cannot connect to internet on Blackberry with no default browser or BIS/BES

My BB Tour 9630 is unlocked and I have a prepaid China Mobile GSM SIM card (M-Zone) with a simple cellphone data plan but no BIS or BES service. Therefore I have no service book for BB Browser. I installed Opera Mini 4.2. It takes 10 minutes to initialize/install and then fails to access the internet.

All other applications work properly including BB Apps, GMail, GMaps.

Any suggestions on how to get Opera Mini working?
