Blackberry Opera Mini 5 ruined my day

I was browsing around using my favorite browser today, Opera Mini 4.1.
I see at the top of my screen "Upgrade to Opera Mini 5?". Sure I thought, maybe it's even better now.
Download. Install. "Do you wish to save data from previous version? YES."
Opens up. Big clunky interface (no quick popup menus like normal blackberry apps, big clunky thing pops down onto screen instead). Browser runs about half the speed of the previous version, and that's being generous. I think whatever, maybe the new features will grow on me and the slowness and clunkiness will not be a big deal.

Then I notice.... ALL of my bookmarks are gone. GONE. I've been out of work for some time now, and I had countless job leads bookmarked (I don't have an internet connection other than my phone, can't afford at the moment). I made at least 10 new bookmarks just yesterday.
At NO POINT during the upgrade path was I made to believe my bookmarks would be lost. I wouldn't have upgraded. (I used to use Bolt browser, and I upgraded that several times and it always kept my bookmarks, so there is absolutely no excuse).

Now I'm stuck with a bloated, horrendously slow browser with none of my bookmarks. You know what? I'm using the Blackberry browser now. It's terrible, and yet I choose it over the new Opera Mini. That should tell you something.

Opera mini 5 don't work well with saved cookies from v4 so delete and reinstall the application.

My afternoon has been ruined... I just upgraded after thinking to myself that it was highly unlikely that a new version would be worse... I was wrong. All my bookmarks are gone, the interface is bloated, it seems slower and it keeps randomly exiting. I can live with all that, the worst part is that the trackpad no longer tabs through links (even in mobile view), instead I have to painstakingly maneuver the slow, shifty mouse cursor to links. Way to go Opera Mini!!!

BTW, my phone is a Blackberry Curve 8310.

Unfortunately, Opera decided to instead create a new menu dedicated to bookmarks for Opera Mini, unless you had the bookmarks synched up to Opera on PC, you won't be getting them back.

As for the slowness, yes, it's slow, as far as I know the blackberry release was only tested by the majority of users who have blackberries and not opera themselves. I think they were working on the touch-screen phones more instead (See Blackberry Storm).

So really, unless you can put up with it you'll just have to wait till they either release an update (5.1?) to fix most problems, get another browser or use the in-built one or maybe gather a lot of people and request a native version for blackberry, I mean, why not? Nokia has it, Android has it, Windows Mobile has it, iPhone / iPod Touch now has it, why not us? p

Opera Mini 5 is a native BlackBerry application. The java version of OM 5 won't install on a (my) BlackBerry.

Yet another issue, it makes youtube stop working for all browsers. I was wondering why it didn't work anymore in default browser (clicking a video did nothing), and after a quick search, it was suggested it could be opera mini 5. I deleted opera mini, and right away youtube starts working again.

Was this release seriously tested???

I have to agree that Opera Mini 5 is terrible and considerably worse than previous versions. Aside from being slower, it's unstable and crashes frequently (forcing me to take out my BlackBerry battery each time).

instead of replacing, why not try to download a version 4 from mini.opera.com and then go to other downloads ?

Has anybody actually uninstalled 5 and reinstalled 4.2 on a Blackberry? How did you do it? I've not been able to figure out an install from the website - keeps bringing up 5 which I agree is unacceptable. I am using a Curve 8330.

TIA

I'd also like to know how to reinstall OM 4 on my BlackBerry and would appreciate any insight into doing so. I keep getting OM 5 as my only option.

It's astounding that this product would ever be considered release quality. Opera Mini 5 for Windows Mobile is in a far more usable state and that's still labeled beta. Does Opera realize how many Blackberry users won't even give Opera Mini 6 a chance even if it fixes the issues after this kind of experience?

I managed to download/downgrade) to Opera 4 a couple of weeks ago after being very disappointed with the speed of OM5 on my blackberry (and the clunky immovable cursor and the crashing). However I couldn't navigate with OM4 on my Blackberry Bold 9700. Perhaps there were some issues with the trackpad not being recognized by the older browser. So I had to upgrade to 5 again.

Right now I'm using the awfull blackberry browser and OM5 depending on the website. Opera can open the more complicated pages better then the standard browser but it's just so slow. I hope Blackberry OS6 and the new standard browser will be released soon.

Does anyone know if Opera is looking into this at all? Mini 5 is a disaster for the BlackBerry -- surely they have noticed this?

Works fine here. Sounds like your phone is broken!

You must either have a trackball device or never click on links.

He doesn't have BlackBerry, from what I know.

We are aware of issues, yes.

There are problems but at this date I can't even remember to compare to 4.2.
The files uploading is much more stable and once I became familiar with the version and reconfigured for my Curve 8330 there was less of a problem loading pages.
Upon boot up if interupted too soon the software hangs with the cursor stuck in the uppoer left corner. A shortcut to exit to restart would be nice rather than having to pull the battery.
The cursor movement at times can be annoyingly touchy, refusing to settle on the chosen target.
I did lose my bookmarks upon install and can't for the life of me figure out how to sinc with my desktop.
All in all I find thus version as somewhat of an improvement and nothing I can complain about at the price.

@ManneS

Thanks for acknowledging the concerns.

With regards to the reported problems (cursor/crashing/speed etc.), will there be a OM 5.1 version coming out as well for Blackberry users ?

I downloaded the new Opera Mini 5.1 and installed it on my BB 9700 Bold. When the browser opens up, it shows 8 speed dial boxes in which 4 are already predefined web pages...I think those are...my opera, weather channel, mobile apps and NY times. There are also 4 empty boxes where I can customize my choice of websites.

My question is:
Can I customize all 8 speed dial options? If so, how do I do it?

This has been asked and answered many times. Highlight the speed dial and press 1, or long press the track ball, to edit the speed dial. Please use the search.

Opera mini 5.1 is out, and Blackberry Bold (at least the 9650 Bold which I have) still exhibits the same problems of unusably oversensitive optical trackpad and occasional freezing that requires a hard reboot of the phone. I hope Opera fixes this soon, release 5.2 to come soon maybe?? Until then, my Blackberry has no browser worth using.
