Why has validation stopped working on my machine?

When I attempt to validate a page, it fails with..

Line 1, Column 1: end of document in prolog

This error may appear when the validator receives an empty document.

Why would this have suddenly started to happen? It worked fine up until recently...

TIA

Same here. It worked fine, and then suddenly I start getting errors:

Unable to Determine Parse Mode!
...
No Character encoding declared at document level
...
Validation Output: 1 Error
- Line 1, Column 1: end of document in prolog

Validating local files (from C: for example), generated files from local server (localhost) and online files all give the same errors.

Confirmed on OS X 10.6.3 and Opera 10.53 build 8343. Validation simply no longer works.

It looks like a problem with the W3C validator, it was working fine a couple of days ago and no changes here - Windows XP SP3 O10.53. It is not unknown for there to be problems at that site.

Now it works again. I am so used to it working every time I use it, so it never occurred to me that the fault might lie with the validator itself.

Mystery solved, it seems.

Maybe not so much. I'm still getting the "Unable to Determine Parse Mode!" error on all sites I try to validate in Opera -- then, on a hunch, I tried validating in Firefox and the pages validated. (My argument is not whether they validated, but that they were able to be validated at all.) This happened on sites that were coded in HTML 4.01 and XHTML.

I hope this gets resolved.

Strange ... I opened the about:config, didn't change anything, and suddenly I can validate pages again. Not sure whether the about:config had anything to do with it.
