It's going to be a tough world cup. I'm hoping South Africa will at least make it to the second round. And the winners I think will be Brazil.

hi Marike79
Long time no see.

Brazil is a good bet.
Even one or two European teams could win.
How about Spain or Holland?

... I also think Brazil will win. up

Much as I sympathise with them I don't think they should be awarded a place; first refusal maybe, like for Denmark when they won the European Cup (up Danish Dynamite!).

Ty, string, for the article, which concluded

... The
Republic originally asked for the play-off to be replayed but that request was turned down by Fifa. The man at the centre of the storm, former Arsenal striker Henry, released a statement two days after the infamous match in which he said a replay would have been "the fairest solution".

I have not really followed this issue, but seems to me

1/ All teams agreed to the rules, including "Referees decision is final". Referees are human.

2/ So ironic, Gaelic Football, where handling is allowed and encouraged, is the majority sport in Ireland, yet when we play English Football, its the opposition who handles, illegally!.

3/ I don't get the impression that Henry was seriously trying to "get away with it", I believe he expected to be penalized, but exploiting a refs mistake is a time honoured part of the game. Do we want a game ruled by video replay, like some American "sports"? Terrible idea.

4/ I agree with making the appeal as a matter of honour, but absent evidence of corruption, we should not expect reinstatement this year (maybe changes in replay rules next time). Costa Rica, maybe others also have a gripe.

5/ We are not a "charity case". If offered a spot, I hope we (Costa Rica too) decline it on the grounds honour was satisfied. The qualified teams played by the same rules, after all.

6/ Lucky it was a friendly country. Were this a certain Oppressor, any discussion of "sport" would evaporate. Imagine, "England wins over Ireland by a handball". Blood in the streets?

7/ I don't believe corruption is seriously alleged. We appoint these men to keep the game moving and make difficult, split second decisions based on humanly limited data. This referee did his job.

8/ Lay off Henry, he has been punished plenty. When he got home to Barcelona after the incident, he had hell to pay with the Catalans and the Spanish media. I know our New York friends will see the light and welcome him with the respect due the great athlete he is.

Italy i dont think so,
Portugal maybe quarter final,
Bafana Bafana will advance from group stage, but
One of 6 African teams will reach final.

How is the mood "on the ground" in SA right now?
I bet "everybody" is quite excited.

England think they can win, but I'm afraid they will not...

I don't think England can do it, Argentina is also very good. The thing with Brazil is, this is not their best team yet and the competition is really strong. I do hope they win though it will be their sixth world cup win.

The atmosphere here is electric, we are all so exited. I have flags on my car, inside my house, and outside. Just wish i had tickets sad it was hard getting the cheaper ones and the others are to expensive.

The amazing thing is how the people are coming together, black and white.

hi p
I'm great!

So sad to hear you couldn't get tickets . I saw a report on TV that they still haven't sold half of the tickets.

I don't understand why the organizers didn't lower the cost so that more people could afford to go. That way the stadiums wouldn't be half-empty, and the atmosphere would be more exciting with more people on the sidelines confused

anyway, I hope your country does a great job with the cup and that everyone has a fun time. Whether watching on-line, radio, television, or live in the stadium

lol good I'm happy you are doing well.

they had many cheap tickets, just it got sold out before I could get some. most of the games are 97% sold out. If you get a chance have a look at the fifa.com site, you can see what is still available.

BTW I missed the opening concert, I've heard from friends that there was a very passionate speech given by some person. I'd really like to watch it, or even read the transcript if available. Has anyone here watched it or got a link for that video?

I'm sure you'll find something on youtube. The speech (I think) is from Nelson Mandela. He was going to appear at the opening but his great grand child died in a car accident the night before.
