volume slider that passes its value to flash vids et al

With more and more multimedia websites coming up having flash videos or ads with sound browsers should have a general volume slider that passes on its value to an embedded video or whatever on page load. Since Youtube etc can't stop messing with theirs and nobody thinks of people who have master volume cranked up and let all software mix in software.

(Plus, a visual indicator like perhaps a slim circle around the icon in the tab showing which tab generates the sound right now would be good, too, recently out of nowhere a site kept blaring out of my speakers after being silent for hours and I had to hunt thru 30 tabs to figure which one it was..)

The problem with that is that, IINM, when a browser loads a plugin it simply creates a "programming hole" for the plugin to manage as it seems fit: graphics, audio, the rendering zone, everything; that means that the browser can not directly interact with the plugin to "give it orders"; and also it means that the plugin has to implement a volume getter/setter interface to the browser for such a thing to work, otherwise you are sending volume instructions to nowhere.

Plus, HTML5 is on its way, and it will provide far better options on this respect.

Opera can adapt to the world, but that should not be at the cost of making any of them both stupider

Vista (and presumably 7) lets you adjust the volume on a per-application basis, a rather handy feature. Just open the mixer and adjust Opera's volume there. I don't know if your proposed solution would be technically possible (see RyanChappelle's explanation for the reason).
