Download tab placement is annoying...

The download tab should always be on the right, when it moves around it is annoying to locate, harder to keep an eye on the time left, wastes time when I close the tab above it and then have to click on a website tab while my downloads keep going, etc etc.

Please have an option to always have the download tab locked right(or left) and perhaps have the tab change colour when all downloads are done. It would be cool if it changed to light blue when there is 30 seconds left and then fade to dark blue the closer it gets to 0.

So move it there... tabs can be re-ordered by drag & drop...

One way to always keep the download tab on the left - is to use the Download Panel instead.

Personally, I have always turned off the Download Tab (Use the View menu to disable it). And then I rely on the Panel Bar on the left hand side. On here the Downloads button will always show the "total time left" for the ongoing downloads. So works well as a notification that they are still in progress, as well as always being where you want to locate it.

The problem with just moving the tab is that you have to move the tab every time you start Opera and start to download a file.

The problem with the panel bar is that I'm using a small screen and it takes up too much space.

The download tab works great to keep an eye on downloads, it just needs an option to always have it left most tab, so we can keep an eye on it easier

I keep the download tab pinned to the far left, and never close it. It's always in the same place when I want it. Works for me.

If you don't like the panels, as K0asati suggests - leave it on the left and never close it. This is how I handle my email.

(Also, there are small images you can use on the panels. Therefore keeping the real-estate low.)

Suggestion really doesn't work on a computer with multiple users. If I can pin the tab I should be able to tell it to always keep the download tab to the right.

Take this to the wish list forum if these suggestions don't help. If leaving the tab on the left doesn't work in your multi-user environment, don't you think they will also just unpin the tab? Surely once you put that download tab over on the left, there would be no reason for moving it unless someone was closing all of the tabs.

BTW - when I mentioned the Panel bar - did you try it with just the buttons on view? And then toggle the downloads window on and off as you need to see it?

I think their main problem with the Panel, other than size... is that unlike the Tab/Transfers, you have to expand the panel to see the progress, but it's in the title of the tab so you don't really need to go to the tab itself. (although you can hover over the Transfer Panel button to get remaining time, it's not "live").

You can see the progress of downloads on the actual BUTTON on the panel bar. You don't have to have the panel itself open.

The button title is updated with Time Remaining while there is a download in progress.

Yeah, but you have to hover over it like I said... it might be different in the Mac version, but for Windows (XP) & Linux (Fedora) you have to either hover over it, or expand it to see the progress, whereas the Tab is automatically updated.

I've tested with Transfer Window open, and closed, with Transfer Panel expanded/collapsed, in Standard Skin, and other Skins... you always have to hover over it to get remaining time.

Personally I don't really care, I'm rarely in a hurry to download anything, and usually after a few seconds, the estimated time is accurate enough to just mentally mark the completion time, but the OP seems to want a "live" update that the transfer window gives. (and apparently has the pop-up messages disabled)

@Vectronic - What skin are you using? My buttons will display the Transfer Remaining time without any need to hover the mouse over them. This is the same on my XP and Vista PCs.

I have just swapped back to the default skin to test. And sure enough, the word "Downloads" gets changed to the countdown timer of minutes and seconds remaining of the download.

Okay - just worked out what you are doing different to me.
* Go to the CUSTOMISE dialog (Right click the Panel Bar)
* Swap to the Toolbars page
* Now change the Style to "images and text below".
(Note - for anyone else who is reading this... with the above, make sure the highlight is around the panel toolbar when doing these changes. If it isn't already highlighted, click on it before changing the style)

This will then have a slightly wider set of buttons with titles on view. And now you will see that the word "downloads" changes to the "Time Remaining" clock.

Okay, but not a great solution when using a smaller type monitor or netbook.

Especially not if you use Web Panels, where the name is usually more than one word, on mine it takes up about 200px (of 1280x1024), which is why I don't have it set to that.
