So it begins....

As should be common knowledge by now, Facebook is a very handy social-networking site.
Up until this point, there has been a single FB. Not anymore. ( rolleyes )
http://www.millatfacebook.com/

Apparently the gov't of Pakistan takes issue with Facebook as it is, so they paid a couple of people to create Millatfacebook which is apparently a predominantly Muslim FB in which apparently other religious people are welcome.

On this new religious FB, yes.
Apparently Muslims didn't like the "Draw a picture of Muhammad day" and have been leaving FB in droves and calling for their own FB.
Apparently this Millatfacebook is the FB they have been desiring.

We live in Belgium and we've got American webhosting. Although going for the best price/quality rather than the best religion seems somewhat opposite the intended goal of the site. Religious people are plenty hypocritical, however, so that could easily be part of Poe's Law.

Of course, but at least I'll most likely admit it rather than trying to defend it with some interpretation of the Qur'an. Then again, you don't need to interpret much to defend certain things with that piece of writing.

I actually think not: I just came from there, and there were a whopping six members on-line! Blogs and discussion boards may host bloviation –as is their wont– but such will soon become filler for Google's cache…

@Frenzie: The key to understanding Muslim social morality lies (pun intended, since you already know about taqiyya) in the division of the world into Dar al-Islam and Dar al-Harb — which loosely translates to "sphere of peace" and "sphere of war".
But this thread is probably not the place for discussing such. (Perhaps at MFB? smile)

Facebook is popular, but it seems they've got a serious problem with privacy issues. I'm guessing here that the new Muslim version is going to be much the same way, unless they give the users better privacy controls. Happy fishbowl.

Question: If somebody DOES come up with a Christian version to counteract the Muslim version, can anybody think of a reason to go there? How about an atheist version? Oh, boy, think of the nightmares if every separate denomination comes up with their own versions!

The already did , except I it doesn't seem to just be a reacrion to the Muslim sute (which I didn't get to see; they were having a server upgrade.)

On the "face" of it doesn't seems like they'd be that much of reason for their to be Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Methodist, Catholic, etc social networking sites. You can just form a group on Facebook, but maybe a reason to have social networking site for your religion, cause or whatever could the known privacy issues with Facebook.

I hope facebook pursues any and all legal action that it can against this site. If Muslims want to make a social networking site, they should feel more than welcome, but to steal intellectual property and make an exact duplicate site because you don't like the content of the original is inexcusable.

By the way, the creators will be making money off of it almost certainly, off of someone else's ideas and designs. I wonder if religion was really the main factor here....

Geeeez, all the hoopla about a few Muslims having their own FaceBook site. So what.

Who gives a rats ass?

Next you'll be saying they're planning the 'End of Days' through it!

Hey, if FaceBook the real deal has got a problem with it, then there's the courts to settle the issue. All they'll do is change the name, pay a fine, & then continue on as they are.

I say ignore them if you don't like 'em.

Destroy them---each & every last one of them---if you find them encroaching upon your Freedoms & Liberties in your own back yard.

You are free to hate them all you want, but until they turn on you, I say defend their Right to Free Speech! Defend it with all you have to bear!

Defend their right to Free Speech, as if it were your own----because someday, & that day is most surely coming, someday it just might be your Free Speech & Liberty that's in the line of fire!!!

As I have said before social networking sites are curiously antisocial; they don't talk with other social networks. D&D is better, if not perfect in this regard. Anything on D&D is public, but you have to be a My Opera member to post.

Since you don't get your data out of Facebook, the best you can hope for is to get it deleted eventually, Facebook and similar sites have a network effect of the closed kind. This greatly benefit the biggest network, i.e. Facebook, and penalises smaller ones, like this Millatfacebook. Marketing their attempt as "Muslim Facebook", including look and feel, will give them some free press, but the challenge for any new entrant is huge.

Opening the social networks will be difficult too. Google, hardly a minnow, haven't gotten too far with their Buzz (while Orkut was just as closed as Facebook is).

(I initially thought that was what "So it begins...." referred to, when it was clear the topic was about Facebook.)

Considering they just forced it down people's throats with hideous default settings, I wouldn't be surprised if most people disabled it ASAP when they noticed it, just like me. If they had had a banner on Gmail saying "ooh new, shiny, Google Buzz, try it now" imho they might've had more success. Not saying they would've managed to gain anything on Twitter in any way, but the sudden automated sharing with any sod in your address book (which due to the way Google's Contacts work is just about anyone you ever sent an email to) was a major mishap.

Very unlikely to happen due to the network effect. The greatest incentive for joining a social site is that you want to keep in touch with others on the site, which means that given two sites that are otherwise equal, the bigger one wins. Facebook today is Biggest, and is in the process of sucking out members from smaller competitors of similar type. A Baptist network could work with hardcore Baptists, but for people merely with Baptist sympathies would veer towards the bigger sites, unless the Baptist site has some attractive content the more mainstream site doesn't have.

Thats not true, & that's not a joke.
Those sentiments would surely be echoed by Drs. Ron & Rand Paul, not just because it's falsely labeled as "fear mongering" by you, but because it is the truth, a truth that you fail to or just blindly don't want to accept, but a truth that as American Patriots they are quite passionate about.

Sonny boy, if you honestly think Liberty & Freedom are not in peril, you are sadly mistaken.

Thank God fools like yourself don't yet have a way to promote sweeping change by lowering the value & meanings of those principals. I say YET, because as time goes on, unless there is an event to unite America so it defends it's Freedom & Liberty, they will be washed away by or plundered by those that despise America & what She stands for--both externally & internally. Freedom is not free, & Liberty is not a right vacant of the need of being defended.

Funny you mention that. My roommates from my last two years of school encouraged me to open Jamesbook.com, which requested social security numbers, credit card numbers, etc., all for nefarious purposes.

Uh, disregard what I just said. Jamesbook.com is the #1 way to stay in touch with your friends. More than 100 million people use it. Join now!

Oh so now you have decided to start declaring truths have you? Perhaps in your ATPC thread, you can honestly answer a half dozen questions I have posted for you that you have given cop-outs, evasions, or just ignored?
Patriotism is a dangerous thing. I have thanked all my local veterans today for their services over the years. I've shaken hands with them.

Safe? Safe can be measured by a fraction of an inch!

Ask any Marine who's helmet took a hit by an incoming round.

Don't ask me, because I won't tell you.

Why? Because you don't deserve to know. That's why.

The only true safety lies in strenuous & continued vigilance!

Keep a close eye on your friends, & a closer eye on your enemies.

No long list of complaints here about the post 9/11 security measures. The alternative would have been worse. I felt safer knowing me & my family were being protected then, than worried to tears knowing that those measures would temporarily infringe upon my freedoms. Just as long as those that would want to take my Freedoms away permanently were held at length! It's having the freedom to allow it, & then the freedom to rescind it that's really the powerful aspect of 'real' freedom. In it's day drastic measures were necessary to protect Americans from murderous Islamic filth, not that some of those protections aren't necessary today. They were meant to be temporary, but from time to time---if there ever comes another need---they might need resuscitating. For that I would give my full consent depending upon the conditions of the time. It's painfully obvious you will never understand that basic concept. It's something that can't be taught, but is very easy to learn.

Overall, I still feel the same damn way about that idiot son of a lying bastard father, as I told you before more than once.

Oh, and while we are at it, just in case you asked me on another thread, & I neglected to answer you, I do support water boarding, will always support water boarding, & think those that think it's too cruel to make those that would gladly end our way of life subject to it are simply dead wrong. I wish they would have had family & friends in the towers on that fateful 9/11 morning. Maybe then, if asked about using water boarding, they wouldn't deny those entrusted with protecting them, from using this perfectly legitimate method of getting information. Especially if they knew that it could possibly have saved their loved one's lives. On that we will never know though, will we? For my personal grief & anguish I wish water boarding was used on friends of those murderers, & those murderous Islamic filth were stopped! Those that I loved would still be here to share in this beautiful world with me. May they rest. Hopefully all available methods will be used to stop the next attack (especially water boarding), to save the loved one's of those opposed to their use---& may they be made acutely aware that they were used. Maybe then they would sing a different tune. We might never know, will we.

Again, I'm not surprised by this answer.
You have no understanding whatsoever of the "blowback effect" that Dr. Paul mentioned in 2007, and you make it ever more clear that you have only just embraced Libertarianism in the past few months. It's just like some of the people around here: Alabama wins the collegiate national football championship and all of a sudden MS is overrun by "fairweather" Bama fans. That same principle applies to your ATPC.

I hate fundamentalists as much as you do, but it is not entirely the nutjob's fault. (Only 3/4 of the way)
You seem to overlook that for the past 65+ years that our gov't has had a policy of Empire building via the military-industrial complex.
If America was occupied by the Czech Republic, would you take that lightly?
(I might point out to you that we have bases in 192 countries across the world. People are getting fed up with our military occupations. Japan is an excellent example of this.)

I hold my head up high, & completely forgive my sometimes lackadaisical government for a few minor indiscretions in the past. Hopefully they won't repeat those few indiscretions. As for those 192 or so bases around the world you mentioned, I'd be willing close a few if the National Interest can afford to do so, otherwise, I'd wait until they try & throw the US out to see how the cookie crumbles. Unlike many inexperienced youngsters, which not long ago I was one, I believe in my country, & absolutely refuse to subscribe to the chants & rants of the misguided "Blame America First" mob in order to gain approval from the European scum that wouldn't loose any sleep if America would crumble---some are actively pressing the issue. As of 2004 we had troops in 135 countries. Shucks, the Brits have troops in about 20 countries. And I wonder if "occupations" is the most accurate description.

However tired people might be hosting our troops, I'm thinking that they might just ask us to leave. I think we'd accommodate them. Kyrgyzstan is a good example. They asked us to leave and we raised the ante to $63 million and provide $67 million to "upgrade" an airport. BTW, Russia has troops there, too.
