how to automatically turno off gprs / 3g when i switch to anoter application?

Hi. My gprs/3g internet bills are quite high since i installed opera. When i switch applications I notice my gprs does not turn off automatically. Is there a way i can do that? Sometimes when someone calls or texts me, the call or text application opens and i get involved in that application that i forget that my gprs is still running. Could you please advise me. Thanks in advance.

OM do not offer You that functionality! You need to look into your phones options!

Yes it automatically closes when you exit opera.
But he is talking about switching apps,not closing opera.

Oops disregard my previous post..hmm even if it is in background and connection is on ,no data is being transferred so there should be no further charges or do you get charged according time spent online? if you are on edge connection it is automatically closed when you call etc but 3g stays on.

Thanks for the responses.

I use a nokia e72. I am on Globe GSM. My data plan is time based. I get charged every 15 min.

I noticed my settings was on socket. I just changed to http as per advice of bigdope.

Please advise. Hope to hear from you. Thanks.

@mercury168 I've tried using Opera Mini v5 on HTTP and the network still shows as connected. I don't think this will make a difference to your Operator charging you for internet use.

I'm just wondering isn't there another provides or plan that has a fair charging based on actual usage or better still an unlimited data plan?

On a Symbian phone like the E72, holding down the end call key while on the idle screen will close the current GPRS connection.

I haven't enablede Opera Link on v5.
Pressing the end call key on the idle screen does give the option to end the connection.

@bigdope
even by using http insteadof socket, i am still charged when i switch applications

@selerus
the unlimited plan is 10 times more my normal usage so i prefer to just to find a way to disable the connection when i switch apps.

@sagrid
how do you disable sync link?

@yeswap
in my case, the end call button only closes / minimizes the browser window not the connection.

any more ideas?

my packet connection settings in my nokia is actually set to "when needed" instead of being available all the time. I think somehow, opera does not terminate the connection when i switch apps.

@mercury168 by setting the internet to when needed your phone will only attempt to connect to internet when you ask it to (either by browser or some application) and will not access internet on its own whenever internet connection is available.
And as yeswap said you need to press the end call key when on the idle screen and not on Opera screen. So minimize all applications and then press end call key and hold it for a few seconds, you will be prompted "End Connection ...?" select yes.

@selerus
I have tried your recommendation of pressing the end button after minimizing the applications and it works. Unfortunately, i only remembered doing this after around 8 hours as someone called me while i was browsing the net so it was on the whole time even after i switched apps. I wish there was a better way of automatically disabling the connection after a certain time period.
