How can I do clean install of Opera and save my settings etc?

I have installed various versions of Opera over the years and the path is becoming convoluted. I'd like to tidy things up by uninstalling, then doing a clean install.

How can I save my settings, preferences, bookmarks, mail etc so that these can be applied to the clean install?

Are there any potential pitfalls I should be aware of?

I have had troubles with all this before and don't really know the solution. Others don't seem to have any problems with "updating".

"Updating" should be made robust so that one doesn't have to pick through files to save and later copy over installed files.
