Opera and FastMail.fm gettin hitched

yehhhh.... very unsure about this whole takeover thing altogether.
So, here's my rhubarb.
[edit - I've looked this over before posting. Yup, it's a bit evangelistic, but hey it's my 2c]

I like FastMail. I'm not a business user or anything but I've just paid for another years enhanced. It's a damn good service.
Looking at my FM folders it seems I sent my first FastMail.fm email on 31 Jan 2002 at 16:48. Nice one! Rob and Jeremy, the founders, in direct conversation with their users; listening to their users - that's unheard of. I've never posted here before but I lurk on occasion and note that the admins/staff do post here beyond the boilerplate responses you usually got on these forums. So that's encouraging. I've no idea what OperaMail is/was like - since I joined FastMail I've never had a reason to look anywhere else but if you OperaMail folks are worried you probably shouldn't be. But then I'd probably be miffed too.

And I've been using Opera almost exclusively since the 90's. It came on a floppy with about six other programs! I've tried the Fox, but hey it's grand for people happy to tinker, and I do. But for day-to-day use and for those less gifted with computer/internet smarts it's really got to be Opera (and on the vanishingly rare occasion a page doesn't work then fire up IE).
I have no reason to even try Chrome. Something about a browser owned and run by the worlds biggest, sneakiest advertiser and personal data aggregator creeps me out.

FastMail works pretty well with the Opera mail client too.
Firefox AND Thunderbird? No ta, one interface is plenty thanks.
Lookit that, nice set of panels there on the right, click the mail icon and voilà! there's my mail and newsgroups all playing nicely with my open tabs.

And yet... I'm worried about what Opera's got planned for FastMail.
My favourite browser and my favourite email... gettin hitched *sniff*
Is FastMail going to become the new face of Operas email?
Is Opera going to gut FM like a defenceless little fishy?
Is Opera going to start fiddling round with FM, intent on "providing a more enriching user experience"?
FastMail works.
Opera works.
For [$deity] sake guys, be careful what you do!

Just a thought - I use my own domain name on top of FastMail. Can I assume this can continue?

The plan is to leave FastMail.Fm as it is as a separate service. But to use FastMail to improve/run Opera’s existing email and messaging services. In other words: you need not to worry. smile

When it's time, I think it'd be a good idea if you posted a "What do you want to see in a new operamail.com?" thread. That way, you can get targeted feedback on what users want. (As opposed to first doing it all how Opera wants and trying to hack in features etc. later). Just a thought.
