Multyspeddial!!!
Dear Opera Team!I think I have one very good suggestion for your excellent browser. So now I'd try to tell you about it.
As we know browsers were created to make easier the way of using Internet for us. At first, Internet weren’t so 'big' and people used to visit only a few of sites as usual. But after some time it became hard to remember the growing number of interesting sites. So people started using the bookmarks to remember favorite. At first there were only 10 of them, later 20, 50, 100, 500.. OMG. I’m usually like to see only 10 of my 500 links, but it's not so fast to find each of them in this mess. And here people find the speeddials very useful! Two clicks and your favorite site is loading! WOW! That’s good! But not enough.. I said I have only 10 favorite sites?! But then I have good mood I like this 10 and with bad mood I like another 10? Another 10 while working. And what I should do? At first it was only 9 speed dials, later 16, now 25. And what is next??? Don't you think 50 or even 100 speddials will resolve this problem?!!
And here is my idea! Multyspeeddials! They are just simple. I may have some categories of sites I visit. For examples "Social"(3 fav links), "News"(6 fav links), "HI-TECH news"(4 fav links), "Work"(5 fav links), "Fun" (7 fav links) etc. Ok. Let’s see what people usually doing while browsing:
"I'm at home. Oh, what about visiting my Facebook? (2 clicks to open with speeddial) And now I'd like to see my Twitter(+2 clicks)..and blogspot (+2 clicks = 6 clicks to open all the links). Ok. And I have to see 5 'work'-sites (2 clicks to open each site as minimum and together more than 10 clicks. It becomes boring.). Heh. Work is done. I'd like to see some news (Opening another 6 favorite links. That means more than 12 clicks. It takes a lot of time to open all of them!)"
And how could you make our life easier?! It's so simple! One speeddial is equal for as much links as you want! One click on "Social" speeddial --> 3 sites are opening! One click on "News" speddial --> 6 your favorite sites are opening! One click on "Fun" speddial --> 7 your favorite sites are opening!!! And what can be easier?!!
From technical side you just should make possible to remember a few links for one speeddial. Each link will be opening in its own tab and first should be the main (what user can see the first). Also you should make the option of naming the speddial. I think it’s clear to see in my example.
So, that is all for now. Thank you for spending your time reading this!
Sincerely yours, Vladimir Shvidkiy!

You probably came across the expression K.I.S.S. before — the same advice goes for your post. It is way too long and badly formatted, so I cannot be bothered to read it all.
The whole point of speed dial is that it should be simple to use, not complicated. Use sessions or bookmark folders to open multiple sites at once.

well - one could ask for "tabbed speed dial" means- one always gets the "first page" - looks exactly like speeddial now, but with ADDITIONAl and probably optional ability to click somewhere on the speeddial tab to get another page of bookmarks and so on - shoudl probably be called "visual bookmarks" and be merged into speeddial due to similarity^^

Hi!
I absolutely support the idea of tabbed speed-dial, I often found the number of available slots too few, even if I increased it a bit. I have some other suggestions for further improvement:
1) Each speeddial page/tab should be customozeable individually
(1a) the number of 'slots' can be set individually for each page
(1b) the background image should be set different on each page (this way I can assign a backround image that reflects the content of that tab)
(1c) individual background images might increase the amount of data synchronized by Opera LInk, so maybe there should be an option in Opera Link to tell whether background images should be synced or not
2) I have never used the search field on the speeddial page, I'd like to have the option to remove it.
3) The number of columns and rows is limited. Although I can edit the INI file, it would be better to have it set from Opera itself, without limits (so 10x10 if one wishes)
4) I would like to have an option to hide the placeholders of the empty slots.
The reason for this is that if I can apply a nice background image, empty placeholders may spoil the appearance to some extent. E.g. I have a 'finances' tab with 3x3 slots, the background image has its key subject on the left (a pile of coins or anything), so I leave the 3 slots in the first column empty and use only the remaining 6.
5) It would be good to have two views for the speeddial page(s): normal and edit view
NORMAL: you cannot add, delete, move or modify the links, and empty placeholders are NOT shown (this solves issue 4 as well)
EDIT: I can add, edit, delete, RENAME (!), etc. the links, can add background image, and empty placeholders are shown
Thanks for reading my suggestions, please comment (and hopefully support) them!

Timmi-T, yes, it's another way. I didn't know about this. But wouldn't that be more comfortable for Speeddial?
i wouldn't call it speeddial any more - its "bookkmarks with illustrations"
isn't really better thn normal bookmarks - it just looks fancy, so its mostly what apple does to sell crap for 1k$ - make it look better regardless the use
to be realistic - its much more pleasant to orient by pictures thn text, not for 100+ bookmarks, but up to 50 its more comfortable
how about making the "speedi-dial" scrollable, so one can scroll down scree-by.-screen to reveal the "bookmarks with pictures"
we should really stop calling is speed-dial now - we do not wnat it for speed-access but for the looks - and laziness to read^^

No need to ask only one subj...
Dear Opera devd, just give to us SppedDial, FastDial and Desktop FF extensions functions -
1. Folders , pics for folders
2. Tabs
3. Resizing Pics
4. Scroll Huge areas of page (when a lots of pics)
etc.
or give us extension API to provide these all functions by ourselvs ...

Opera's speed dial is only bookmarks with thumbnails. I think the original idea is to put a certain often-visited pages on a blank page, like on a cell phone. It should be supposed to be used directly without much thinking and searching.
Before Opera added speed dial, I had around 200 bookmarks. At the point it was announced, I thought, "it does not fit my bookmark database". Now, I have already had thousands of bookmarks. Folders and nicknames do much help on opening different pages or set of pages. Try folders and nicknames, you may like them.

I also like the idea of tabbed speedials (for work one another for home)
One could than maybe set the home computer to always show the "Home" speedials while the work computer always the "work" speeddials (without loosing access to the other, which could be done when you select not to sync the speeddials!)
@jbaliko
to your point 2 "Removing speeddial search":
You can remove the search in the Speedials by going to
- your search engines overview under "Manage search engines"
- select the search engine which is the one on your speeddial page and click "edit"
- Click on "details" and then untick "Use as speed dial search engine"
The search window on you speeddial page disapears and you got more space for your tumbnails :-)

I have been pushing for a multi-tab speeddial for since January 2009 Form Post. I have had to resort to a third party system, Tidy Favorites. Unfortunately, Dennis decided to redo it with Silverlight and and make it a server side app. It is not as functional as it was.
Leave Speeddial as it is for the purists that only want 9 choices and use their keyboard more than their mouse. I want a "Visual Menuing System" with tabs, up-loadable thumbnails and all the other things jbaliko requested. I currently use a 6x5 configuration for my daily startup browsing, Tidy Favorites for another 200 sites that I use regularly and 500 bookmarks for reference.
If there is a prodigy HTML 5/Canvas and Javascript person out there that would like to collaborative on doing a external system without Development Team help, please contact me.
