Requesting a list of tweaks for Power/Expert users of Opera

The config file has a LOT of options and it would be nice if some long time Opera users would share their settings with us. Particularly which "user/newbie friendly" settings that are on by default they disable. I've only used Opera a couple years now so I've not had the years and years of experience with what most of the long timers have long since turned off and which new user friendly features they turn off as soon as they're added to the latest version of Opera. Because let's face it the computer world is a two tier system with users falling into one of two extreme camps. Most use computers because everyone else does but would never have considered it if they were still a hobby/nerd thing only. The rest few are the nerds and hobbyists. :)
DOS 7.1/Windows 98 SE dual boot (with RedHat 7.1 to be reinstalled for triple boot "ASAP" ;-)
IBM 300PL from 1999 bought in 2003 for $149 Pentium 2 400 MHz 128 MB RAM
Scroll Wheel MS Mouse ($1.49 from Reuse Centre like new)
Iomega Zip 100 drive ($2.49 from Reuse Centre)
Asus 48x16x48x CD writer from 2002 (new)
D-Link DI-604 router from 2002 (new)
HP C3100 Scanner/Printer (ink used up; too expensive to replace)
Plus: 1997 P1-166, 1991 386SX-20, 1989 Amstrad PC1640, 1986 C=128, 1982 Atari 800

opera: config used to have help tips in Opera 9 but they don't work in Opera 10, hopefully they will get round to fixing that one of these years.

heres a link to Opera 9 s help file on opera:config its out of date so use with care but should give you some idea.

most of the customization in Opera is done in Appearance & there is lots of help in the help menu F1 keyboard shortcuts is a good place to start.
instead of pressing the menu button press the Alt key it opens the menu with the keyboard shortcuts underlined , very handy if you are in full screen go into full screen by pressing F11 then
press Alt e t t in sequence to turn on the tab bar etc..... F2 for a address /search field & F4 to toggle the panels selecting the windows panel make a great tabar relacement you can toggle on & off with F4 or right click the mouse & roll the scroll wheel to cycle through the tabs Ctrl tab works as well to cycle the tabs.

Lots of custom buttons available at
http://operawiki.info/CustomButtons
Not up to-date but most of the buttons still work & are very useful .
some of the buttons are named wrong for Opera 10 ...example a button for the Tab bar is called Page bar but if you drag the button onto your personel bar you can change the name in its properties, instead of PB make it TB & then drag it onto a toolbar.

this is a hard one

there is no unified list of customizations, addons, and not even a complete lift of opera features

opera and we (the community) are responsible for that.

however there are fantastic resources online:

http://www.fanboy.co.nz/adblock/opera/ best adblock list out there

http://homepage.hispeed.ch/ttt-o/index.html so many buttons

http://76.11.58.186/VectronicsOperaButtons.htm even more buttons

http://extendopera.org/ addons, customizations and more

http://my.opera.com/Tamil/blog/ many tips & tricks

http://my.opera.com/dude09/blog/ this blog goes a bit deeper than tamils, not really suited for beginners or non tech savvy users

http://my.opera.com/bpm/blog/ very interesting tips, again not really for non tech savvy users

http://my.opera.com/shoust/blog/ again not really for non tech savvy users, "Using block content to disable scripts" is a must read

http://my.opera.com/TJLeJeune/blog/ very interesting and useful panels

http://my.opera.com/portalnews/blog/ i would suggest following this blog, Joseph writes regularity fantastic articles aimed at beginners

http://my.opera.com/Lex1/blog/ fantastic userjs. adblock, flashblock, block-external-js and open-in-background-with-long-press are must haves

some config i use settings:

opera:config#UserPrefs|OpenDialogUnderMouse

opera:config#UserPrefs|EllipsisInCenter Shorten button and tab names in the middle

opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableOnDemandPlugin & opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableOnDemandPluginPlaceholder build in plugin block (flashblock)
