Strange "ghost" mail account hanging around

I have added an IMAP account then removed it but for some reason there is still the expandable arrow and it actually logs in and checks the remote IMAP folders (the folders show up when I expand the arrow). I have re-indexed the mail database, removed all unnecessary references to accounts in the accounts.ini, deleted any old mail/store/accountX directories and incomingX or signatureX files for old accounts.
I can only think that the config for this ghost account is sitting somewhere in a binary file or some other file I cannot edit.
Anyone seen this behavior and know how to remedy it?
