Scribd doesn't support Opera

I contacted Scribd Support Desk since after the site converted to HTML I cannot preview texts - and old pages in Flash give error too, asking me to download the latest plugin when it's already installed.

I received this answer:

ScribdGary, Jun 03 01:58 pm (PDT): I apologize for any difficulty, but we do not support the Opera browser. As such, I would recommend viewing our site on Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer.

Opera doesn't work masking as IE or Firefox either. Any advice is welcome (apart switching to Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer!)

would be fun if the whole my.opera forums nagged their butts to support it.

There are various issues here according to our analysis so far - one is that they are using vendor-prefixes in their CSS: -moz-transform and -webkit-transform without any Opera equivalents. We have a bug where we apply the "minimum font size" setting to any font size specified anywhere, instead of to just the calculated font size we'll actually render text with. Colleague Kåre describes it like this:

They use nested font-size similar to this:

Text

Instead of ending up with a combined 2em font-size, Opera translates 0.1em to the setting in opera:config#UserPrefs|MinimumFontSize and then multiplies by 20em, ending up with a much larger font size than intended.

It can be worked around by setting opera:config#UserPrefs|MinimumFontSize to 0.

(Aside: why they want to use such strange styling I have no idea!)

Scribd is sort of living on the bleeding edge of HTML5 development, they code according to unfinished and half-implemented standards, net result is that neither they nor we can expect everything to work cross-browser at this point.

Thank you for your explanation.

What happens is this: if the page has been encoded to show the document in HTML, then only the cover and some image inside is shown. The cover is far too large and covers other parts of the page.

If the page has been encoded to show the document in flash, then I'm told that i must download a more recent plug in. Reinstalling Flash doesn't help, however.

I don't know if the problems I'm experiencing have something to do with the problems you have found out to exist with their fonts, or if there is something else around.

Incidentally: Firefox reads the pages with no problem (that I know of). IE has some problems of its own, and sometimes signals that a script is slowing down the page uploading. Sometimes it crashes, too.

What's even more fun is that the books up for sale can be read quite well. So I don't understand what's going on unless they are actively blocking Opera for reasons unknown.

I thought hallvors made that clear:

Each browser company has whats known as vendor tags. Basically, the vendors want x feature in their browser that the w3c (the guys that define the standards of how to write a website) has not incorporated into the html spec.
(Ala, the infamous Netscape <blink> tag).

So what do these vendors do? Their ideology can be summed up quite easily. Pfft! Im going to make it so that code works in my browser anyway.Firefox is notorious for including such features. And that is how you have developers that only use vendor tags that work in X browser but do not necessarily work in Y bowser.

Of all the awfull websites why did it have to be scribd.

BTW: I need to be sent back to pre-school as I have terrible terrible spelling.

Thank you for your explanation. And you spell nice. smile

But if the same website does support a vendor tag in a series of page - where they are selling things - and does not support the same in another series of pages - where they give things away, what should I think the developers are up to? The ONLY thing different in the first kind of pages is that they have a link to another page (where I'm told I cannot buy a thing since I'm not in the USA).

Maybe I'm more stupid than I already knew. rolleyes

That is after spell check. Whilst typing, I have a wall of red squiggles.

Those developers, funny folks. I personally would use the browser that supports the site, as it is a site I frequent.

I have css3 on this page with vendor tags. However it should work in the majority of browsers (hover over the videos to see what I mean) - except for ie.

What is ironic is that I user moz transform on that page but it works in opera too. Why? -o-transform is the answer.

Mmmm, Blinky

Scribd doesn't support Opera? This has to be a joke, right. I tried scribd HTML5 "Try it now!" page and it fails in Opera. Why is this scribd page rendering flash in Opera 10.60 (Linux) rather than render in html5?

Scribd in HTML5

http://www.scribd.com/doc/30964170/Scribd-in-HTML5

The page displays properly in FF 3.6.6
"Go see the wizard, Scarecrow. I think he has something for you."

Blame Scribd for blocking Opera.

Also, what's with the trolling?

I'm able to log in (using a test build somewhere between 10.63 and 10.70 though). What are your cookie settings? Do you use Facebook to log in? And what exactly happens when it fails?
