Webcam
I think the webcam Unite application should be removed from the "recommended" applications list since it does not work (see the issue reported) and it does not seem to be updated. This is the same problem Mozilla has got with extensions. Basically Opera is associating its name with third party software whose code cannot be either reviewed (for bugs, memory leaks, security concerns, etc) or maintained when it breaks and the original author isn't working on it for any reason.
Right you are,
The First and last known Version of web Camera Application that worked was with the release of Opera 10.10 Nov 23, 2009: 10.10 final. The very next version of Opera that was released the web camera stopped working . I reported it both to Opera and the Author at that time. To date there Is only One Author that I know of that actively maintains and updates his Application . The writer of the white board App does a fairly good job of responding to Users needs.
Most of the Applications that Are available for OperaUnite Are designed by Volunteer Developers ,who because there is "0" possibility of a monetary return ,show little interest in continuing the Developmental process for their Apps. Opera could take note from Drupal site on how to improve this condition. Opera Should at least offer the Unite App Developers a Area On their Company web site to Offer there services related to there respective Application.
I am one of the biggest Fans of OperaUnite. This is because I war the Video Moderator at Our media from its start until two years ago. I know the excitement that Opera Unite could generate with a little attention. It would be Ashame if OperaUnite fell by the wayside due to lack of interest.
In less that one years time Ourmedia became the largest Videoblogging site on the Internet , with over a million users, it became the showcase Of drupal .That in turn triggered a cottage industry of Drupal consultants,Drupal custom Designers for apps and so on. You can find that type of info here Hosting and Professional Services For Drupal , OperaUnite needs to have the Same thing happen.
In a time Of Global Recession OperaUnite should not be treated as a inconvenient stepchild , but rather a show piece of the Opera Browser system, empowering small enterprise with the same advertising tools that the big corporations have. Full Time Developers should be assigned to Opera Unite apps by Opera.
Had the web camera Application been maintained and Developed , for instance let's say features including two way voice and video feeds such as Skype, I would think that Opera would be enjoying a much larger market share that they currently have. I believe that the same would hold true for many of the Other apps as well. The weserver app could offer https security for instance. There is much that could be done. If only...
cheers!!
