I don't think its possible that way. The reason he is not able to upgrade is that the OM 4.2 is the default browser in his phone. It is a protected app. You cannot delete or replace protected app in S40 OS (or anyother Java ME-based OS).

There is one thing you can do. But, you won't get a signed version by this method. See, your problem is that OM4.2 is named as Opera Mini. And, Opera distributes OM5 with the same name. So, you get an option to replace which it cannot be done. So,

1. Download the OM5 JAR file from Opera Mini computer site to your computer.
2. A JAR file is an archive. So, extract the JAR file (using WinRAR) to a folder (say Opera Mini 5).
3. In the contents of the folder, there would be another folder named META-INF. Open the folder.
4. There would be a MF file in the folder named MANIFEST. Open the file with Notepad. This file contains the information about the file.
5. Go to the line
MIDlet-Name: Opera Mini
Instead of Opera Mini, write another name like Opera Mini 5. That is, it should look like this.
MIDlet-Name: Opera Mini 5
6. Save the file.
7. Go back to Opera Mini 5 folder. Now, select all the files in that folder. Then, using WinRAR or WinZIP, add the files to an archive, and name the archive Opera Mini 5.jar (Don't forget to add .jar extension. Also, while creating archive, make sure you select the ZIP option in WinRAR)
8. Transfer the file to your phone using USB cable. Install the app, and voila, it will get installed in your apps folder with the name Opera Mini 5.
