10.5.3 Won't run on OS X
There are messages everywhere about this. Download, copy to apps, click on icon, the word opera shows up in the menu bar, but the program never loads. Erase, try again. Same thing. Erase, try again. Same thing.Yes, I searched for this. No, I had no luck. I'm sure it's in here (it's everywhere else) but the forum search is no better than the browser, apparently. Sorry, but this is VERY disappointing.
I've been having the following problems with 10.53 running on Snow Leopard (everything from the out-of-the-box version to
the latest 10.6.4 update). Are they fixed in 10.6? This has happened on three different Macs.
(1) I like to set "find on page" as my default search. It shows up as such in the search window on the top right corner, but if I type a term in, I then am prompted to pick ANY other search engine from a dropdown list (find on page is not listed there).
(2) Video playback doesn't work when the page is zoomed --- I get a couple seconds of the entire video (e.g., youtube), then part of the playback window screen freezes (usually the right side and bottom) and the remaining video plays back, with lots of stops and starts, in a smaller window.
(3) It will NOT CLOSE. I have to force quit the program every time.
I'd like to stick with Opera -- like the original poster, I've been using it since the really early days -- but this is driving me nuts.

Maybe it would help figure this out if we specified our platforms. I haven't had a serious problem with 10.53. As was mentioned earlier by Benboom, I also am on a PowerPC. Unlike Benboom, no slowdown problems, at least none I'm sure is Opera. Maybe the "failure to launch" probs were indeed the Mac-Intel implementation by Opera 10.53 while the slowdown thing is something else.
Oh, and OS X has had some serious changes between 10.4x and 10.5x/10.6 too. Won't be going there on this machine.
I am currently writing this on a Mac G4 Graphite 400MHz PowerPC with 896 MB of RAM, running OS X 10.4.11.
I do plan to install and check out the Opera 10.6 beta, just to see.

The OS I have been using is now 10.6, and was 10.5 (Leopard), with the same problems in both. Video playback embedded in Opera is
cranky. For example, if a page has a video embedded in it, it will have the problem I noted above, with the video starting out playing in the whole magnified window, then the right-hand inch or so freezes, and the video plays on in the remainder.
And the "find in page" option for the min search really seems broken. Can't get it to work.
The force quit problem stopped when I tried Opera 10.6, but the other problems remained. I'm now considering rolling back to 10.10 to see what happens.
