Seagate make them, I haven't had any issues with them (Apart from one, i can't remember what the problem was with it though, it was a fault across the whole batch at that time though), I've also had a Western digital Harddrive which was fantastic until i dropped it on laminate flooring...
I got 1TB (1000GB) for £75 at Maplins (I think, but it was on special offer, but i'm pretty sure that i've seen some around £100) that will last you for life (Don't hold that against me if you do manage to fill it up though), but if you want one that you can take around with you you'll probably be able to get one upto 500GB at a reasonable price.
But in all honestly i recommend getting an external e.g. 500GB then also getting a bigger one for backing up (So bigger than the first one and your computer combined), obviously if you cant afford two just get one. but backing up is highly recommended.

I always tend to shop online at Novatech, have always had good service from them:
Novatech
Would recommend a host powered drive (uses the USB power from the computer) rather than a mains powered drive for the convenience factor.
In the Novatech branded drives there's a 2TB drive for £110 although that is rather an excessive capacity (even ripping blu-ray discs you'd struggle to fill that space!). As Cat Charlie said a 500GB drive for about £60 would be ideal.
