Installing homemade widget on TV

Hi,

I'm running into issues testing a widget for TV - how do you install a homemade widget on a Wii?

I'm attempting to test a widget's functionality on a Wii by making it available on my own local Apache server and accessing it through the Wii's internet channel. The typical procedure for deploying widgets for Apache (adding an .htaccess file and a <link> element in index.html) was followed.

When accessing the server from another computer, the widget icon shows up in the address bar and it can be downloaded fine. However, the internet channel on the wii does not have an address bar on which to find this icon.

The question I have is, does this technique even work for the Wii internet channel, or is there some other method to install the widget on a Wii besides publishing it on Opera's widget site?

Thank you for your help,

Phil

Hi Phil.

The Wii Internet Channel is powered by an older version of Opera (9.30) which, although it can load widgets, is not as advanced as current versions and as you mentioned, has a much simpler UI. It's not really possible to save widgets locally - instead it's probably better to load a widget and then bookmark it as you would a web page. Please note that because the W3C Widgets and Opera Widgets specifications have changed so much (and still are), some newer widgets may not run on the Wii.

Incidentally, for testing I recommend installing Opera 9.27 which is the desktop build most similar to that on the Wii:

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel! I'll make sure to test with Opera 9.27.
