Oddity with new computer's Opera

Having trouble transferring my Opera setup to a new computer.
(Opera is 9.52 on both machines. Operating system on both pcs is XP Pro SP3)
So I thought I'd just try copying the entire Opera folder from the old machine to the new one. But if I go into the Opera folder on the new computer and click 'opera.exe', Opera starts up OK but the interface is basic, not customised, nor do I have my bookmarks.

But if I go to my old pc, open C:\Progs\Opera and click opera.exe, (just to duplicate the open process without shortcuts) everything is as it should be. So it seems to me that Opera on the old machine is getting its configuration settings from somewhere else than the program folder.

Anyone able to comment?

Thanks :-)

The profile folder, which you can find <a href="opera:about">here</a> or <a href="opera:config#Opera Directory">here</a>...

That's the folder you should copy when doing what you are doing, on the new PC install a new copy of Opera (rather than copy), then copy the profile folder, replacing the default one that is created during the install.

There's a couple problems you can run into if you simply copy/paste the program folder, for instance it won't be in Add/Remove Programs, any updates/upgrades/etc might not know where your install is, etc...

To simplify this in the future, you could disable MultiUser (0 disabled, 1 enable... in "operaprefs_default.ini" file in the program directory) which will create the Profile in the main Program directory rather than tossing it into ..\Documents and Settings\etc\etc...

You can also use the Classic installer which basically does the same thing.

Thanks Vectronic. Unfortunately, copying the 'profile' folder was one of the things I first tried. But it didn't work. I'll try it again, just in case, but I'm not optimistic.

Well when you run it, and go to one of those two links... what does it say it's using for your profile? Is it the one you copied, or something/where else?

Not sure what you mean. In PC2 (the new one) the location shown in Help>About is C:\Program files\Opera\profile. And because I overwrote the original 'profile' folder with a copy from PC1, it must therefore be the copy.

Also, I made sure that Opera's location was the same on both machines, and not in Progs on one, and in AppData on the other, as sometimes seems to happen.

Incidentally, I did retry your system, three times, uninstalling Opera from PC2 each time before trying again. But to no avail....(sigh) What I might try tomorrow (getting late here in NZ) is to copy the settings from my laptop, which has an identical layout to my old PC1.

Other than that, I can't see a solution that doesn't involve manually copying every detail from the old menus.
