Removing Opera System Tray Icon

Erm.. it can be removed, right?

I'm pretty sure the only way is to disable mail & chat - ALT + P >>> Programs & paths >>> remove the tick from 'Enable mail & chat'
A straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it is by no means the most interesting.

you cannot remove the system tray icon. What you CAN do is the following:

- Right-click Windows-Start button, select properties.
- choose "taskbar" tab
- click "customize" button
- for Opera, choose "always hide"

Maybe this is good enough for you. Maybe they will make the taskbar-icon removable in the next release.

Is this supposed to also work in Win 2000
When I right click the Start-button there is no Properties for me to choose from.
Thanks SP.

I don't like being forced to have an icon for Opera in the tray. It aggravates me, since every other developer in the world also feels it necessary to force a tray icon, too.

So here is a third-party solution, for those who are running a Windows platform other than WinXP, or for those like me who run WinXP but hate its built-in tray icon management feature:

the opera tray icon appears only if you use m2 (opera's client email) and irc.

The tray icon is only forced on you if you have chat and email enabled. They should change the option to "Chat, email, and annoying persistent tray icon".

Ohh I see... Actually, I kinda like the tray icon so I guess I'll just enable mail and chat for no reason.

I thought that there was an ini-file option in one of the 7.5 beta versions where you could disable the icon. Does anyone remember?

yeah I'd like to know too, I found this thread when I searched for HOW TO TURN OFF THIS ANNOYING TRAY ICON wink (double icon for me)

you know it could be ok but when Opera is in tray it's in windows task bar too and should be only in tray

when you'll use Tray It it works properly, but if you additionally use M2 I have 2 opera icons in tray; method posted above is just half-measure, the icon is still there

you know even Opera devs recommend Tray It http://www.opera.com/support/search/supsearch.dml?index=490&session=
(seems they know existing Opera Tray Feature isn't too good implemented so they still giving us a link for third party software :-D

No. The article about "Tray It!" was added long before Opera had a tray icon. I see no reason to remove it now, as some people may still want to know about it.

yes, I still use Tray IT and place from I heard about it first time was this board up
plus there are ppl who don't use M2 neither IRC but would like to keep opera in tray instead of task bar so TrayIT is perfect for them; the only problem happens when I'd like to use M2 and TrayIt which causes double tray Opera icon (Opera icon and TrayIt icon)

you, as a kind of Opera VIP should be most informed in this case:
is there a way to turn OFF Opera icon from tray when using M2? (ini editing or smth)

I'd also like to know whether there's an ini file tweak to stop there being two Opera tray icons. I don't mind there being an icon in the system tray when I minimize Opera there, but when Opera is open and running the tray icon should disappear surely, and there certainly shouldn't be two icons when it's minimized. It's not just a case of more clutter, it's also which one do you click on to reopen Opera.

An additional problem (which is probably an XP issue rather than Opera, but I'm hoping someone here will know), even if I use the 'always hide' option WildEnte suggested, the next time I use Opera the icon appears again and Notification Area properties has been reset to 'always show'.

Found the ini-file option on http://my.opera.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54441&highlight=ini+tray:

> Add this to your [User Prefs] section of Opera6.ini located in
> your profile directory:
> Show E-mail Client=0

I haven't tried wheather it still works with 7.54 or even 7.6preview.

it's not a solution, you can do the same in preferences by unchecking "Enable e-mail client and chat"

but we're talking here about disabling tray icon when you are using M2

I don't mind having a FEW icons in my taskbar but when Opera, Winamp, Syle XP, Norton & Co., MSN, it is UNBEARABLE.....

Why must everybody start having tray icons which eats up your RAM???

Some can be turned off like Style XP and Winamp, but Opera and some others doesn't have the option...

Maybe the courts will hear about this and pass a Law: "There must be an option to turn off the tray icons and use no RAM or there will be a fine of US$1m"

Just joking wink

It's not because there's a systray icon, the app eats more RAM... wink Just close Opera when you're done instead of minimizing it to the systray.
If you hide it or show it, there won't be a difference in used RAM, only in taskbar space...

I already have in tray Winamp, firewall, miranda, total commander, flashget and yes, I want more space p not two opera tray icons

but seriously, I want to have quick access to net so I don't like to wait 10 seconds until Opera finally will start, I want just click at systray and see it immidiately

plus when opera is running I see e-mail notifications as pop-up message in left bottom corner ("You recieved 3 messages")

we just want simply option to not showing opera icon in tray, it isn't hard as in previous version we haven't this feature so they know how to disable/enable it;

OR/AND improving this feature by hiding Opera from taskbar when minimized and show it only in tray, that's the way how TrayIt works

You can also use the -notrayicon command line argument.

On windows, by making a new shortcut for opera and putting the following in the Target field:
"C:\Program Files\Opera\opera.exe" -notrayicon

In Opera 11.64 (and possibly earlier versions, too), you can turn off the tray icon by going to opera:config and unchecking the box for "Show Tray Icon" and saving.

Or, click here, uncheck the box, and save. I am so happy I found this!

It's really upsetting to see that threads started in 2004 still have not been addressed by the Opera team.

It's 2012 and I'm using Opera v11.64 and there's STILL no way to disable the TrayIcon using the Preferences/Settings dialogues in Opera.

Does the Opera team not care what the community requests?

The best part is all the hackish workarounds that people discovered in 2004 do not work for the new Opera's since the Opera team wont stop moving and renaming the configuration files LOL!

Thanks to elshawno and ichiban-masahiro for their workarounds... SHAME on the Opera team for forcing us to use workarounds since 2004... 8 years guys, 8 years... (rolls eyes)
