Opera 7.60 Preview 1 for Windows available

Opera 7.60 Preview 1 for Windows is available for download. As usual, discuss the new version in opera.beta and in the my.opera.com Beta Testing forum. Please do not distribute the download link directly, but link to the post in opera.beta or in the my.opera.com Beta Testing forum.

Due to the experimental nature of this release, upgrading a previous Opera installation is not recommended. If you'd like to test your mail from a previous release with this preview, delete the \Opera\Mail\ folder, then copy your entire Mail folder from your old install to your 7.60 Preview 1 installation.

Download Preview 1:

http://snapshot.opera.com/windows/o760tp1v_7141.exe (build 7141)

=== Release Notes ===

- Gmail should be working much better than in 7.5x (but not perfect yet). However, we are waiting on changes that need to be done be Google. Check out the sign-in work-around to get started with Gmail in Opera 7.60. You must ID as Opera for Gmail to work

- If you are experiencing problems with secure sites that worked in 7.5x, please see the TLS issues page. Experimental TLS code in this release in known to cause problems on some sites. Please see this thread to report problems (and win Opera merchandise!)

=== Major New Features ===
* New start-up options *

One of the first things you will notice when you start Opera is the ability to select whether to use Opera as an Internet suite or as a browser only. The latter option disables Opera Mail, which can be enabled again via Preferences > Programs and paths. The first-time setup dialog also allows you to easily disable the personal bar and panel selector to increase your page viewing area.

* Speech-enabled browsing *

You may have noticed the increased size of the install file. This release comes with a set of voice libraries that enable the user to control Opera by speaking commands to it. Opera now supports XHTML+Voice 1.2 and the CSS3 speech module (properties new to CSS3 are prefixed by "-xv-"). With the default setup, you can navigate pages, have selected text read to you, and control parts of the browser. Select some text, hold down Scroll lock, and say "speak" or visit the IBM Multimodal demo page for a demo. More information about using voice can be found in the help files by issuing the command "voice help" or in the Opera with Voice tutorial. Join the discussions about this new feature in #voice on irc.opera.com.

Voice functions only work on Windows 2000 and XP.

*In-line error pages *

Opera 7.60 features in-line error pages, allowing you to continue to work if a page loading in the background gives an HTTP error. The error pages include helpful tips to troubleshoot possible problems and stay out of your way until you are ready to deal with them.

* Medium-Screen Rendering *

Not everyone has huge monitors or lots of free workspace. That is one of the reasons we created Medium-Screen Rendering (MSR), available by selecting "Fit to width" from the "View" menu. MSR reformats pages so they fit better on smaller screens. The end result is a page that is very close to the original design, but that should not require horizontal scrolling.

A detailed list of changes is available at http://snapshot.opera.com/windows/w760p1.html#important.

I'm loving this preview quite a lot. I can finally login in gmail (with the given trickery), scrolling seems smoother, etc.

The only thing I would like to see is an option to "only ask before exit if there are open windows" because I sometime type Ctrl+Q instead of Ctrl+W and close Opera when I have 5 windows opened ...

summat wrong....

the mouse scroll wheel only goes one direction!! I can drag the slider down, but it will only scroll up...
also the 'auto-scroll' will only go up, or left.. (press scroll-wheel down until a spot with arrows appears)

I've *never* had problems with this before, and yes, it works perfectly in Ver 7.54 - I have both versions working at the same time...

I really am loving this release.

I just installed it today upon learning about its existence on DSLR.net. I played around with the voice feature and I was screaming out loud laughing when I first played around with it. I kept repeating myself saying "my god these people are so innovative" smile. You are, Opera team! Keep it comin', fantastic work p

I was wondering what the confidence option under voice preferences was.. now that I've read this entire thread I know smile. Thanks!

P1 seems even faster than 7.54, yet again. I don't know how you guys do it or if I'm being dellusional here, but it really seems as if 7.60bP1's rendering is yet again faster than 7.54 smile
I love everything abuot this release so far! I only had one problem, but it turned out not to be that big of a problem. Other people would lay down on the floor crying if this happened to them.. I'm pretty cool about it. For some reason, when I installed this 7.60bP1 and wanted to copy my mail folder over to it from my 7.54 install, I couldn't find it anywhere! Somehow my entire MAIL folder has disappeared. I used email just seconds before installing P1 in 7.54, then I closed down, installed P1 in a new, seperate folder and then I wanted to copy over, when I noticed that the entire mail folder was gone. So in P1 I set up my mail accounts anew and I now have to start from scratch with defining filters, but I don't mind. I actually have a lot of fun playing with the filters and access points. You've truly created an email concept that I personally believe is the inevitable future of all things email-management/sorting/archiving.

No, I haven't tried opening 7.54 to check if all my mail and filters are still there. I probably will in a bit. I'm too amazed using P1 right now as to care about that silly little thing. I use IMAP so all my mail is on the server, I just set up a new account and boom, I have all my mail back in P1. Just the filters are gone. Who cares bigsmile

Fantastic work, guys!

I'm seeing that in recent internal builds, so feel free to file a bug report (and enjoy my referral p). I'm seeing the same thing in 7.54, so it's not a regression.

I didn't expect that link to stay there for very long, lol, but I thought I'd try. Wouldn't have generated any subscriptions anyway smile
I have a new bug, if this is a bug at all. I selected the SAND color theme, and now all the letters and words on the tabs-bar are barely readable due to lack of contrast. Check out the screen.

The Memory Cache in Preferences isn't working properly or there's a memory leak. I set the cache to 20MB max but when I check my task manager it says 75MB of memory in use...

With the Opera 7.5 series this wasn't an issue.

I see what you mean, MoeRL... looks like the 'tab fonts' need work - its nice to have colourful fonts,
but a menu is needed to check the read/unread(new feature!), view/non-view parameters of the fonts..

AFAIK the font colour in 7.54 is only black for 'in view' and white for 'not in view' ... (this seems to be reversed for 7.6 ?)

and yes, there were a lot of issues with 'mouse-scrolling' a few months back - why I dont touch a driver if its not needed...

Yes Chef!! (sorry, couldn't resist!! smile you have seen that 'chef' series with lenny henry??)
- there is lots about memory usage in the forum, but I wouln't worry about it unless the system performance is suffering..

I get the following screen when trying to login to at least two secure sites:

"Could not connect to remote server
The page is currently not available for Opera to display. Please check the following:

Are your proxy settings correct? Is a proxy required to connect to the Internet? Have you tried disabling proxies? Check that the hostname, IP address and port number is correct. No proxies

Try enabling Synchronous DNS if it is disabled and disable it if it is enabled, in Opera's Network preferences. No difference

Are you using Internet security software, such as ZoneAlarm or Norton Internet Security? Is this software properly configured? What happens if you disable this software? No difference

Are you behind a firewall on your LAN? No

Does other software work? Other browsers? E-mail clients? If not, this is not an Opera related problem. OK with IE(spit..) and Opera 7.54

If you are on a dialup connection, check the dialup properties for your connection and under Server types, make sure it is set to log on to the network."
I'm on high speed connection.

Anybody out there have a hint?
