Opera 7.60 Technical Preview 1 for Windows Mobile, Smartphone 2003
Opera 7.60 TP1 for Windows Mobile, Smartphone 2003 is available for download.Users must be aware that a TP is not a final product and does not contain all features that are expected with a final release. Furthermore, users cannot register a TP and it should be regarded for preview purposes only. The TP is free for all users, but will expire Dec 31, 2004.
Download Opera 7.60 TP1 for Windows Mobile, Smartphone 2003
Please provide feedback in these forums.
=== Tutorial ===
A tutorial explaining the features of the browser and how to best use them is available here.
=== Installation ===
To install Opera you need to transfer the installation file to your phone and launch it. If you are not familiar with installing applications, we recommend the following process:
1. Open ActiveSync and click on Explore.
2. Go to My Smartphone.
3. Navigate to "\Storage\Windows\Start Menu\Accessories".
4. Copy the opera_wmsp_760b1.cab file to this directory.
5. Click on Start and then Accessories in the Start Menu
6. You should now see the file that you cut and paste into the Accessories folder, click on it to begin the installation.
Note that this is a TP and that no work has been done on size optimization. If you have little space on internal disk it is recommended to install on external media. This will increase start-up time significantly, but browsing performance is not affected.
=== Connecting to the Internet ===
You need to configure an internet access point if you have not done so already. Detailed instructions can be found here.
Opera will normally work with the same access point as Pocket Internet Explorer.
=== Release Notes ===
This TP is limited in features, but in our experience very stable. It can be recommended even if you are not used to beta software.
The browser is based on the same browser engine as the Opera desktop browsers. In fact, this release has the same standards support as the currently available 7.60 TP1 for desktop. It also includes Small-Screen Rendering version 3.0 which provides even better usability, performance and layout closer to the original design than previous versions. This is the first publicly available version of mobile Opera to include this technology.
The user interface feature set of the TP is however quite limited. There is for example no bookmark functionality or scrollbar. This will naturally be improved in the future. We appreciate feedback and suggestions in these forums.
Only basic security protocols have been implemented. This may limit compatibility with some sites.
Detailed information about missing functionality and known issues can be found here.
=== Mobile Accelerator ===
The TP includes free use of the Opera Mobile Accelerator which compresses mark-up and image files before they are downloaded to the phone, thus speeding up browsing and reducing costs. The Accelerator is pre-configured and enabled by default.
=== Hardware and Software requirements ===
This release is only for Smartphone 2003. It will not work on Smartphone 2002 or Pocket PC devices.
The build has been tested on the following hardware:
- HTC Tanager
- aka Orange SPV-E200, Qtek 8080, I-Mate SP2 etc
- HTC Typhoon
- aka Orange SPV-C500, T-Mobile SDA, Audiovox SMT-5600, Qtek 8010, I-mate SP3 etc
Please post in these forums if you can confirm that it runs on other handsets or if you experience problems.

I confirm that it works on my SPV E200 :->
Installed on my SDCard I find it quite slow to start.
Tested on a large page (wanadoo.fr) it's faster than anything I've seen before, great job! :-)
An access to the bookmark folder would be welcome.
Not sure but I wonder about memory release:
I have let Opera on wanadoo.fr, came back few minutes later it was back on homescreen. It's normal, but the free memory was only 5%.
I had to reboot the device to get back to 60% memory free.
I've not tested this again. May be it's something else, I've so many stuff running .. ;-)

When I call an URL, it freezes on "15 KB Connecting..." for minutes and minutes and nothing happens, no message, no web, nope.
(Yes I have a GPRS data connection working on my C500 and no problem connecting the web with Pocket IE)

Works on MPx220
Dear all,I've confirmed that this release was properly installed on the Motorola MPx220. It also works fine. However, when I pull up www.google.com it displays the site in a foreign language.
I've taken a couple of screenshots for your viewing pleasure!

As you say the Homescreen will take over focus after a few minutes. But it does not actually shut Opera down. Just hit the "back" hardware key or the Opera icon to return to the browser. To shut down Opera and free memory, select "exit" in the Opera menu's. No need to reboot.

My internet connection is OK. It seems to be french specific problem : others SPVE200 and SPVC500 report the same problem in french smartphones forums
The behaviour you describe means that Opera is not getting any data from the network. I would guess it is a proxy issue, see this thread for more information: [url]http://my.opera.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69690
Can you check if your access point settings includes a proxy server?

Phonemag,However, when I pull up www.google.com it displays the site in a foreign language.
Normally this means that Google is sending you the language of the country they think you are in based on your IP-adress. Which language is it? Do you have a screenshot?
Try to click on the link "google.com in english" and restart the browser. Which language do you get the next time you go to www.google.com?

I've tried to install the cab on my i-mate PDA2k (smartphone se) and keep getting an error stating that opera_wmsp_760b1.cat file isnt a vaild Windows CE Setup file and fails to install.
Not sure what this might be. Is the filename ".cat" or ".cab"? (It should be the latter)
Do you get this error message while installing on the phone? Did you follow the installation instructions in the release post or install in some other way?

Re: Re: Works on MPx220
I've updated the post with three more screen shots here.It looks like Opera thinks that I'm in Norway. Scrolling down towards the bottom, I see a link that direct to Google.com english.
Honestly, it's causing the MPx220 to be really sluggish and I've already had to reset 6 times along with having to physically remove the battery because the screen literally locks up.
Most likely I will be forced to uninstall Opera and go back to IE

A) Contains a proper XHTML related content-type in its accept header.
AND
B) (Unlike other MS SmartPhone and PDA browsers which claim to support XHTML Basic 1.0 or XHTML MP 1.0) Renders 'true' XHTML pages which have the content type "application/xhtml+xml".
While testing my WML & XHTML-MP WAP application with the Opera WM TP browser, I noticed a few things:
- The browser does not support the META elements attribute name-value pair http-equiv="refresh" (which the desktop version of Opera supports).
- Text which should be rendered as 'small text' using the <small> element are rendered much too small (On my MPX200 the text is just about indecipherable).
EDIT
----
- The browser does not support the A elements attribute accesskey (supporting this attribute would mean that you would have to eliminate that history/go to shortcut key: #1 )
----
Hopefully the above issues can be addressed prior to the browser’s official release.
Keep up the good work

Sounds like we've left some language prefs in the headers. Will investigate.

That is very strange. It works great on our devices. We also have some Motorola MPX-200's re-flashed to Smartphone 2003 and even with the older hardware on that device the browser works very well. I noticed your post said Opera is "maybe" faster than IE, in our tests it is way faster. Several other reports say the same.
Any thoughts on how I should uninstall?
There is an add/remove programs in ActiveSync. Don't know if there is something similar on the device itself.

You are keeping in mind that this is an early preview version, right? It isn't even a beta, but a pre-beta.

No idea to be honest. Anyone else out there with an MPx220?
We'll try to get hold of a device ourself and test, but it might take a few weeks to get one to Norway.

Installed on C500. Runs perfectly, no hitches at all.
1. You must use exit tab to leave browser or it keeps loads of memory.
2. Really needs a bookmark facility. (I know it's only TP version but just a point)
3. Is there any way to increase the font size? ie. with an ini. file entry (pie. use zoom=# in registry)
4. Speed is great
5. Full screen is great
6. Seems to open up part way down a page quite often
7. Real slow at opening up. Is stored on storage card, would phone storage increase the speed enough to notice?
Keep up the good work.
Robert.
Edit: Just uninstalled from card and put on phone and it is much quicker at starting up.

Great work guys.
Thanks!

High up on the to-do list.
Is there any way to increase the font size?
Not at the moment. We'll look into it.
Seems to open up part way down a page quite often
That is actually by design, we call it "Content Magic". Opera will identify where in the page the text starts and jump directly there. Saves you from scrolling past the left side menu's which are on many sites. If you wanted to start at the top, just hit shortcut key "3" to jump to top. In the future this feature will be user configurable.

That is our experience too. Several times faster when installing on internal memory.

Now that is fast!!!!
Robert.
Ps. I also have connections in PIE set to Automatic. (don't know if you need this or not.)

Font bug
I am a software developer and one of my beta testers ran your application with mine installed and you display an incorrect font if others are installed. My application installs a new font into the system and your application uses it instead of the system font "Nina".Just email me and I will send you my application, you can install it, run it and them run your app and and it will reproduce.
Steps to reproduct on your own (in code):
1. Copy font file (Any .TTF Font, try Symbol to make it obvious)
2. Call AddFontResource() API with Font name with full path from your InitInstance() or any time after...
Your application will now semi-randomly use newly installed font. This is because you are either NOT specifying a font at all or specifying a font that is not installed. You must specify Nina font.

Re: Re: Re: Works on MPx220
Phonemag,It looks like Opera thinks that I'm in Norway.
It is because of Google's IP-sniffing. The Mobile Accelerator is essentially a proxy server which compresses the content and speeds up browsing. It is the IP-adress of the proxy that Google sees. This server is in Norway and Google therefore gives you a Norwegian page. Which is especially unfortunate because that page has a different logo than the english page and looks a lot worse in Opera.
You can "solve" this by turning off the accelerator. But that will slow everything else down (and add to your GPRS bill).
Friday, 15. October 2004, 15:19:47
When I tried to install it on my SD card, it told me it could not install there. I then had to install it on my phone's internal storage. Each had about 14Mb available at the time.
Some links inside Web pages don't seem to work--I have not recognized a pattern.
Password fields are entered as "*". Usually they display the character first, then change to "*" so you can see whay you've typed in there.
If I leave the browser active, then go do something else, then return to the browser, it frequently can't connect back to the Internet. I get an error message telling me it can't connect to the network.
Bookmarks would be great!
Looking forward to the next release.

I've tried TP on my QTek 8080. My first impressions are positive. The added features, and the apparent speed increase is very pleasing. One thing made me wonder though. It's about how the navigation/scrolling is intended to work. I sometimes need to load larger pages not intended for smaller screens, and some pages work well with the small screen rendering, other's don't. Pages with search forms for example, must often be rendered in "full page mode".
In "full page mode" the combination of scrolling and link navigation isn't quite functional in the current version. The active link is often hidden in the offscreen area. So my question is, how will it work in the final version?
IMO the active link should always stay in the active screen area, almost as in Pocket IE. Ideally I'd like to see the joystick only control scrolling, with the active link always staying in the active screen area. If there are more than one link visible in one screenful, one can use the keypad to go to prev/next link.
hope this wasn't to complicated.

Couple of things in a few minutes of testing. Of course I hit that same Google error, its nice that Sprint has unlimited data for when I need to turn off the mobile accelerator. Also seems like if you go to the address bar, then backtrack back to the browser you lose scrolling functionality until you reload the page.
If you dont exit sometimes it will not let you load up Opera again, it just sits there until you reboot the phone.
Bookmarks would be great... =)
Awesome work, I cannot even begin to describe how this technical preview runs circles around internet explorer. Will you guys be releasing updates to the release candidate? Or will we simply be teased endlessly until the full version is released?

Opera on WM2003 Voq Professional Phone
I am running the technical preview on a Sierra Wireless Voq professional phone (www.voq.com) with WM2003 Second Edition and find that when the built-in fold out keypad is used, 2 characters appear for each button pressed in web page text boxes. Eg: if I highlight the UserName box on the Hotmail login page and press "a", I get "aa" appearing in the text box. Is there a possibility you are processing both the WM_KEYDOWN and WM_KEYUP messages, resulting in 2 chars for each press?Note this only happens in web page text boxes, not in the address bar box.

I think I figured this one out. It believe it's links that open a new browser window that don't work. I also believe it's mentioned in the known issues documentation.

Addendum: On my phone (your mileage may vary) there's a "\Storage\Application Data" folder and within that an "Opera" folder. Within that is a "StartPage" folder and within that is home.htm which is what is displayed when the app is started and from "Menu->Navigate->Go to homepage". I created a new home.htm file and added my IE bookmarks, saved the file to the above location overwriting the original home.htm file and now I have access to my IE bookmarks. It's not the same as real bookmark capability, of course, but it's lot better than nothing.

My comments would exactly echo C500 above - especially the bookmarks! & the replys were just what I wanted to hear.
Looking forward to the full release!
EDIT - Oh, actually, I just noticed something ... when inputting a password into a form field, the asterisk seems to appear immediately without showing any letters at all. This makes it very difficult to input passwords.

Opera supports WML, but not WSP. The first is a mark-up language, the latter a network protocol. Most WML content can be reached over HTTP. Just write e.g. "wap.google.com". (BTW, we know that Opera's rendering of WML content could look better.)

I suspect your system is low on memory when this happens. This means that Opera cannot check that an instance is already running and give focus to that instance. Will be fixed in the next public release.

Sounds like most of your problems are due to low memory. Do you have a lot of other memory resident apps running on the phone? I don't remember the hardware specs for the MPx220, but I have seen a couple of other reports from people with that phone who say Opera is running fine.
Also, as mentioned in the release notes very little work has been done on optimizing footprint and memory usage for this TP. Hope to improve a few things in the future.

Here's the not-so-good. Opera takes a long time to load and uses up all my phone's memory. Maybe it will be slimmed down a bit in the final release--I hope it can be. It seems to get "stuck" quite often. For example, when attempting to load a page, I'll see something like "Images 3/3 46 KB Completed request." It will stay there indefinitely. After a few minutes of waiting, or attempting to reload, I press Stop, exit Opera and go back to PIE. Limited as it may be, PIE is fast. Is this just a left over display not being cleared or is the page really not fully loaded?
I would like to see the ability to make Opera the default browser. Is this even possible in WM2003? I click links in e-mails all the time and they invoke PIE. If I use Opera in the future, I'd like it to be invoked from e-mail links.
Thanks again and keep up the good work.

For example, when attempting to load a page, I'll see something like "Images 3/3 46 KB Completed request."
This is a bug in Opera. When you click on a link the progress bar will appear. However, instead of resetting to "Images 0/0 0Kb", it will show the size of the last page which was loaded. The counter will first change when new data is received from the server.
The "stuck" problem is then that Opera is not getting a response from the server. It's not getting stuck in the middle of the download, but not receving a single byte. It's a bit unfortunate that the progress bar makes it look differently.
That Opera does not get a response from the server is of course a problem. This is normally due to network problems. Are there any particular sites where this happens often? Does it help to hit stop and then try again? Do you see any difference with and without the accelerator enabled?
Re "long time to load", do you have it installed on internal disk or removable media? In our experience internal disk is several times faster on the MS phones. A bit strange, on the Symbian phones there is very little difference in start-up time between internal and MMC.

I don't notice the "stuck" behavior any any sites in particular--it just happens. It does help sometimes to hit Stop and try again. I have not noticed any difference with or without the accelerator.
I have Opera installed on the phone's internal storage. I could not install it on the SD card. I tried initially to put it on the SD card and it would not install--I never could figure out why.
Regarding the accelerator, does it compress images only or does it compress all data? I don't notice any difference in speed, but I keep the images turned off. I load the images for individual pages when I want to see them. This is why I love the "5" key so much. Do the images display slightly degraded? This seems similar to the Venturi compression program that Verizon Wireless uses.
The things that most prevent me from using Opera are the problems with the text boxes. If I'm typing (e.g. posting a repsonse in a forum) I'll get stuck in the text box with no way out and have to reload the page. Of course, I lose my text. The othe main issue is that in T9, if I back up to fix a word, it remembers my (incorrect) keystrokes and types them out as soon as I press one key. I have to change to tap mode to clear it.
Thanks for any assistance.

Also have had some problems where the app freezes on the phone and the phone has to be power cycled. This usually occurs when doing running the app, exiting and then trying to go in again.
Speed and rendering appear to be very good. I'm on a 1x network and it appears to be significantly faster than the standard IE6.
Any sense as to when a followup version might be available?
