Opera 7.60 Preview 2 for Windows available

Opera 7.60 Preview 2 for Windows is available for download. As usual, discuss the new version in opera.beta and in the my.opera.com Beta Testing forum. Please do not distribute the download link directly, but link to the post in opera.beta or in the my.opera.com Beta Testing forum.

Due to the experimental nature of this release, upgrading a previous Opera installation is not recommended. If you'd like to test your mail from a previous release with this preview, delete the \Opera\Mail\ folder, then copy your entire Mail folder from your old install to your 7.60 Preview 2 installation.

Download Preview 2:

http://snapshot.opera.com/windows/o760p2_7263.exe (build 7263)

=== Release Notes ===

- Please note that voice support in clean installs now needs to be manually enabled in Preferences > Voice. Enabling voice will prompt the user to download and install voice libraries

- Opera's help files have not been fully synchronized with this preview release

- A detailed list of changes is available at http://snapshot.opera.com/windows/w760p2.html#important.

"Block unwanted pop-ups" and "Smooth scrolling" are now enabled by default

confused Smooth scrolling seems to be off by default (installed p2 in an empty folder, so no existing settings were used).

Finaly! Thanks! cheers beer bigsmile

First reaction:
- a bin on right side of page bar with closed pages and blocked popups - upupup - neat and tidy implementation - GENIUS! PERFECT! faint knockout
- RSS notification and short progress bar showing up in address bar - nice party
- the X on tabs - up - but remember FF has default opening of pages in new windows while Opera keeps in the same windows - so it's easy to open more than 20 pages in one window and... there is no way to switch tabs in Opera! This must be delt with somehow before 7.60 Final. Hot suggestions for now - scaling X or automatic switching it off when over 20 tabs are open. And of course option to switch the X off completely in Preferences (many users use mouse gestures and middle-click to close tab so for longer run this X thing will be annoying and a waste of space for them - including me).

- the personal bar by default to ON down
- the new "View bar" and quick switch on/off - worried - totally useless for me, might be barely useful for average user, too much waste of space IMVHO. How about brand new idea of "partial toolbar" - of width 1/4 of screen (cut at some point)? AH! idea

- STILL NOT ADDED the tiny option "Pop-up Transfers window in background" to Transfers panel (like in my sig). sad irked

- possibility to place Status field on right side of menu bar would be wonderful! (I have this field packed together in one line with address bar and it's a bit too crowdy while the space in menu bar is being wasted. Hey! You can do it! In IE it's possible! bigsmile)

Blocked popups. I am glad Opera developpers implemented it so nobody will be able to say that Opera doesn't have something IE has but I have one suggestion:
The url for the popup that was blocked could be shown instead of the name of the site that was generating because they are impossible to distinguish now.

I know. Same here. But it's much more intuitive for average, non-tech-savvy user than previous little X in the right corner of menu bar, below X of main window.

But HEY!!! Where is the Frame -> Maximize in the page context menu?!? I noticed! p Bring it back now, will you? bigsmile worried

Would be nice to have a permanent indicator of blocked pop-ups as long as you are on the site which tried to open the pop-up (the bin could turn red or so).

Worse. I guess it's intentional. Firefox has such simplified tabs and Opera clones the behaviour. While for average user it might be fine, for many users (including me) it's unacceptable behaviour. I guess the most reasonable solution is to keep it on by default (most new users will probably like it and won't be confused what's going on when they click on the tab again - "it disappears yikes") while at the same time adding the option to allow minimize upon click.

BTW: Opera was praised for having "real, advanced MDI user interface". Now it seems to be gone and replaced by "basic, primitive MDI user interface" like in Firefox. sad

By saying "PERFECT" I didn't mean there is no place to further improve this great idea.. no no. bigsmile

Your idea seems reasonable and somehow relates to my need - a way to distinguish if there are pop-ups blocked on current page or the bin is only full because of closed windows? I'd like to know that immidiately, without need to look inside the bin.

And as michmaj pointed out - there must be also URL added to the name of pop-up - to know from which site it comes from.

Pop-ups!

I ran preview 1 with the setting of Block Unwanted Pop-ups.. and life was grand -- never getting any.

In Preview 2, with either Block All Pop-ups or Block Unwanted Pop-ups quite a few get through..

Here's two sites I bookmark and use quite often that now show pop-ups.. The yahoo one has sound, even worse than a normal popup!

http://www.weatherunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=23508
http://tv.yahoo.com/grid?lineup=us_VA63165&.hier=us_VA63165

I've also gotten pop-ups at www.cnn.com, but not all the time.. and ironically, when I get the pop-up there, Opera displays a little yellow box that says something like "pop-up blocked."

Is there a way to turn off the notification of a pop-up being blocked? I turned off the trashcan in the upper right and corner and now get notified in the lower left...

I also miss this buttons to minimize tabs.. but that's much less of hassle than popups!

Oh this is horrible. I can now longer left-click on a tab to focus on the previous tab. Ouch. Ouch Ouch.

Now Opera too needs a "focus last tab" extension. irked

I see why they got rid of it. If you have a bunch of tabs open, they shrink so small that all that appears is the X. If the tab is selected and you click on it, you would be forced to click on the X and it would close the page so left-clicking to focus on the last selected tab wouldn't work in that situation.

Ouch. I don't like the X. I want it gone.

I like Opera because of its functionality, I don't use FireFox as my primary browser coz it's just simple thingy for fresh converted users
OS, if you'd like to make a browser for all, it will be for noone, just make separate distribution like easy and uncomplicated Opera Light®© and leave andvanced Opera Full®© as it goes

if Opera aims to be another FF it will never win coz FF is free, hope full MDI will back, at least as an option love

- Personal bar disabled by default: Yes, this reduces clutter, but you can easily get it back. But the "start bar" shows temporarily, and doesn't clutter the UI while viewing a page, while still giving you quick access to searches and bookmarks.

- MDI: Right-click tabs to get the old functionality back. Full MDI is still available.

- Maximizing frames: Use "Open" instead.

Note that the UI is not finished, and will be tweaked before final.

No popups here. I don't think the blocking itself has been changed since preview 1. Just the way it is presented.

Installing over P1 crashes on launch

I was worried about the changelog that the window menu was removed, as I use it in my custom setup. My mods seem to crash p2 whenever Opera it starts.

Reinstalled P1, it worked perfectly again

It was the sessions, started with blank page and it worked again. Now my menu items have ~~~ in front of them. what is causing that?

I already filed two bug reports on:

1. pointer cursor for submit buttons not applied
2. positioning and floating of form inputs in labels not respected (read: forms are still borked)

Now,

User stylesheets work, as long as the selectors do not refer to the ID on the html element. In other words, CSS Signature doesn't work anymore. the reason for this may be some other, but I can no longer apply a user stylesheet for this forum. neither could I in P1.

Bug report on this needed?

-----

As for UI changes, the new setup is more moosely than ever. People who download my setup will no longer be so shocked :] Well, i will have to create a new one anyhow...

The X on tabs..

For everyone who doesn't like the X, I just installed a few skins.. (cherokee, leighdark and leighblue) and NONE of them show the X.

So.. install your favorite skin and see if the X is gone!

Of course, this just might be a short-term fluke of the skins not working properly with the preview...

to minimize page I had to:

before:
  • I just clicked at tab

now:
  • right click on tab
  • choose Arrange
  • choose Minimize page

execuse me, but it's NOT the old good functionality down the rest of changes (instead of removing "Skin" from view but it's easy to fix with changing ini file) seems to be positive

How do I get rid of the tray icon?

I'm not sure I like the new UI changes, simple is good but not if it means making useful functions hard to find. It still takes a lot of configuration to make the UI decent, adding the status bar, removing the new home bar, making the tab bar auto-hide, making the progress bar pop up at the bottom, etc. Having the click on a tab's close button is quite annoying for me, I'll most likely hit it by mistake when trying to switch tabs.

It seems Opera Software's strategy with technology previews is to introduce new functionality with no way to turn it off. Then people have to use it, and won't get stuck in xenophobic mode and switch everything new off immediately smile

No doubt it will be configurable in the final version.

(They better! I already hate the little crosses that hide the three letters I normally have to distinguish my 16+ windows by!)

/RS

Edit:
Anyway, you can just comment out the sections
Pagebar Close Button Skin
and
Pagebar Close Button Skin.selected
in Opera7\skin\standard_skin.zip\skin.ini, then the
buttons goes away. I'll have to find out how to reenable
the top-left close button as well smile
