OBML - mode for desktop

For all those who suffer from using slow and or expensive GRPS or 3G links but use a desktop or netbook to connect
A OBML compression mode would be a very nice idea. Installing Opera Mini on a desktop is a possible but not really good solution. I wonder if it would be a great effort to implement a OBML engine or maybe a kind of OBML to HTML proxy.

is OBML (opera mini) mode

a) there is the Opera Mini Simulator that works exactly like opera mini
b) for desktop use there is Opera turbo that compresses pages on the opera servers before sending them to the client

Some people have requested this feature for saving to OBML before transferring saved pages to phone for later offline reading - Opera 10.50 alpha preview (released in December) could do this, but the functionality was removed.

However, you seem to want it to speed up your connection, for which you can just use Turbo that does exactly the same thing.

no opera turbo does not the same thing! It works quite differently and its compression ratio is way below opera-minis obml. Of course you can use microemulator but opera-mini is too limited to be used on a desktop.

I haven't tried this myself, but I think it's possible that emulating Windows Mobile 6 combined with some flavor of Opera Mini for Windows Mobile would yield a better user experience than the Java-based Opera Mini emulator. Then again, if you're going to be messing around with installing all kinds of extra applications, you might also try to make the Mini emulator emulate a larger screen. Heck, I don't even know if Windows Mobile can easily support proper desktop resolutions.

It even took me quite a while to make downloading work. Using microemu is way to complicated for most people. The problem here is that the developers do not understand the importance of all those who dont live in the so called first world!

You could always run Opera Turbo with various things disabled (images, scripts, even styles...). I'm not sure if you can really claim that Opera doesn't understand that kind of situation given that there aren't even any Turbo competitors out there?

Actually there are some others to like bitstream bolt ucweb ...
But opera turbo is a step go the right direction only it is not sufficient in this part of the world. Obml rendering is the best way for all those with slow expensive links. It has a great potential against all these resource hungry pages.

Wasn't your complaint that Opera Mini doesn't come with the power of the full desktop browser? I suppose some of those could class as competitors to Opera Mobile with Turbo enabled, though I fail to see how they would achieve higher compression rates akin the OBML simplification of webpages unless they weren't full-featured.

I think you misunderstand me. I would like to see obml support in opera not the other way around. For most pages obml is just good enough but a lot faster & cheaper

I am 100% with the thread starter. I have tried Opera Mini on PC and it was fast and using a lot less data (even compared to Opera Desktop Turbo ON). I really hope we can get option to use this function on PC as it can help a lot, especially when your quote is running out.

Really hope that we can have this feature in the not to distant future.

Thanks to Opera Team for their unique compression for Opera Mini.
