Today’s Good News

Have you noticed that we usually debate only the bad things in life.

Well, for a change, I thought I’d introduce this thread where anyone can put down current news that they think is good (can be political but not nasty, please, e.g. not Mr Bush catching a cold please!). We can debate the Good News and then move on when someone else posts some more happiness!

So I’ll start with this gem, which will brings tears of joy to many, I am sure.

Chocolate is Good for you

Yes – it’s official
Dark chocolate may be healthier

It’s good for a cough and it’s good for your heart.

People say different thing about chocolate and the effect it has on people, some say it's unhealthy and full of fat, others say it help as sex supplement or the alternative for it, others say it's healthy and all sort of thing. But what should i believe?

And where jbrothernew37 did the slave ships arrive - northern ports of course in the would-be principled Union. Quite happy to make a buck so don't give us the high ground. Your pal Lincoln was content to allow slavery if it kept the South in that Union. Even some of the things he said in private about not allowing negroes too much makes a mockery yet again. And to this the disgraceful way the same blacks were treated after the Civil War you need to re-look history. Look what you did to the indians and the fascist general Sherman who in public was determined to wipe them out. Early ethnic cleansing like the Nazis. Slavery would have went in the 13like elsewhere and remember how long it took America to catch up on that one! You walked into that one!

Ikeja – The National Drug Law
Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Friday
said that it had arrested Britain’s most
wanted fire arms and drug suspect.
A statement issued by the Chairman of
the agency, Alhaji Ahmed Giade, said the
suspect was arrested on Sept. 13, in
Lagos.
The statement said the suspected
fugitive, was apprehended by officers of
the Joint Task Force (JTF) of the NDLEA
during an intensive manhunt for him
around the country.
“The NDLEA has a statutory mandate to
partner with other countries and
International organisations in the global
fight against illicit drugs.
“We shall continue to partner with all
stakeholders in the drive to halt the
trade in narcotics as the country is not a
safe haven for drug barons,” it said.
The statement also quoted the
commander of the JTF, Mr Sunday
Zirangey, who coordinated the
operations, as saying that preliminary
investigation had commenced into the
incident and that additional information
was being gathered and processed on
the suspect.
“The suspect, an indigene of the
Lancaster area, in the UK, is wanted by
the Operation Greengage Team for his
alleged involvement in the importation of
cocaine, cannabis, firearms and
ammunition into the U.K. from
Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
“A European arrest warrant was issued
in May 2008 because it was believed that
he had links with the Netherlands,’’ it
said.
The statement quoted the Lancashire
Constabulary Police, as saying after the
arrest, that the suspect would be
extradited to face criminal charges in the
U.K

I've lived here for some time, now. Blacks were treated badly long thereafter.

Slavery came to an end in the British Empire on August 1st, 1834, when legislation passed in 1833 took effect. The legislation specified an apprenticeship scheme for the freed slaves that in some cases caused them to be treated harsher than before, but the last of slavery in any form in the Empire came to an end by August 1st, 1838. The legislation also compensated slave-owners with £20,000,000; the slaves received nothing besides their freedom. (source)

That's a lotta £s, sir.

That said, we all have our problems:

'No blacks, no dogs,no Gypsies' By Rachel Shields Sunday, 6 July
Gypsies and Travellers in the UK are uniting to form a nationwide coalition to fight what they describe as rapidly escalating levels of racism and discrimination. The leaders of the nation's largest Gypsy and Traveller organisations will hold an unprecedented gathering later this month with the aim of bringing together the country's 300,000 Roma, Irish, Welsh and English Gypsies and Travellers in a national federation.

And there is a crowd that need a good spanking. They don't want to live in permanent homes but use the educational system, the Benefits/Welfare State facilities. An awful lot of these tinkers come from Ireland originally more than anywhere. One for example is into multi-million proprtydeals in the Irish Republic. How that one is explained away is anyone's guess. They also seem to think they can dump themselves on other folks land even when Local Council Authorities supply camps (at taxpapyers generosity). The figures quoted sound inflated to me but if it runs into 6 gigures that is another army of scroungers. I'd pack the whole lot off to Michigan. When they move in Jaybro I will put you up in a spare room because your patience would soon get exhausted. If they don't want to live like the rest of we taxpaters they shouldn't be getting money dolled out. Note they have caravans and cars?

Anyway that is nothing like the situation with the blacks in America that goes into mega proportions and still have the hallmarks today.

I am am very much an active Protestant - Presbyterian to boot! No I didn't know you once wanted to be a priest. Years ago I worked with a young man who was a temp worker and intended going into the Romish priesthood. He humuously suggested that he would get me down to the seminary for a face to face with the 20 odd there. I had a good laugh about that one as I told him "any time" as this son of the Reformation was equal to 20 trainees priests! I never did get and the seminary closed in fact we don't have one left in Scotland at all. Hey maybe it was me?!

I do believe there's almost 200,000 people living in Grand Rapids. Might seem less inhabited than a European city of comparable size due to urban sprawl though.

"Moody's says it (Portugal) is likely to join Greece in a second bailout because, like with Greece, private lenders are going to stay away for longer than expected.
Investors ask why they should buy the bonds issued by a country that will be forced to change the terms for the worse mid-way through the life of the loan. That is what Brussels is contemplating for Greece. Moody's naturally assumes the same will be imposed on Lisbon."

"Noting that Portugal has been given more time to reach its budget deficit targets than what was previously expected, Socrates said the conditions agreed under the deal requires the EU member-nation to cut its budget deficit to 5.9% of GDP this year, 4.5% in 2012 and 3% in 2013.

The EU member-nation had earlier aimed to slash its record public deficit from 9.3% of GDP in 2009 to 4.6% this year, 3% next year and 2% in 2013. The country's unemployment rate had touched a record 11.2% last year." Higher than in G.R. But people in Portugal may prefer higher unemployment.

All of the folks I know in Grand Rapids are doing relatively well. How's life in Lisbon, the EU's liability?
