Proxomitron: highly flexible, small but very powerful, local HTTP web-filtering proxy

Proxomitron is one of the essential tool, everyone should use. It is better than Privoxy and Ad Muncher

I request you to post filters, questions, etc., in this thread.

Edit: more problems cry, will check rigoriously before posting next time
Edit again:
Some other filters were interferring :sigh: and then opning in opera caused extra enter characters

Opera anti anti-lounge filter

This adds Lounge forums - software, etc to http://my.opera.com/community/forums/

Download this(which includes both the forumgirl and anti-anti lounge Filter) and then open in notepad, copy and import.

New Opera Mod release of Grypen's set - linked in my sig.

Changes are:
Cleaned up FARK again, took out both sidebars.
Cleaned up Amazon search results - who needs sponsored links when you're searching to buy something?
Updated Kye-U to latest version, stripped out filters targetted at IE and Mozilla.
Integrated jjoebugs OpenOn filters, all you have to do is read the readme, and add the bookmarklet.

New Opera Mod filterset release prompted by Grypen's new release. 10/16/05. Beyond the Grypen updates and changes, I have again pared it down a little to focus on Opera issues and remove all IE specific and Mozilla specific vulnerability filters.

Added a filter that hopefully will stop the blank pages showing up in Opera from download links

Removed some old config data that isn't used.

Sorry about this, but there is another update. This is so soon as it's some fixes I'd been persuing for a while(as well as some NICE filters from various forums) and Grypen came out with the new set, and now it finished up so here's the latest:

New google Ad-remover that also removes the toolbar ad at the bottom.

Fixed Fark again, grypen's new release broke the filter order I think.

Added Paranoid2000's fix for relative link's breaking filters. Hopefully will make the existing filters more effective again. - added a new keyword urlfix to allow disabling it selectively on problem sites. This keyword may change.

Extra Onion Slicer from jjoebug - get rid of an ad page before content at the onion.

Also fixed up the google blue theme so indentation and URLs work right again, also thanks to jjoebug.

As always, get it from my sig.

i have a questiom regarding the latest opera mod of grypen's set (10/19/05)you have in your signature jd10558. my javascript doesn't work in opera because of that filter...i can't use buttons on opera wiki or open screenshots on gamespot for example....which web page filter(s) should i disable for these things to start working again? (i have everything set as it was by default when downloaded)

thanks

There was a glitch. I'm doing a bugfix release as the filter causing the problems seems to have been fixed.

Bugfix Release:
Updated Paranoid2000's filter that was breaking so many URLs (especially javascript) with a new version that seems much more stable. I've been testing for a day with no immediate issues, tests on newegg and other previously problem sites show it's working for me anyway.

Sorry, no other cool changes.

As always, get it from my sig.

Remember, any sites it doesn't fix you can add to user-include-exclude like this:

www.example.com $SET(keyword=.urlfix.)
Opera 12; Windows 7 x64 SP1; Intel Xeon W3550; 12GB DDR 1333; 3.5M/128k DSL ; Comodo IS 5.10;Proxomitron 4.5j Sidki 2010-10, Custom Filters;

New release - not much changed.

New google Ad-remover that also removes location specific ads.

Performance Update to Paranoid2000s relative link fixer. Remember - if urls seem to act weird you can use the key urlfix to bypass this filter only on that site in user-include-exclude.

Added bypass of add filter per Grypen and jjoebug to let the track button show up on UPS.com

in my sig.

New release today of the Opera mod. Available in my SIG.

Removed some text ads at ZDNet.
Fixed google blue theme to put thumbnails back + extra power links again.

Other misc fixes. I haven't merged Grypen's latest set as really all he did was add Kye-U's latest set, which only had an update for IE - so nothing of use to us Opera folks. Whenever he has some changes that are worth merging back, I'll update.

As always - thanks to jjoebug from prox-list, he's amazing!

New release today 12/17/05... Many updates/changes. I don't know about Grypen, but I've got enough to warrent a new release I think. Thanks mostly to others as I have just a passing understanding of the filters myself.

Here's the changelog:
Remove Mapquest sponsored links.

Updated make links absolute to exclude Opera buttons and such.

Added a new version of Mark: CSS as recommended by Paranoid2000.

Updated some filters as suggested by Paranoid2000 to more fully catch ads.

Added ssl.google-analytics.com to Ad-User-Domains to block Google Analytics tracking.

Updated Anywho ad-removal filters, thanks to jjoebug.

Did some more fixing on the Make all links absolute with help from Paranoid2000.

Implemented changes to make sure tracking is disabled on BBC sites (NetRankings).

Added blocklist entry to fix issue with nvidia license site.

Added Dissident's faster floating ads blocking filter for testing - you can revert to the old one if you want.

Yahoo Mail filter to fix js so dropdown menus work in Opera.

Hope this helps someone anyway. In the usual place - see my sig.

New release due to: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=117908 and some other things.

Changelog:
Yahoo Mail fixes for Opera.

Removed some text ads at New York Times

Kye-U update to kill wmf downloads due to the recent vulnerability.(Updated to the HEX matching one)

Added Softonic ad remover from Grypen.

Merged in Grypen's latest set

For those watching, I've had some up and down set updates. This is due to some glitches with filters and some rewrites of things like the Kye-U one. So as of the last edit of this post, there actually is a difference between this set and the earlier ones dated today. This one works fine.

Hi JP,

One little addenum to your set.

[HTTP headers]
In = FALSE
Out = TRUE
Key = "URL: All File Extensions Force Filter (Out)"
URL = "*.*"
Replace = "$FILTER(true)"

This is essential for my WMF Filter to work wink (Allows all file extensions to be matched)

Jp, thanks for your helpfulness and enthusiasm !
I am about to start using Proxomitron mainly due to your good info.

Your references to Allegrosurf as a help to caching interest me -
would you please elaborate as to how it is set up and what sorts
of advantages it might have for me as a dialup internet user ?

I have visited their site and it appears that there is one download
for 4 different usages - is this different from the version you are
using ?
Is there a download someplace of a simpler, older version like yours ?

Pages in general are very slow to load for me over my connection which
averages 30k or less, so I constantly have images not loading to help
speed things up a bit.
I am hoping that Proxo will help this, and also dump the nasty things
which flash and distract which always load anyway, and to take control
of the weather page I always keep open...

Thanks, and Happy New Year to Everyone !

Hi Again.
I started using Proxomitron today (JP's 4.5j Grypen(Opera MOD) 12/31/05) and it
is making my life a bit too interesting already !!!
Tried to post here and got an error page in response - tried several times and
either got the same page or one telling me I wasn't authorized for something...
shut off the proxy setting and found I had posted the same message on this board
several times but hadn't been able to see what happened !!!
Could someone educate me about this please ?

JD5000's site mentions a filter set but his site appears not to have been updated
since 2003 - is that correct ?
What appealed to me there was his 'trusted.txt' thing, in which I presume I could
simply add my.opera.com and be done with error messages perhaps ??

Thanks,

mark

You may want to try sidki's set, which is generally considered a bit more advanced, but it has easy methods to allow javascript and other stuff.

http://www.geocities.com/sidki3003/prox/prox-config-sidki-2005-06-09.zip

Method to access proxo's menu (sidki's set): http://my.opera.com/chesss/blog/show.dml/34546 . Now select 'all javascript' and click 'List' and Ok in thedialog box that pops up.

Well, I stopped using Allegrosurf when Opera came out with version 8. This is because Opera's own caching mechanisims improved to the point that I was only seeing ~4% cache hits in Allegrosurf, and then only when Opening a bunch of tabs from a "cold start" of Opera. So, I don't think it will help anymore, even on dial up (unless several people share the connection and might hit the same sites within a few hours).

As to newer versions of Allegrosurf, I can't really say, it's been months for me. If you do want to try it, you should chain Allegrosurf to Proxomitron, i.e. have Proxomitron be the last local proxy hit.

This isn't a proxomitron issue, or as far as I know, not specific to proxomitron. It's an ongoing issue with the custom forum that Opera built. I hope that we eventually get rid of all the site weirdness, but it's not yet quite there.

Actually, My set is derived from Grypens which is derived from JDs last alpha set. He has stopped maintaing a set *sob*, because he thinks it can all be done in userjs *snort*. At least that's what he had said. I have my doubts, especially as he hasn't released a userjs version of his set. I personally think he just got tired of maintaing a set, which is understandible.

Grypen removed the trusted list as it seemed to be duplicating the bypass list - that is, it just bypassed everything in individual bypasses rather than the global one. It also was more processor intensive, as it had to hit (be checked) on every filter etc...

If you want to trust a site, use the bypass list. Then no filtering will take place on the site.

As far as I know, in my set anyway, javascript is in general enabled. Certain "nosy" scripts are modified, but all in all, javascript just works. Make sure you haven't disabled it in Opera under the F12 menu.

You can mostly stop javascript editing with the js keyword in User-Inculde-Exclude like :

([^/]++.|)dell.com.au/ $SET(keyword=.js.)

Oh, my bad then! It didn't work on a couple of websites so I just assumed it was off o

P.S.: Another thing, see screenshot below. Opera doesn't show the downloading file's size anymore.

Indeed, some files do not show their size, but not all. I never thought proxomitron might be causing this, but now it seems that might be the case. I'll see if I can figure out what's going on.

Can you give me the full URL you're using to attempt the download? Preferrably also with the download page URL.

Ok, it seems to be caused by the WMF vunlerability fix with the header filter Content-Type: !!!Filter All File Types {P} [Kye-U] {JJoe} (In) to catch misnamed WMF files. This filter will be removed once MS distributes a patch and it's verified it works. Until then, (unless Kye-U come up with some magic) we'll have to deal with do download time estimates - or use an external download manager like GetRight.

You could disable the WMF protection filters if you want.

Well, MS released a patch for the WMF issue today. So I'm testing around without the filters, and seeing if there are any issues (I doubt it). I'll wait a day or two to see if anyone has any issues with the patch, and if not, release an update without the filters in there.

Update:

Removed WMF filters as MS has a working patch out. Also this fixes the no download estimate problem.

Removed sponsored links from Tom's hardware articles.

Small update, but I wanted to get rid of the now unnecessary overhead from the WMF filtering.

Before installing, make sure you have installed this patch:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0C1B4C96-57AE-499E-B89B-215B7BB4D8E9&displaylang=en

and rebooted. Then you can safely update to the current filterset.

The recent spate of updates was specific to the evolving WMF vulnerability, and the proxomitron protection. Usually I do not update that often, ranging to every 2-4 weeks instead. Always look at the changelog - if nothing important to you has changed, there is no need to update. I certainly do not mean to cause undue headaches, or very frequent updates - but sometimes the situation forces me to.

Thanks
