Opera Updater not working when user hasn't got permission on Application folder
Hello altogether,as you all know, since version 10 of Opera, an auto-updater helps one to keep opera up-to-date. This works perfectly for me when working under windows and linux (a window pops up and informs the user to update opera by using the in-build updater by the distribution). But ever since I had trouble under Mac OS (10.5, Intel).
My configuration doesn't allow me to write to the application-folder. Each time I want to add/delete or just update programmes, I have to enter the administrators password. I do so due to security issues.
But when the opera updater starts, I don't have to to confirm my password and so the update fails in the end because it simply hasn't got the permission to access the old version. I have to download and install the newest version myself.
This problem occurs ever since the updater was added (in version 10.0?). It's not a big matter, but I wonder why that this little glitch was never fixed till today. Maybe someone's happy looking for a solution.
Greetings, Simon

I was wondering if you found a workaround for this problem, as this is a problem for me as well. Whenever there is an update available for Opera, I have to download it from the site and install in manually because I do not use an administrator account for web browsing. Is there a way to cause the updater to request credentials for installation? Thanks.
At least for me the problem persists with Opera 11.00 on Mac. It does successfully download the update (at least it states this) and asks me to restart for installation (now or later). But restarting brings up the old version and nothing else happens. The error console does not give any hint.
Since my user account has no administrative privileges I have to enter an administrator account and password on access to the applications folder and other system modifying actions.

I would like to understand how to download and manually install the updates successfully, as I have the same problem of requiring privileges access trying this route.
Maybe I am missing some way of manually installing other than following the download process and putting the icon into the applications folder.
Any help would be appreciated as the v10.10 that I currently use is playing up and I am having problems that are seriously affecting my work.
Many thanks

Does anyone know if Opera has properly resolved this problem yet? I am still unable to get past the failure to install in the applications folder due to 'lack of sufficient privileges'. I am the system administrator but there is still appears to be no option to give permission to activate the installation.
As others have mentioned, the problems with older versions of Opera are severely affecting my work and I have to run alternative browsers in parallel but I prefer Opera above any other browser and really don't want to give it up ;(

daniel, I'm trying to upgrade from 10.10 to 11.62 at the moment, but have attempted all the versions in between with the same results. I keep hoping Opera will have fixed the problem and included the option to enter an admin password, bearing in mind it was flagged up at least 18 months ago.
On my first attempt Console statement was:

Hope you can advise

The problem you experience was fixed after the 10.10 release. Auto-update will never work for you without first manually updating to a newer version once.
You can get the latest version from http://www.opera.com/browser/download/

daniel, can you just explain exactly what I have to do differently to 'update manually'? I have not relied on auto-update but downloaded from exactly the link you provide. The problem arises when moving the software to the Application folder because it does not ask for the admin password, so will not allow activation. Are you saying the latest version should be asking for this?
