New to Opera, and not sure where to go? Ask any question here!

Are you new to Opera, and not quite sure how to get help or where to ask your question?

Use this thread to ask any question about anything related to the Opera desktop browser on Windows, Linux/FreeBSD or Mac.

Any question about the Opera browser goes, no matter how basic. The only thing we ask of you is that you post a question, not wishes, requests or opinions.

For those answering questions: Be 100% polite, all the time. No matter how basic the question might seem, it should get a proper reply.

This is a test to see how a thread like this works out. It might or might not be kept open when the results are evaluated after a while.
The Opera Ninja recommends a forum search to find answers to your questions ninja

If you can't read answers in English, please post in the forums Français, otherwise post the question in English. (Yes I can read French, but I can't write it well enough to answer the question in that language.)

Hello, I love Opera 11 and all its features. But I clicked on something and now the "tabs" above the address line are HUGE. How do I resize these back to the original size tabs?

Either drag the bottom of the thumbnail tabs up again, or disable thumbnails in tabs in Preferences, Tabs.

1) Javascript doesn't appear to work. When I go to some sites that use drop down menus, they don't work.
- http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?&&item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneOverviewByDevice&deviceType=Phones&sortOption=priceSort

When I go there and try to use the sort menus, the browser doesn't recognize it at all. I can click it and nothing with happen. If I use Chrome, it recognizes it no problem.

2) Secure websites seem to have a problem. It takes a long time to load and sometimes it will not load at all. When I was trying to signup for this site, Opera would give me an error message every time I clicked the signup page. I tried two or three different times. I had to use Chrome to signup for the site.

Any ideas? Thanks.

In Opera 11, what do you do to make homepage not speed dial open in new tab?

Use the Homepage button instead of the New tab button. Customise, appearance, buttons.

Or, Home Drag this button to the floating page bar toolbar next to the new page button. Click to go to your home page; hold to open a speed dial.

If you like it better than the New tab button, then remove the new tab button.

Yes, but you also get an email if someone replies to another question. So, its better to start a new thread in the News, Mail, and Chat forum about your email problem.

Hi, I have a question about Opera Link. I would like to know how to ensure that when I use sync it won't overwrite everything in Opera on my computer, I want it to work the other way round, so that I can have the same speed dial/bookmarks etc. on Windows and on Linux at the same time. When I used Opera Link the last time(about a year ago I guess), my speed dial/bookmarks were overwritten.

Hello from Newbie,
How do I open a topic? Is "quote" used to ask the forum? I am not sure I am asking in the right place.
My question is, when I add a bookmark, the entire list of my saved bookmarks opens up to every last file, which is too many to easily use at all. How can I close all these folders down to a manageable dozen or so?
thanks,

How do I progress a bug report I submitted a year ago?

There have been 11 new versions since I reported this bug, but no resolution or acknowledgement that it needs to be fixed.

I have sent bug reports on 3 separate occasions, but have given up since no one seems take any notice.

Hello, I'm using Opera 11.01 Build 1190 (Windows).

With Opera 9.64 launching a specific search engine directly works fine with this code (standard_menu.ini):

Item, "Google" = Focus page & Copy & new page & Focus search field & Paste & Search, 0

It seems that the syntax for the Search command has changed or is no longer valid.

Opera 11.01 doesn't start the search -
only the dropdown menu is shown and I must select the search engine with a mouse click.

I know that I could use other solutions to solve the problem (e.g. open the specific search url) but using the "Search, 0" Syntax seems easier to me, because I configured a lot of menu entries this way.

Could you please help me?

I am trying to figure out how to get a language translation. I am an English speaker. I found a couple of recipes for bread that were display in German on the website. In FF I can get a Google Translate of these pages from German to English. Does Opera have that ability? I have found a lot of things that I would like to read what they are saying and other than doing some guesswork in a couple of languages I have an idea what the words are (the Romance languages like Spanish, Italian, Portugese, French) I am lost in the other languages. As I say FF and Chrome I can do this but I am trying to migrate to Opera because I like a lot of the things Opera brings to the browser table. I would hope I can have the same facility in Opera.

Thanks.

Hello, I am new to Opera and I am using 11.10 Beta Build 2048 on Win 7 Home Premium (x64). I would like to use Opera as my default browser, its currently firefox, but I can't figure out how to do it.When I open Opera it asks if I want to set it as default browser but checking yes doesn't work .When I go to Preferences-Advance-Programs the "Set Opera as default browser" checkbox is checked but when I click on details nothing happens. When I try to set it in the Win 7 default programs list Opera isn't listed and when I try to associate file extensions with it there is no option to use Opera.I tried both the SetBrowser and SwitchBrowser apps mentioned in another thread but neither work.I searched the forum and couldn't find anthing on point. I'm new here so I'm sorry if I missed something, any help anyone could give me with this would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The checkbox is for Opera to check if it is default, it does this check when restarted ... which gives you the other dialog you mentioned sad

Yes, I'm sorry if the question wasn't clear, whether that box is checked or unchecked I still can't make Opera the default browser.Checking that box means that that dialogue appears every time I open Opera, asking if I want to make it my default browser. But clicking on yes doesn't make it the default browser.I can uncheck the box so the dialogue doesn't keep appearing but that doesn't tell me how to make Opera the default.Clicking on the details button is supposed to open a config. window, as I understand it, but that doesn't happen. There is no obvious way to associate file types with Opera.Could this be an issue with the beta ?

Problem solved, but it wasn't obvious and I had to uninstall and re-install. When you install Opera an installation window comes up with buttons for "accept and install" and "options". If you click on options there is a window that appears with an option to set Opera as default browser. You have to set it as default before its actually installed by checking that box, then click "accept and install".Would be helpful if that was mentioned somewhere, took a while to figure it out by trial and error.

On a release version (as in, not a beta) that box is checked by default, they don't normally want "unstable" versions set as default ...

New to Opera and I'm sure I had this working how I wanted earlier but...
I have bookmark folders on the bookmarks toolbar and I click on one and get a list of bookmarks. Now I want to right click a bookmark here and get a menu allowing me to choose 'open in new tab', 'open in this tab', 'open in background tab' etc.
But when I left click or right click it always opens in a new tab.

I have searched the forums but not found what I want (not interested in middle click). Essentially I want a right click here to be the same as a right click on a link in a web page.

Thanks

This probably means that you are using User JS: http://www.opera.com/docs/userjs/

You'll have to remove scripts to remove the message.

If there is something Opera doesn't support there isn't much that can be done. It is possible that there may be workarounds, of course.

I posted this about three weeks ago. I am still having the same problem. I also just noticed that I cannot click the "quotes" button the forums here to add the quote tags.

I also was trying to visit this web site: http://www.trulia.com/property/photos/3046985156-192-Santa-Rosa-Ave-Sausalito-CA-94965

When I try to check the photos, it will not load the additional images when I try to click the arrow links. It seems to be a problem with javascript or something similar (not sure..) -- If I open the same pages, the real estate and verizon in google chrome, they load fine, so it has to be some setting on the Opera browser.

Thanks guys.

Hi Opera Dev,

I am fairly new to using the Opera browser. So far, so good. I am coming from Chrome, just to be honest. My question is one I posed in another forum with no response as of yet, so I will try here. I signed up for My Opera and have my blog page. I have made a few posts so far and do not see any of them show up in the New Posts section of the Opera Community Blog page. What is the criteria for your posts showing up in the Opera Community area, either featured, new or any other type? Is it reviewed by the Opera team in charge of that area and their favorites go up, is it random, or is it cycled in and out based on time of post? In trying to figure this out I notice that none of my posts show in my latest activity page either but my tweets and Facebook entries do. Thanks for you time.

I have Opera installed as default browser in my Laptop (W7 64bit SP1), but I'm trying to install to a USB (portable install)

How can I overcome that?

The installer has that option grayed out, can't change it, don't know why (I'm trying with the snapshots), should I try a stable version?.
Thank you, must be something else. I have disabled the UAC also.

EDIT (UPDATE): I got it working by changing the install folder to a folder on the local HD, then the install for was selectable, then I changed to the USB folder and kept installing. The problem was that when I selected the USB folder right away the install for kept greyed out. Another thing I found out is that when you try installing, (since I have a version already installed on the HD) it said "Accept and Upgrade", if you click on the license agreement and then click back it changes to "Accept and Install".
Thanks for your help and Mint's help in solving it.

Hi All,

Been looking at a few browsers - Opera is getting close to being my No 1 now.

I have one question that I would dearly like a positive answer to - I have not been able to find a setting that might do it for me.

I want to display the Bookmarks in the way that Windows does it with Program, i.e Start > Programs, column row format. That way you don't have to scroll or move around to get to see all your bookmarks.

My current browser is Maxthon Vs 2.x which seems so far the only browser to be able to do that.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers,

Phil.

Showing cascading bookmarks is not available as far as I know. It was once used in an earlier version (maybe 8.54 or 9.64). I didn't recall many users asking for the behaviour to be returned. I find the best way to access bookmarks is with the keyboard. I have a shortcut:

b Alt = Show popup menu, "Browser Bookmarks Menu"

I think it would be much more efficient for you to type part of the bookmark address in the URL field.

For example, to access the Desktop Team Blog, I would type "desk", press the down arrow, then Enter.

Thanks for the feedback Pesala.

Unfortunately, I often forget under which folder or name I have stored a URL under, so typing in part of a URL just doesn't work.
Seems a shame that cascading bookmarks is not available then. I would have thought that it's the most comprehensive way to present them. You see all your bookmarks/folders at once. I find the ..more.. selection currently used in Opera almost as bad as the IE style of scrolling up or down.

If there is something I can do to add this to the wish list of features, please let me know.

That's just the point — you don't need to remember the bookmark folder you stored it in, nor even the whole URL. Just typing any part of the URL in the address field will soon narrow down the list of results. I am sure it is quicker than visually searching the entire list of bookmarks. Desktop Wish-list

Thanks again for your reply.

Tried the search method of typing in any part of what one may remember of the web site in the URL bar, but have to say it's far from a acceptable procedure/result for me.

Regardless, the cascading presentation of bookmarks could surely be still an an option as opposed to the current way. I can't for the life of me see what objections anyone would to having it this way.

I'll post my suggestion in the wish list Topic. Btw, Vs 8.54 still has the ..more..way of bookmark presenation and I couldn't find the 9.64 Vs.

Hi,

I wanted to use Opera for my Bittorrent but I accidentally selected save instead of open and then clicked the "don't ask me again" button. I went into Preferences, Downloads and torrent but I cannot change it to make Opera it's main download torrent. Also, I use to be able to move through each opened tab with 1 and 2 keys instead of Ctrl+Tab keys. Now this is disabled Is there a way to restore that feature? I'm using XP.

Hey all, have a problem and I'm unsure as to how to fix it. Been a long time user of Opera and I love it and this problem is a recent one that is really, at worst, mildly annoying but I thought I would give it a shot and see if I could get any help. My title bar seems to have mysteriously disappeared, it seems to only affect my opera browser window as I can open up folders and other things and the title bar is still there. I run Windows 7 64 bit and I do have windowsblind for some snazzy looks.

Here is a picture of the window: [img]http://i51.tinypic.com/14295za.jpg

Delete operaprefs.ini in your profile folder is the quickest way to resolve many problems. You will lose any preferences you have changed since installing Opera.

Hi guys!

First of all thanks for finally implementing gradients at least partially! Looking forward to see radial gradients!
What's the difference between -o-repeating-linear-gradient() and -o-linear-gradient()?

And another question: is there actually some documentation site where I can read the specs for CSS and JavaScript API that are implemented by Opera's engine? Something similar to Mozilla Developers Network? Because quite often I experience difficulties in:
A) figuring out if a particular feature is supported by Opera and if yes, which in versions?
B) figuring out the syntax for using some features. For example the syntax for -o-linear-gradient slightly differs from -moz-linear-gradient so I had no way of determining it except for trial and error.

Thank you.

I do have a problem on opera find in page / search a keyword on the page.
like firefox when you press ctrl f the find bar will appear and whenever you go to another tab it stays there and the keyword that you are search will not disappear, the problem with opera is that "find" wont appear when i switch to another tab which in my case its not cool and hustle. I wanted to have an option if you want the "find" stays whenever i switch to other tabs.

man! thats the only thing that i want for opera browser to have !!!

Opera remembers a different keyword for each tab. If you haven't entered one yet for that tab, the Find toolbar is blank. If you want to find the same term on the next tab, press F3 for find next, (and Shift F3 for find previous). You can also use shortcuts / or . (inline find, 1) to find in page without the toolbar being displayed permanently, or > and , to search only in links. (inline find, 2)
