New to Opera, and not sure where to go? Ask any question here!

Are you new to Opera, and not quite sure how to get help or where to ask your question?

Use this thread to ask any question about anything related to the Opera desktop browser on Windows, Linux/FreeBSD or Mac.

Any question about the Opera browser goes, no matter how basic. The only thing we ask of you is that you post a question, not wishes, requests or opinions.

For those answering questions: Be 100% polite, all the time. No matter how basic the question might seem, it should get a proper reply.

This is a test to see how a thread like this works out. It might or might not be kept open when the results are evaluated after a while.

No, its not possible. It has been requested several times on the wish-list.

The need for this may be solved by increasing your minimum font size in Preferences, Fonts. try 12 pixels instead of the default 8 pixels.

And changing that seems to have fixed it, thanks Pesala. I'll check the wish-list as well next time I run into something like this.

Does this start happening after running Opera for many hours? Or can it happen just after starting Opera?

It usually happens pretty quickly after starting Opera, but it can also happen after a few hours.

Originally posted by haavard:

No. I don't usually browse with more than two tabs open, and it can happen even if I only have the one. (In fact, it's done it several times already, including not wanting to launch tonight.) For that matter, when I tried to take Saskatchewan's advice, it took seven clicks before the Menu opened. (I wasn't going fast, not double-clicking or anything. My poor mouse might have taken it a bit hard, though.)

Originally posted by haavard:

When the link doesn't "take", is the rest of the user interface responding, or is it that the whole browser is frozen?

That's a really good question, and I'm afraid I don't know. I have tried to do other things, like scrolling down the page, when the links are acting up. Sometimes It'll scroll fine, and sometimes it won't. And here's what's *really* weird: sometimes it'll let me use the scroller on my mouse, and sometimes the only way it'll let me scroll is to click the down arrow. And sometimes the only way it'll let me scroll is by manipulating the scroll bar! It's a toss up which method will work, and whether or not it's the only method that'll work. So... I can't really give you a good answer. sad

Typing the URL into the little URL box also has this problem. Again, it's not consistent, but it's worse than clicking links. (More than once or twice, I've had to resort to googling the URL I want.)

So the whole user interface freezes every now and then?
Again, I can't answer well. Usually it *will* let me scroll, one way or another. And the auto search seems to be OK most of the time (not always).

I'm on a Eee PC Netbook - She's a year or so old. Not sure how much RAM I've got but if need be I'll figure it out somehow.

Opera doesn't display message board?

I have never had troubles with Opera (even when it was a $25 dollar browser) until now and I have no clue on how to fix it.

When I view http://btherunboarddirectory.runboard.com/t13365 under any other browser I get this (reduced in size to avoid breaking things here):

The exact same site in Opera looks like this:

As you can see, almost no content is shown which makes using Opera for this site impossible!

I have sent reports on this for months yet have never heard back from Opera... Can anyone here help me?

Hi, I'm a Firefox user, but I got astonished by Opera! Some things I got used to in Firefox's great customizability are the following, about tabs, which I'd like to know how to do inside Opera:
 • Open links from address bar in new tabs;
 • When opening new tabs from anywhere (links, even from the same website, address bar, bookmarks) do it in background tabs;
 • Double click on tab to close it.

About the second thing I found this post: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=726322
...but I wish I could open all new tabs in the background by default, without the need to hold Ctrl, Shift or whatsoever...

But then you would have to hold shift, ctrl, or whatever to open them in the foreground. wink

Try a mouse gesture — it doesn't require you to touch the keyboard:

GestureDown = Open link in background page | New page

Hold the right mouse button and drag down. Over a link it will open it in the background; elsewhere it will open a new tab. Or replace the "New Page" command with "Reload" or something else as you prefer.

Where can I download the Russian opera setup?

What is that? I am in France, my OS is French, I use my favorite Firefox in English. I never change my Firefox to Opera, because I have Opera mini on my phone, and I am very unhappy because every page acces is "Server Error" in Opera Mini.... hate it, but is better howeer that the phone native browser.

So, I need an Russian opera setup, but I never arrive to download it, i didn't find any option to select the download language.

Maybe Opera is not available in other that English language?

Good Morning to all Opera people from a Newbie to this community. As this is very first post here please feel free to correct me/redirect me:

Specific queries prior to upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7

(My Vista is all up to date: My ‘created data’ has been collected-up and copied to an external Hard Drive and I have a USB Memory, too:, I am nearly ready….)

Re: My Opera 10.63

Q O1. Will I have to download/re-install my Opera browser after upgrading to W7, or is it retained as a whole entity?

Q O2. Bookmarks, Passwords, Preferences (such as Speed-dial settings) Will these each be retained somewhere, or are they all written over/written off during the upgrade processes to W7?

Q O3. If the above are all written over/off then how can I safely ‘park’ that information before the upgrade and then restore all of it in my Opera Browser after W7 is up & running?

Q O4. If there is a facility to ‘park’ that information is it such that I can then I also place it in a folder for copying onto a memory stick then transferring it to yet another PC running Opera 10.63 which will by then have already been upgraded to W7, too?

Finally, I must confess that over several years I have used various versions of OPERA merely as a gateway to the internet.
Having recently paused to explore it’s many features it is only now that I realise how overwhelmingly impressive this ‘Browser’ has become –

So a huge deluge of gratitude from me to all those at/of OPERA who are busily making it so!!

Try enabling Opera Turbo from the Status Bar icon or from Preferences, Web Pages, Opera Turbo, and see if that helps your bandwidth usage. Images are shown as very low quality, highly compressed JPG. Right-click on an image to view it at its native quality.

Go to Preferences again, General tab.
At Startup, just above Home page, make sure you have "Open with Home page" selected; that is, of course, if you need pages from last time browsing opened. In that case, select "Continue from last time".

Buried Firefox.

Hey,

installed Opera 11 about a week ago, and I'm really impressed. Hopefully further addons will come soon so I can bury Firefox. My questions:

a) Is it possible to restore a recently closed tab by middle clicking the tab bar (instead of opening a new tab)?
b) Is it possible to open the links shown when holding left mouse button on forward/back button (i.e. show chronological structure) in a new tab? Middle click doesn't work.
c) When visiting https://addons.labs.opera.com/addons/extensions/ (through Menu > Extensions > Get Extensions, or entering the URL), doing some stuff there, closing it, and entering 'extensions' into the address bar, the Extension-site doesn't show up - why is that? I think this has happened for other sites as well.

Could not save file.

C:\Documents and Settings\Work\Application Data\Opera\Opera\bookmarks.adr

Try again?

This error continually pops up and Opera is not loading pages correctly. It seems to happen on pages with flash content, but I cannot be certain that is the issue. I am running WinXP Pro SP2. How can I resolve this please?

Thank you in advance

If everything is in the same location, you shouldn't have to do anything. If you are using the same username in Windows 7 as in Vista, things should work without any further actions on your part.

I don't think there's anything you can do, but if you report the crash through the dialog that pops up, the crash can be analyzed by our developers.

That basically depends on the site. There's no easy general answer to Flash not working somewhere. One would need to look at the specific site to see if there are any obvious workarounds or fixes.

Opera unite streaming media question..
Boy, I hope I'm doing this right....
Running xp; everything works, albeit slowly sometimes. Friend unable to see or use streaming media when I provide link. I don't see any instructions that makes it any easier and I just intuiting my way through is getting me nowhere. Found a post on Streaming media but it did not touch on the basics on getting up and running....An instruction blurb...perhaps?

Hi, I already made a topic but, not too sure I placed it in the right place.
Anywys I'm ZWhim and I'm having trouble with Opera.
Okay there was a time when I could play a game and if there was text on it or in like a drop-out box it would show.
But, for some odd reason it doesn't show anymore.
Like this for instance:

[img]http://i52.tinypic.com/2uszo1k.jpg

See where the red oval is?
Well there is suppose to be text in its place.
It was the same when I had to find the url for this picture, the text in boxes aren't there.
If there is anyone that can help I'd greatly appreciate it smile

You should install Opera 11 Beta in its own folder. You don't need to uninstall 10.63, and you should not until you're entirely happy that Opera 11.0 final is released and working to your satisfaction.

Update, still no response to my crash report or to this problem we are discussing from the Opera side (which is not how I remember reports and responses from my formal Opera beta-testing days). Still, I have determined the problem is somehow related to unconventional CSS coding (read this as MS/IE specific CSS code hacks and/or CSS 3.0 codes not yet supported by Opera). The error handling Opera is using to deal with these almost appears to cascade down and affect the next valid CSS 2.01 coding statement in very strange ways.

Partial success can be achieved by switching the view from the author mode to the user mode, clearing all caches, then switching back to author mode but the special English characters are rendered incorrectly in English (en) language setting. For example: ● is rendered as â— which is very annoying (to say the least).

I posted in the main forum, Sorry did not see this thread. It appears my post is gone.

I know how to edit the menu. I simply can not figure out the Line I need to add the the Documents Pop-up section to open another browser.

I run windows 7 64 bit. I am trying to add "Open page in chrome" I also am having a time getting another program to open using the right click. This is the program I want to open.

http://magnifier.sourceforge.net/

I am guessing you have to put in the line C:\Program Files (x86).

Also, When I go to a website that I need to use my username and password, Opera remembers it fine, I just have to hit the "magic wand" button to fill it in. Maybe thats normal, I thought opera went ahead and filled it in for you with out having to use the magic wand button. I could be wrong. Been along time. Can I make opera fill in the username and password without having to use the magic wand button?

Does somebody know what "Maximum length of visited time string" is about?
Opera forgets a "visited" state of links after a while. In Options\Advanced\History\Addresses value is "10000", but I suppose there is another limit/option (like one, my question is about) for links highlighting. This highlighting is quite useful for me - I use it for some old-school forum, which represented by a tree with links to posts, so by a highlighting I can understand if I saw a message or not. I can't believe that I could open 10000 pages faster than in a month.

I take it to be the number of days that a link changes colour after it has been visited. After 32 days (the default) it will change back to the usual colour for unvisited links.

Change it in Opera Config

What does the PAUSE key do in Opera for Windows and how can I disable it?

I have PAUSE set as a global hotkey in my music player (foobar2000), and anytime Opera has focus, PAUSE no longer stops/starts the music. The multimedia PLAY/PAUSE key works fine when Opera has focus, but my office keyboard doesn't have multimedia keys.

Thanks!

EDIT: I'm now noticing that Opera kills global hotkeys in other programs when it has focus, even though it doesn't use them for anything itself. Is there some way to make this behavior stop?
