tab-stacking disable option! please!

hello opera

please, make an option to disable the tab-stacking feature! for an heavy opera-tabs user with 50 tabs opened, its impossile and frustrating to reorganize the tabs with a pointing device.

i thougt to switch to an older opera version, but thats impossible, then i need the new extensions-feature and older beta versions are to risky because the data loss.

i never post in forums, but that tab-stacking frustrates me every day, that i must come to that forum and post my appeal.

thank you
you've created a genious software, that i use all days several hours

I can totally relate to the 50 tabs, except...that's precisely the reason I love tab grouping! When all tabs shrink to tininess, I cannot distinguish them anymore, but now I can group for example Wikipedia, work-related, posts from the same blog...and the tab area grows larger; plus it's easier to find the tab I'm looking for.

Also, if you have so many tabs, maybe some can be bookmarked for later reading (sites like Youtube have their own bookmarking/"watch later" option), some put into speed dial if it's a once-per-day thing, some simply closed when you start thinking if you really need to read that particular page or not.

Can you find any way to group your tabs by website/category? Maybe you'll even start to like the feature smile

I believe that tab stacking will see great improvements over time: it just appeared, it's awesome, but you still can't say it's perfect. Even now you can use it to minimize the clutter. Alternatively, you can group tabs in separate windows.
By the way, you can use build 1085 - it still didn't have tab stacking, but it had extensions. Don't speak of data loss - I only experienced occasional crashes (after which all tabs could be restored) - and it was okay for me.

You can build a bunch of stacks, save as a session. Try stacks with tab bar set to wrap to multi lines, save as session.

A modifier key for don't stack would be better. Its hard enough to stack tabs as it is. The area where tabs do stack is smaller than the area where they do not.

esp in case of pinned tab which are very narrow... most of the time I try to reorganize them I and up stacking them (and I don't use that feature - it's hardly useful on 24", not to mention in vertical tab orientation too...)

+1, I personally would like to have automated tab stacking (toggle-able, everything that comes from the current tab comes in the same stack so you can essentially switch between different work areas as easily as extending and collapsing stacks) but not by drag&dropping tabs on each other.

Plus freakin' one. I like this idea. This should have it own thread. This will make tab stacking actually useful for me.

Yes definitely, please make this Tab-stacking feature optional, it's almost impossible to sort the tabs the way we want...doh
Thanks!

Have you ever tried menagining tab with and without this feature? Small tip - with this feature (which cannot be turned off) chances of unwanted and accidental stacking are great (and any such probability greater than 0 in this case is IMHO unacceptable...).

Did you read the post?

Quote: "I personally don't like tabs"

He doesn't like tabs! Which means that he doesn't use them. So how does this affect him at all? And if he does use them, why does he claim that he doesn't like them, and how is it relevant in this thread?

That's the point.

Its not hard at all. Tab stacking is a new feature, and there wasn't enough time to implement an option to disable it yet. I hope that the feature will be improved in the next version, as it has potential to be a useful substitute for using sessions, or opening another window.

It needs some time to settle in and be used by a large number of users before knowing how people use it, and the best way to improve it.

In earlier versions of Opera I can easily and quickly change tab positions without having to make sure that I am not stacking them. With the current version, it is very easy to make the mistake of stacking them, as you can't just move the tab to the right or left like you used to, but you must also make sure that the tab animation switched first. More time will be added if you do make the mistake of stacking the tabs, as you have to 'unstack' them again. This makes the whole thing slower and annoying (something which could be previously done in less than a second).

It might be a cool feature for some, but there is no reason to force this on users that don't like it.

Guys...please tell me that someone's working on including a "disable tab stacking" option in a future release. I'm slowly running out of patience.

this stuff here would be nice too, would probably help with the issues OP is having with stacking.

How about, holding Shift while dragging tab enables stacking, while just dragging only repositions the tab on the tab bar?

I really need this option. I have pinned tabs that I like to keep organized and it drives me insane when I accidentally stack them. It's even worse when I try to tear them apart, because it's nearly impossible. Many times I just forgo my session and restart opera. Please fix this.

I don't find it difficult — just drag the tab out of the stack.

Right click, Tab stack, unstack to break apart a tab group.

I sincerely hope you don't know what you are talking about, because you're implying that opera asa has no UAT (user acceptance testing) nor QA (quality assurance), in other words that they rush unfinished features into their releases and treat their user base as a herd of beta-testers. I don't think opera asa are such amateurs, and if they really are doing this, then they sould consider swictching to a model like git-flow.

The way you put it is also wrong because it only accounts for people who want to use it and totally dismiss those who do not, telling part of your user base they're not considered is usually not a smart idea.

As a member of the latter group, this tab stacking feature gets in my way and breaks my work flow too often: I'm a heavy tab user with 40+ tabs open at one time, and too often I have had tabs ending up stacked when I just want to click on it to give it focus, then struggling to unstack it.
This fiddling and struggling with tabs is not welcomed in my work flow, it gets annoying and frustrating real quick, to the point that after being a user and fervent supporter of opera for 10 years, I'm seriously considering switching to another browser and I now tell people not to switch to opera anymore because it is not consistent, breaks expected behavior and forces those changes upon the users. I don't like the kind of software that strips freedom from its users.

Obviously just the kind of user who needs to use tab stacks. I typically use five tabs, and the only reason I stack tabs is to stop my pinned mail tabs from shrinking.

I'm a normal Tab User with between 10 to 20 tabs max.
But the tab stacking feature is annoying me. Every time i want to move a tab or just click one for a microsecond to long, two neighboring tabs are stacked.
I don't use tab stacking and so i want do disable it until i need it.
As it is its just annoying me, nothing else.

Please implement an opt-out feature so i can disable it. It would be no harm if the option would be at least in about:config.

Sorry for the excessive quoting, but I totally agree with FloPe, so I quote his text instead of writing my own.
I need the ability to disable stacking.
P.S. Just a note - I'm using Opera since version 4 or something.

+1. I have used Opera for a long time for it's versatility and its features, as well as it's 'plug'n'play' abilities. Taking away versability and adding extensions to fix everything that's wrong with Opera makes me think I should just use Firefox since it's extension market is lightyears head of Opera's.

Add more versatility into the base Opera like it always had before

16.12.2010 - Opera 11.00
28.06.2011 - Opera 11.50

Well, it has been long enough to fix this — six months should have been long enough to fix it for 11.50, but AFAIK there's still no option to disable it in Opera Next and no option not to shrink pinned tabs either.

Though some users think tab-stacking is great, there's clearly enough who want to disable it, and others who want it improved, to make this a higher priority than it apparently is.

It is not difficult to avoid stacking tabs, even if the tab bar is full of small tabs, but if tab wrapping is on, the feature is broken and there is no way to avoid stacking. The Windows panel helps a little, but that also has its limitations.

An on/off switch for stacking and pinned tab shrinking is not much to ask after over eight or nine months (people were asking for this before 11.00 was even released).

I hate tab stacking. I have a very wide screen and it is difficult to drag tabs horizontally without dropping them onto a stack. I don't use grouped tabs anywhere cause I like to see what I have open.

I now have to slow down my mouse work to 40%.

Please give me an option to disable this crap for me.
