Opera 11 wont install
Whenever i try to install it goes through the whole install then right at the end comes up with error message sayingFailed to modify registry Software\Classes\.xht\OpenWithProgIDs\Opera.HTML. Error code: 39
it then opens opera but when i close the browser and try to reopen again my pc says its not installed and is nowhere to be found on my hard drive.
Anyway to fix this? I get this message every time
I am running Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit
oops! foremost, antivirus programs like mcAfee installed on maximum protection ignores certain execution commands. any way, run a system maintanance plan, download the .exe file with specifying os details, uninstall the previous version, install your new version. careful with registry clean maintanance programmes. your registry might be corrupt too...just restore the previous status of your os whence functioning well.

Did you follow the whole procedure.
did you `save' not run the instalation.
did you use the registry cleaner.
but you need to follow the whole procedure! as outlined in my previous link.
as well as Eusing, use this:

I have the same problem with 11.01. I have tried various ways to edit the registry key manually, with no luck. I cant install either 11.01, 11 or 10.63 now. This problem occured because of the upgrade. How can it be fixed?
Edit: Seems like I fixed it. For me it was HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Opera.HTML that caused the error. However I was able to delete the entire folder (Opera.HTML) with Registrar Registry Manager Lite. Then I ran the installer and everything works fine, and i have my original settings. I downloaded it for free here: http://www.resplendence.com/downloads

I have suggested the method above countless times now and it seems to work for most people, there is a couple of threads that go into manual registry editing, etc. you might have to search the forums for them.
As regards `I get Error Code 72.'

There is no "Opera.html" file in the registry. I have, I believe removed all vestiges of Opera from my computer. I followed the advice above and in another post and deleted the .gif and .bmp registry entry and now I get another error when I try to install:
Failed to modify registry Software\Classes\.gif\OpenWithProgIDs\Opera.Image. Error code: 39
This is very frustrating. I enjoyed using Opera but if its going to be this much trouble I don't think I will use it. Any other suggestions?

Try this. Paste the following into notepad, save as classes.reg, then double click it.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif\OpenWithProgids] "Opera.Image"=hex(0): [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xht] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xht\OpenWithProgIDs] "Opera.HTML"=hex(0): [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xhtml] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xhtml\OpenWithProgIDs] "Opera.HTML"=hex(0):
I have a similar problem
I run Windows home SP3 on a PC and Opera 10.63 works fine but when I try to install 11.0 or 11.01 the install fails with this error report:
Failed to load the unicode compatibility layer OUniAnsi.DLL because the
specific module could not be found
I then have to manually remove opera and then download 10.63 to get a working version
When I have 10.63 running the file OUniAnsi.DLL is in the program files/opera directory
Support have told me that XP does not need this file but when I rename it and try to run 10.63 I see the same error message as above when I try to install 11.0 and 11.01, they suggested this was malware but obviously it is an Opera file and is required for 10.63.
Anybody have any ideas ?
Thanks Len

I have a similar problem, but with a twist. Opera isn't even giving me the courtesy of providing an error message. It simply quietly and conscientiously removes the old version and then exits, as though that were the whole point of the Opera 11.01 installer.
It doesn't appear to be in conflict with my anti-virus, from what I can see. Disabling it to install has no effect. To answer the other suggestion, theoretically, my running CCleaner after uninstalling Opera should mean I don't have to go in and do a manual registry edit to remove the remnants of Opera (It's been my experience that, in general, bad things happen when I edit the registry by hand. I really don't want to do it outside of an emergency.). Beyond which, sans error message, I'm not necessarily convinced the error is a result of a problem in the registry. More importantly, Opera 10.60, for which I happen to have an old executable, installs without a hickup and runs... it's just that Opera reminds me to update to the newer, shinier, non-working version whenever I shut it.
What I find strangest is that it actually SUCCEEDED in updating to Opera 11.01 at one point. And I ran the new version of Opera, and thought the new tab-stacking feature was pretty cool, to boot. But the moment I closed Opera, it was gone forever. Icon disappeared, executable wasn't in program files. Although it still had all the files pertaining to favorites and extensions, for all the good it does me.
I plan to check out, as soon as I find one (probably on cnet), whether it behaves better when updating from a more recent version of Opera. If I have better luck, I'll report back.

Well, I didn't find a direct fix, but I did find a workaround. A version of Opera 11.01 is available for portableapps. I've tested it and it does, in fact, save skins and plugins, so until there's an official fix for the problem, you can put a portableapps install in a folder on your hard drive and open Opera from it.
Having problems installing O11 for WIN7 32bit... Just stumbled upon selecting for current user and not all users. Now it installs with no problem.
I'm rolling with Win7 64 bit, but I'm sitting in the same boat as Aclarion.
To be fair, apart from tab stacking and some cleanup on mouse gestures it's not the like the differences between 10.63 and 11 aren't really all that noticeable. Worst case scenario, if you can't install the PortableApps version, there are worse things than waiting for the next Opera update. The Opera team has been pretty good about incremental updates. JMO, though.

On one of my machines, (Win XP 32 bits on an Athlon 64X2 processor) I solved the issue by reinstalling the windows installer, which seemed to have diseappeared from the machine somehow. Some of the Microsoft updates were also not installing properly, so I had to download a runtime version of the installer, since the installer itself could not be installed (...).

Duncan, thanks for trying to help but your advice does not help. You have posted the link several times to fix the apparent issue but it just does not work. Deleting the Opera.html, at least in my case, has not solved the problem. 11.01 will not install. 10.63 works fine. When I try to install 11.01 I get a myriad of errors. I have followed all the above advice, deleted Opera.html, the .bmp file etc... all to no avail. I am giving up on Opera 11.01 and will wait until a new version comes out. Opera 10.63 is fine for now. I just can't make it my default browser until all the quirks are fixed.
OK, I just couldn't relax until I figured it out. I got 11.01 to work, finally!!!!
Whenever the error popped up that some "H_Key..Loca \Software\classes\.jpeg (.gif) (.bmp) (torrent) file would not allow the installer to run, I went to the registry and deleted that particular file. After about 5 error messages and deletions, 11.01 installed.
It is now up and running fine, so far.

glad you got it up too. So it was a registry error then.. Thats why it's a good idea to do the whole un-install/re-install bit.
But registry repair wont delete something that is still operating on the system..

I have had variant of these install problems for some time. (I finally reluctantly switched to Minefield, a 64-bit Firefox clone) for everyday use. I have Opera portable as a back-up. I do have some thoughts. 1) If you haven't had this problem, stop saying all we need to do is clean the registry. As is obvious, many many people have had this problem, cleaned the registry using every tool out there and still had the problem. 2) I do think its a registry problem but its not as simple as a good clean. 3) WE didn't create this problem. It seems obvious that the Opera installer has some sort of conflict with the OS that results in this registry issue. 4) Thus, I think we need Opera to take responsibility for the problem and fix the installer. 5) I have always been an Opera fanatic. And MAYBE I'm willing to spends hours, days and weeks fixing this problem. But think about the many people TRYING OUT Opera, have this problem and never try again. A browser should not require tons of registry tweaking to work. 6) I think it is very dangerous advice to encourage people to start manually deleting registry entries. I have certainly done that but it is a very risky activity. In summary, I think we need Opera to man-up and fix this problem instead of expecting people to use the forums to start shooting rounds wildly into the registry.
Well the biggest headache I had for a long time was installing a out-of-the-box version of nero-7.
That mangled up heaps of stuff and took some considerable manual registry tweaking to finally get rid of it.
I also installed a firefox beta recently, spent ages getting bookmarks and other stuff in place, ran a cleaner and it had nothing in it afterwards.
I quickly removed that app.
I could mention a few more programs that caused trouble, It happens when installing new software.
The thing is after installing about 10 versions of opera over the last year, no installation problems, yet.

am adding my comment even though you may have fixed it. sorry for extra blather.. maybe it wil assist someone somday.
I had a trojan that set most if not all my folders to 'off' thus no program but a few , theirs,, coul mod my folddrs and compuoter to

that problem was fixed when I set permissions..
but I jsut mention i a bit here and thats all. hope you truly got it fixed.

Have you ever had a trojan / virus in the past year or two? yeah most ppl have but there was a time I didn't for
over 12 years.
Long story short.. sometimes a virus or trojan (especially trojan) will disable your machine's ability to modify directories saying they don't exists.. thus any installation fails because it's encountering a
'doesn't exists' folder.
The only way, that I know to fix it, is to modify all folders so they're set up to accept you (I hope it's only you who uses your computer)..as that makes it simple.
The mod is hard to do. Maybe someone, here, can help to verify the problem and to fix it.
I suspect a trojan modded directories to make them readable only by
'system' or only systems running their trojan-virus it works that way .. then someone could help by doing 2 things
1. verify that folders aren't accessible when they should be.
2. help this user to set all folders accessible if he / she is the sole user of
Then it's a no-brainer. If you're not the only user.. it's difficult and well someone here may have the right answer(s) for this
situation.
I hope you're able to get this working.
And it, probably, should affect many uploads unless it affect only browser.
If yes then . that makes little sense. If no .. then it makes perfect sense that many programs would be affected.
Be well and good luck.

For any others who come along, I would suggest trying a fresh Opera installation in a new folder (e.g., C:\Program Files\Opera11_01(1190)\) instead of the traditional C:\Program Files\Opera\ folder. I might be wrong, but AFAIK any potential registry conflicts with previous installations are completely side-stepped this way, and one can quickly find out if the installation problems go away.
If they do, then it seems clear that something in the old installation is causing the problem. At that point one can just proceed with the new installation and decide if it is worth the extra work to manually backup old bookmarks/settings and transfer to the new installation (or to clean out all vestiges of old installations and re-install in the traditional C:\Program Files\Opera\ folder).
(You can have several co-existing Opera installations on your machine, and can even run different versions simultaneously, as long as each is installed to a separate folder.)
