Auto-Tab Stacking Feature

I would like if we could enable a feature that automatically stacks tabs if they have the domain in common or when opening links from search results or a news blog. Like when you open a bunch of Google or Youtube results and they become stacked automatically. Similar to how the Windows 7 taskbar works, when you open the same program, it gets grouped with the original windows/program.

It would make tab stacking much easier and efficient, especially if you open up multiple links at the same time from search results or from a news blog and don't want the Tab Bar to be cluttered.

So basically 2 options added in to the tab options and aren't enabled by default.
1. Automatically tab stack with the same domain/site.
2. Automatically tab stack when creating a new tab from another tab
(2 would be similar to how IE8/9 'grouping' tabs work)

I love the tab stacking feature, but I close them much too often to be bothered to stack them on my own. This way, they would be stacked automatically for my convenience.

I hope I suggested this in a clear way, I'm not the best at explaining things sometimes. wink

+1, but everything should be with enough possibility for fine tuning (needless to say that the optionality of the feature is mandatory), otherwise some users may be offended.

Right now I don't even use tab-stacking , it's time consuming . The 2 options for auto-stacking you listed would be awesome .

#2 is like Color Coded Internet Explorer tabs where if you open a tab off from another tab they have the same color

and this should not be an integrated Opera feature that way there's no reason NOT to add this feature smile

Agree - but I want ability to NAME the stacks so I know what they relate to - e.g. News, Banking, Opera, Linux, etc.

+1 I came here to suggest this as well. I was thinking that any tabs that are opened from a link (by right-clicking, Open in a New Tab, or SHIFT-CLICK/CTRL-SHIFT-CLICK) would be stacked together with the current window. Then if you want to create a new stack, you would have another option, "Open in a New Tab Stack" or you could just do CTRL-T (or press the Plus symbol) to create a new Stack.

I have no interest in tab stacking. There had better be a way to turn that off if it is implemented.

Tab stacking is already implemented... And if you're talking about the tips I gave to improve it, I said you would be able to enable/disable them.

Tab stacking allows you to organize your browsing, optimize the space on your tab bar, and keep yet even more tabs handy for use.

Dragging and dropping tabs on top of one another creates stacks. Hovering a stack gives a visual overview of what's inside the stack. Expanding and collapsing stacks allows you to optimize the space on your tab bar any way you like.

I agree - I often find myself with 30 or more tabs, when I realize it would have been useful to have groups - but by then I have too many to go back and create groups. I didn't have this problem with IE8 at work last summer, so I opened IE8, and realized that in IE8, right-clicking on a tab and creating a new tab auto-groups them. That's when I realized something like this was needed.

My thought was, why not have a 'New Tab in New Group' option, in addition to plain old 'New Tab', 'Clone Tab', and 'Follower Tab'. I'd also suggest having a shortcut to make it easy to do this, Ctrl+Y seeming to make sense due to its being right next to Ctrl+T (on most AZERTY/QWERTY keyboards, at least), and not appearing to do anything by default at this time. The thinking being, I often realize when I'd doing something different (i.e. going from Wikipedia to news to e-mail checking), so a quick shortcut would be enough.

Grouping by domain by default wouldn't be bad, either. Wouldn't solve related groups across multiple domains, but would certainly be a start.

+1 for auto-tab for the same site/domain (but as optional) and I liked the IE system, would be a improve of "open new tab next of active" but keeping up this option too.

not really a solution. esp with the current "open new tab next to active" policy that does not discern between links opened from the current page and entirely new pages (eg. when pressing the [+] button in the address bar, opening a bookmark, and so on)

This was a bug? ^^ I thought it was a feature, and I liked it wink
For me, the bug was that if the tab is at the end of the stack, it doesn't work even with "open next to active tab" selected...

I really think that opening a new tab from a link should keep the new tab in the same stack, so automatic tab stacking = +1 for me either!

A command to stack tabs by domain would be a killer feature.

I would love this feature BUT only if it allowed specific domains to be chosen as a group, because i know i would end up freaking out because i ordered something from amazon.com and was searching for something else on the site in a different tab and i would end up freaking out about a "Missing tab" or if such an option would not be made available, at least make it so i ca disable it.... Like that stupid simplified address bar view... I stopped using safari because it doesn't give the full address and when your doing some web developing you want to see the entire, unsimplified, address bar.

With enough fine tuning, auto tab stacking could be flexible enough to please everyone:
  • Option to always stack in "Middle-Click Options..." [Users could still open links outside of stack by contextual menu or keyboard+click or gesture]
  • Option to stack in contextual menu [Right-clicking links]
  • Option to stack with a keyboard combination like "Ctrl+Click" on links
  • Option to only group tabs with same domain
  • Option to only enable stacking by dragging tabs, the way Opera is now
  • Option to disable stacking all together

This is a great feature for organizing tabs, and I'm looking forward to seeing how Opera hones it in the future.

It should be there and be optional. The best thing that comes to mind is on demand stacking. E.g. an action (which can be a button, a keyboard shortcut or a mouse gesture) that, when called, would stack 1): all the tabs from the domain of the current tab, or 2): all open tabs by domain. Regex matching would be much welcomed, so custom rules would be possible.

+1000, make all the awesome stacking ideas default and make it really easy to toggle stacking, as some people NEED it and others HATE it.
auto stacking would be awesome, have all my wikipedia in one stack.

when moving a stack to a new window, keep it stacked.

colour the stacks too please. the boarder (including between tabs within a stack)needs to be vivid while the text background can be a fine shade. we get the unified feel without sacrificing legibility.

I really like this idea, but there are some little problems with this idea. So what about new users who don't know about Tab Stacking? They can't find their tabs? Maybe when stacking tabs automatically, the browser automatically opens the stack?
