Opera 8.51 Buttons

Since some things have changed for Opera 8.x (skins and hidden menus), I think we need a new thread for Opera 8.51 Buttons. If you're looking for buttons for Opera 7.x, this is the old thread

This is the Opera Custom Button Maker. There are loads of custom buttons on the Wiki Site, and this is my button page which has a few more, a customized standard skin with extra icons, and explains a bit about making buttons.

Opera 8.0 buttons with hidden popup menus have two functions, just like the earlier buttons, but without the dropdown menu taking up any space on the toolbar. Just click and hold to get the menu or alternative action.

Below are some of my favourites so far:

button Click for your home page, click and hold for the browser menu.

button Updated: Click for the main menu, click and hold to manage bookmarks. (Now with Dropdown Icon)

button Print + Print Options

button Open document + closed window list

button Session list + Open Window list

button Paste clipboard contents into Irfan View + Utilities menu. This requires a [Browser Utilities menu] section in your customized menu, where you can create items for any other programs or utilities.

button Toggle zoom 100%, 120%, 150% + Show zoom menu

button Skin menu + Colour scheme menu

button Scroll down + Back to top

button Manage Bookmarks + Internal Bookmark list

button Browse your Drives

If you have any great ideas for new buttons, post them in this thread using the {Opbut=Action, parameter 1,parameter 2,"Tooltip", "Icon"}Button{/opbut} code.¹

If you need help making buttons, post your requests here. Please don't email me — though I enjoy helping people, I prefer to do it only when it suits me.

¹ Replace {curly brackets} with [square ones]. Parameters are optional, not all actions need them. Titles and icons are also optional. See the [Images] section of skin.ini for your skin to see the right name to use for the icon you wish to use.

Update: See my Opera Buttons Page with A Tutorial on Adding Icons to Skins.

I found a Quickbutton from Tomu's site and modified it to suit my needs:

QuickButton11, "Zoom"="Zoom to, 150, , , "Zoom" | Zoom to, 120, , , "Zoom""

Quickbuttons for Opera 9 have to be added by editing the Toolbar.ini file. The easiest way seems to be to drag a button that you don't need first to the postion where you want the Quick button, then edit the code to change that into a quick button. The Button numbers need to be in sequence. QuickButton11 means it is the eleventh button on my Main Toolbar.

The first action takes effect while the button is pressed, and the second action takes place when the button is released.

I think at this point we need to start an "Opera 9 buttons" thread. I'll unstick this thread in a little while, though we should probably link to it in the new thread ...

I haven't checked yet, does 9 still have that bug where you need to manually escape any "%" that appears in the link? Buttons which use %t or %c may need to be rewritten for 9 (as %25t and %25c, respectively), if that bug is still present.

Yes, we must keep a link to this thread as most buttons still work.

How about an updated title reflecting that this thread is an ongoing work in progress. As the few button that don't work are pointed out, they can be ... edited left

I would like all of you for helping us Opera newbies with excellent vuttons. I long ago gave up IE for Firefox, and while Firefox is a great browser, I am fastly falling in love with Opera. I have done a search thru the forums, and while I am certain the answer is already here and I have missed it, I would like to ask...is it possible to create buttons for individual widgets to place on the toolbar? I am an Opera button freak. Thanks in advance.

Widget buttons...

I have not done much with widgets, yet. So I really don't have a clue.

Have you checked in the Widget forum?

Thanks Saddle Magic for pointing me in the right direction.
It seems creating buttons for individual Widgets has already been added to the Opera wish list. Until then, I will live with the Widget drop down button. It is very functional for someone like me who hides their Menu bar.

Seeing as only a moderator can edit messages over about a day old, and I don't really see anyone in Norway likely to volunteer for that - and I wouldn't like to be stuck with that task either - I'm not too sure about that editing part. If you and Pesala would prefer to continue this thread, I'll change the title for you, but I won't guarantee any editing ...

If you can, please create one for me because I don't know how. I browsed this forum and didn't see anyone mention about it. I really need it since I need to block a lot of images, ads... Please help me!

Wrong thread, as Opera 8.x didn't have blocked content. Try the Opera 9 buttons thread, or start a new thread.

You mean something that'll do the same as right-click > Block content, or something else? Make sure you're specific wherever you post your reply.

Can someone make a button to activate spell check (not email spell check). I would like it to have a checkmark icon please. Or explain to me how to make it with this button maker http://nontroppo.org/tools/buttonmaker I tried but I couldn't get it to work. I think the "check spelling" command is for email only. Thank you

You really don't need to cross-post questions and this is the old button thread, for Opera 8.

There is a new button thread, For Opera 9, in a sticky post at the top of this forum.

It probably won't work with a web page. Buttons for editing commands only work on the Compose page because that page is set up for focus to automatically be on the message field, web pages are not.

Hi all:

I'm still using v8.51, and have stolen a number of good buttons from here:
http://operawiki.info/CustomButtons
and I'm very grateful to the Opera Community for that Wiki page.

I'm looking for a button to turn TOOLTIPS on and off without going into PREFERENCES.

I searched this thread for "tool tips" "tooltips" and "tool" and got no results. I even searched for "buttons" (which is used several times), but got no results. Apparently, the SEARCH THIS TOPIC feature isn't working at this time. So, if this question has been asked/answered earlier, I apologize for repeating the question -- but I DID try a search first before posting here.

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks.

Jerry

I did find this thread on that exact subject, http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=51925 the thread is a little dated.

Unfortunately the "search this topic" function is broken, so it's kind of hard to search these big threads.

Thanks for the link. I guess I'm stuck with PREFERENCES -> WINDOWS.

In Opera 9.x, you can do it. In Opera 8.x, you can't. Saddle Magic didn't find it, but I wrote a button for Opera 9 which does exactly as you want - but it uses a new feature in 9 called "Set Preference", and therefore doesn't work in prior versions.

you can set site-specific preferences via buttons/commands? I am looking for ones to control java, plugins and javascript on a per-site basis

No, actually, "Set preference" is the button equivalent to using opera:config. If you can change something - anything - in opera:config, then I can make a button do the same thing.

Hi guys!

I need help:

Can someone make a button to activate/deactivate "Accessibility Layout" mode?
In early versions of Opera this mode managed by [Shift+G] hotkeys, but now these hotkeys are deactivated.

Thanks

Which version of Opera? You posted in the thread for Opera 8.5x, are you still using that?

It is easier in Opera 8.x than it is in Opera 9.x, that's why I need to ask.

There's a command called "Select user CSS file", that's the same command as used in Opera 8.x, but in Opera 8.x it used to require a number as to the file to select. (The numbers for the stylesheets for Opera 8.x were defined in OperaDef6.ini, the default setup file in your Opera directory.) There should be a way to use it with Opera 9, but I'm not sure how - Opera 9 now generates the style menu "on the fly" so that custom CSS files are added as well.

You might try the number that was used in Opera 8. If they were smart, they'd have modified it to use either the title or the actual filename, but I don't know if they did.

You can of course make a button to display the menu, if you like.

Let me try a button and see what it does:

button

button

The one using the number seems to work, so try this:

button

The command (if you want to assign it to a key) is

Select user CSS file, 1 | Deselect user CSS file, 1

(Sorry, no idea what would make a good icon for that button. If you can think of one, let me know.

buttons "test1" and "Access" turn "High Contrast Black/White" on;
buttons "test2" and "test3" turn "Accessibility Layout" on :-)

thank you very much!

p.s. maybe a good icons for these buttons can be "eye" or "magnifier"?

Strange ... on my system test2 and test3 enable "Debug with outline". Difference between Linux and Windows, or just not consistent?

So ... would you prefer the View icon (the eye) or the Zoom icon (the magnifying glass)?

Is there a reason you are posting this in the old, Opera 8.5 button thread?

I am not sure what your button does or how to use it (beyond the obvious), I will note that the Menu bar does not support buttons.

The button say "New page & Paste and go", pretty obvious what it is supposed to do. Note that you'll have to use Copy to copy the text first, before clicking the button.
