Depends of what software you are looking for. Basically, the best site would be the manufacturer own website. For example, to download Malwarebytes' go to Malwarebytes' website. For Quicktime, go to Apple's Quicktime page. The same goes for Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Shockwave, etc.

The best place is the webmasters own website, for example - CNET (Downloads.com) now uses a wrapper for webmasters software products.

I wrote to "The-Register" about this here regarding my own software login app (http://www.chitchat.org.uk)

Brothersoft and CNET offer great collections to browse, however, in my opinion - always go for the vendors official website.

Best practice is to download software only from the manufacturer's page.
Otherwise one can easily end up with software bundled with crap.
