Jabber!

Since IM support has been requested several times, why not add a jabber client to Opera? Then, people could use whatever IM protocol they want, through transports. And since it's XML Opera would already be able to parse it. And, the conference/IM UI is already there because of IRC.
that's my two cents!

I'll put in another good word for Jabber in Opera. The only thing is that I would need something fairly feature rich if I were to use it.

I can vaguely understand the IRC client for the quick one-go check on a particular IRC channel, but also having instant messaging support seems a little far-fetched, to me. OTOH, I'm more of a 'specific app for specific thing' kind of guy (browser for 'net, mail program for mail, newsreade for news, irc program for irc, Gaim for instant messaging smile)

They actually had an instant messaging client years ago, in Opera 5 or 6. I think it used the ICQ protocol, but I'm not entirely sure of all the details (I never actually used it).

Exactly, that's why I would say I would like an IM client (Jabber ONLY, I wouldn't like the others), but it would have to be as good as the stand-alone clients, and I don't know that they can get that. I like the ability to work with my RSS feeds, Newsgroups, and mail all as one entity, but the problem I'm having is that Opera doesn't support enough features that I like to make me completely drop the other programs. (For example, binaries in newsgroups, photos in rss, and GPG + PGP-Mime in M2). It's the same thing with a Jabber client. I would want Psi like features: file transfer, transports, multiple simultaneous account connections, GPG integration, etc.

definitly a must have for opera, but with one request....that you can enable/disable jabber so you're not wasting availible memory when not using jabber at all. I like opera running quick and snappy.

definitly a +1 tho! opera peeps, please lets see this soon!

oh and a suggestion for the contacts window... just a suggestion but in my opinion it would be easier to handle contacts if the contacts window functions alot like the hotlist/panels window. but please make it detachable and/or capable of being attached to the opposite side of the hotlist/panel window so it can be visible regardless of what you are doing. i'm sure you will work it in flawlessly just like everything else, lol! great idea tho!

oh and one last thing.......please don't hold off until it is complete with all the features such as file transfers and whatnot to add it into opera. i'd personally like to see it in the next release of opera even if it is jsut capable of logging in/out and chating with no other features, thats good enough for me! for now anyways! then it can just progress from then on! that'd be great!

I can't. Jabber is not just for IM, it can do conferences. You can even IRC through jabber, via a transport. I'm going to stop myself now. I probably wouldn't use it because I'm addicted to miranda anyway. I still think jabber is a better idea than IRC though.
that's my two cents!

Many Jabber clients work with tabs nowadays - it would be really amazing if Jabber was supported in Opera with tabbed chats, libjingle, multiple jabber accounts, metacontacts and so on... I hope it'll be included in Opera 10 bigsmile

kahi - with tabs and panels I can really imagine that instant messaging (jabber) could bring many benefits. Email and irc client works well and even they are not best clients I've seen they have one great advantage - they are integrated. That's why I probably won't get back to Thunderbird smile

cenebris - I just think that development such "subprograms" as Jabber could have a negative influence on development of Opera's key features. I'm afraid of it :-).

mIRC has better functionality than Opera's integrated IRC but I`m still using cause it is easy, clean and what`s the most important - it`s integrated! Jabber should be integrated too...

IRC is included, I'd rather have Jabber next. After all, with panels and tabs and multiple windows(if you like chatting in another separate window) it can really help your efficiency if Jabber was integrated. I'd prefer MSN too, but I don't think that will be possible. Still, with Google Chat becoming more popular, Jabber support will be welcomed.

It's just logical. If we'll have Jabber in Opera we'll have any IM-system.

Well. Jabber is something between eMail and IRC. I think it is good enough reason to integrate it into Opera.

If you want IM-specific features, like games in WLM(MSN), you can install it. However, I don't use IMs extra features such as nudge in MSN, just typing and chatting. If Opera integrates it to next versions, then I will no more use other programs for internet.

Jabber is nice, but there's no need to wait. It's not as easy to setup as it could be, but it can be done. Downside is that you can't send files (at least not yet), but if text chat is all that you need, Bitlbee is enough. Instructions are bit hidden though, all I found was the third party documentation. But Bitlbee may be too much work for most.

Easier solution is just to use Operas IRC network. You don't have to visit any rooms/channels if you don't want to. Downside is that you need to get your friends there first, but after that there's not so much difference between using "real" IM client or Opera. Here's how to do it.

Instead of adding jabber client to Opera, you could work on porting Opera from Qt3 to Qt4. Or work on IRC client (i wish it could autodownload files throgh xdcc).
Or download manager. Or M2 (even if it's close to perfect ;) )
