Adobe Flash Player in Opera Mobile 11

We'd like to clarify a little how to use Opera Mobile 11 together with Adobe Flash Player plugin on Android.

First of all make sure that Flash Player from Android Market is installed on your device.
If you're reading it in Opera Mobile, you can go directly to Android Market.
You can find list of supported devices on Adobe website.
Adobe Flash Player requires Android 2.2 or higher and a device with ARMv7 processor.
Unfortunately the combination of Opera Mobile, Android 3.0 tablet and Flash Player 10.2 does not work at the moment.

To make sure that Opera loaded a plugin, type opera:plugins into address bar.
You should see something like:
Shockwave Flash
Description: Shockwave Flash 10.2 d156
/data/data/com.adobe.flashplayer/lib/libflashplayer.so
If this page is blank, something went wrong and a plugin on your device was not loaded properly.

On some devices (e.g. HTC Hero, HTC Wildfire) you can find a preinstalled version of Adobe Flash Lite 4 plugin.
At the moment it is not supported in Opera Mobile.

By default plugins in Opera Mobile are enabled on demand which means you have to click on a grey play button first.
To change this behavior open Settings -> Advanced -> Adobe Flash and
choose one of following options:
  • Enabled - all plugin content is downloaded and executed immediately after page is opened,
  • Click to play - default "plugins on demand" mode,
  • Disabled - no plugins at all.
You can see this setting only if Opera was able to load Adobe Flash Player plugin.

Let me describe one feature that may not be obvious - how focused plugins behave.
To bring focus to the plugin, tap once inside it - you'll see a short blink.
From now on all touch events will go to the plugin directly - for example panning, instead of scrolling the web page, can move something in a Flash game.
If you can attach external keyboard to your device, all key events will be passed directly to the focused plugin.
To go back to normal browsing, tap outside of plugin area or on navigation bar if the plugin occupies whole screen.

Flash doesn't work on my Transfomer Prime with Android 4.0.3(ICS).
In Opera:plugins it's listed as loaded, but all I get is a black bar in place of the Flash content.
In the stock ICS browser flash works fine.

I have tried several times to get opera mobile to play youtube. When I check the browser it shows that the plug in is there. (flash 11) but when I try to play a youtube video, I get the unknown or unsupported error. How can I fix this? This is the only browser I have this problem with and of course this is the one I want to use...go figure smile

Well, everything is working on my phone. But flash is not working as fluidly on opera mobile as it's working on dolphin and the stock browser. I notice lower framerate (it performs slower in other words).
The other thing is that it downloads the flash content even if it's set to 'play on demand' which makes the page load longer and more bandwidth is consumed. Again the stock browser is better cause it downloads the content only after clicking on it.
You could add that option too and then this would be the best browser for me. smile

Because DolphinHD isn't a browser, it's a skin on the default Android browser.
(like K-Meleon piggy-backs Mozillas rendering engine, and Maxthon piggybacks IE's rendering engine on a PC).

Oh i see~ Thanks very much.

This is so cool. I sort of started using the dolphin browser together with opera after I've noticed that there is not much difference in performance between the dolphin and the built in browser. They do make you believe that it's a though. And it's a shame that Flash doesn't work with Opera.

Doesn't metter. Both are same for me. sad Have to click grey button to play Flash contents. (also on 'Enabled'. Why?). I'm using Opera Mobile 12.0.2.
Maybe because of ARMv6 processor? I've a rooted device.

Do you use Opera Turbo? Turbo is used to save data, so plugins will not be downloaded automatically.

I can't determine any hierarchy/order/connectedness to these forum posts. So I'm not sure which post (if any) I'm replying to.

I'm trying to use Flash 11 on Samsung Galaxy 7" tablet (Gingerbread...2.3.4?) with Opera Mini 7.0.29xxx. (I downloaded Flash 11 from Android market.)

I typed "opera:plugins" in the address bar. I got:

You tried to access the address opera:plugins ,
which is currently unavailable. Please make sure
that the web address (URL) is correctly spelled
and punctuated, then try reloading the page.

Whaaa!? I looked at Opera help, but there was no content for loading plugins!

In Settings > Advanced there are 4 items (Exit button, network status, and 2 other items). Nothing about plugins. I suppose I needed to have installed/enabled/invoked/channeled Flash, but haven't.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Thanks. I read all info in Opera Mini ad in app store, but nothing about compatibility. Guess I should have read *all* the info on the Adobe site.

I started working in computer industry (HP) in 1978, and I'm still learning. We had a good percentage of our people dedicated to answering compatibility questions. I keep thinking that with all these high-level layers of software (Android,Java, HTML, etc) that compatibility was increasing -- not still something you have to look up in a matrix. Software should be smart enough to check (hardware, OS, browser, plugins, etc etc) and TELL YOU that it is/isn't compatible.

just a pipe dream, I know. sigh...

I chose Opera Mini mostly for size
(0.8 MB vs 14+ MB).
Guess I'll see if size matters w.r.t. speed.
Hope speed is more related to compression of data than to how much code is running!

One advice:

I strongly recommend to read not only info but also permissions of the app you want to download.
NEVER FORGOT TO DO THIS WHEN INSTALLING AN APP.

Flash will be gone soon!

Per October 2012 with introduction of Android 4.1 flash will no longer be supported by Android/Adobe.

Opera, please start transition to support html5 video codecs. All Android phones support h264. For example desktop youtube is working without flash in chrome, but not in opera mobile. Sometimes -without flash- embedded youtube movies are working sometimes it says this video cannot be played.

When searching on m.youtube.com first result is not properly displayed.

Opera, assume Flash will dissapear soon.

For example more and more sites use html5 video (h264) because of iPad. I do no longer use Flash.

I understand that HTML 5 is supported in mobile 12 as per you tube video, can the forum administrator answer the above request that videos/sports will work in the browser as Adobe will not be supporting Android 4.0.1 Jellybean. Where in the browser can we specify HTML 5 for videos as October is just around the corner and I have just upgraded to Android ICS on my Xperia S, by the way Flash works fine no problem watching sports or BBC iplayer on wifi.

Note that Youtube has their opt-in page ... if a site doesn't supply HTML5 it may not be possible for the browser to attempt to convert it.

Does Opera Mobile 12 support Flash? I do not see anything in the plugins. Galaxy Nexus, 4.1.1, Opera 12.0.4, Flash 11.1.115.12. The internal Android browser works fine.

@User siealex, hope to see ya back. Most Android browsers are a skin/wrapper around the internal browser.

Html 5 is the only thing now. I too find it difficult too wait for full supported support for html 5.

youtube works embedded in sites, several news sites serving html5 vid work too.

Adobe has NOT removed Flash Player from the Android market, it HAS removed anything android above 3.x as being able to download Adobe Flash Player from the Android Market (Playstore rather). You can still sideload the apk (copy to your device via computer and use a file manager to install).

HTML5 has been around in dev since 2009. w3c still hasn't hashed out the specifications fully and don't plan to until 2014. After that, it's another year until the browser community catches up, sends in complaints and flavor variations start appearing. (cause you know darn well Internet Explorer can't just let anything be).

I'm on an Android 4.1.2 platform as of today. Using Adobe 11.1xxxx and Opera Mobile 12. The libflashplayer.so is in /data/data/com.adobe.flashplayer/lib, yet Opera's opera:plugins doesn't recognize it. (Frankly I don't think it's even looking). I've had no issue getting flash to work in Dolphin (short of the app hack you do in the .xml file). Skyfire, ICS+ Browser, and the stock ICS Browser seem to have no issues either. I'm using http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about as my "official test".

Frankly, all these browsers need to STOP disabling the use of flash, by all means hide it until it fades out of existence for new installers, but leave the option to enable it.. Don't go limiting the users because Adobe says they won't support it (such as Dolphin) there is no order from on high from the Adobe Gods asking anyone to do this p I'll be poking around in the debug window for the next couple of weeks to see if I can't find a solve to this lack of Flash in Opera.

Ah! I should have looked further: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4675670

However both Opera Mini and Mobile downloads the file as .zip not .apk. sad

I'm not too desperate to watch online videos, anyway. I only wanted to update for security. I might just leave as is now, at least until my mobile browsing habit changes and Flash becomes more a necessity.

Thanks for the tip, Cindy smile

Sometime things get renamed. All you have to do is rename it back to .apk and then install it, however you sideload things.

Click on the button at the bottom right corner of the video window in the browser.

By the way, do you find that audio stops a few seconds from the end when watching videos within the browser, but the picture continues to the end? It happens for me the first time I play the video, but then once it has reached the end, I can rewind it to hear the audio that I missed.

Do you have any idea how to fix this?

Regards,
Jacko

If anyone is interested, I found the solution. I was initially viewing YouTube videos without being logged in to YouTube itself, which meant that no playback settings could be specified. This was causing the audio playback problem which I described in my previous post.

So, instead, I logged in to YouTube and set the option to not playback at the highest video quality. This allowed the audio to play all the way to the end, and the video quality was still quite good anyway.

Regards,
Jacko
